Censorship on television in the United States has been an issue ever since the television was invented. The public holds a variety of stances on the topic, and no matter what law is ever passed regarding censorship, it will never suit the needs of everyone. Some believe that censorship violates individual rights in the law, and others believe that censorship should be available through members in the family, not the government. On the other hand, some people strive to maintain government regulation of censorship. Television censorship is significant because it holds the future of our country. If channels continue to be censored, our rights will be violated. If not, then the future generations may change

Without appropriate censorship children would be flipping through the channels, hearing the “F- word” and watching nudity scenes. Within the radio community, there are only certain words that are not allowed to be said on regular radio talk, and in the music they play. Many people find offense to certain profanity and feel as though it is obscene. Children should be protected from the asinine people who feel it is appropriate to run their months. The Federal Communication Commission or FCC was created by the Communications Act of 1934. The Federal Communication Commission is responsible for regulating interstate and international communication through modes of communication like radio, television, and satellite. Although the Federal Communication Commission does have some negative consequences the positive implications that resulted because of the creation of the FCC outweigh them.

Once slavery had been abolished the tension between people who were white and people who were black never really seemed to vanish. But as I started to watch the news I never realized how much hatred and cruelty there was between people who are pale and others who have much darker skin. This problem continued to grow and with the borders of censorship weakened then I realized that this issue needs to be taken care of. Growing up in a city that does not have to deal with a large issue like this makes it difficult to have an opinion on the subject in the beginning. When I was first introduced to racism as a subject I never realized how much harm it caused people today but now that I have been enlightened racism is something that I am against.

In the early days, the radio industry was in chaos due to poor regulations and uncontrolled rapid growth. The Radio Act of 1912 was an unsuccessful attempt at regulation because it didn’t allow the government to deny radio broadcasting licenses [1]. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is an independent Federal regulatory agency authorized by Congress by the Communications Act of 1934 as the replacement to the Federal Radio Commission and is charged with regulating all non-Federal Government use of the radio spectrum including radio and television broadcasting and interstate telecommunications wire, satellite and cable as well as international communications that originate or terminate in the United States. The FCC took over wire communication regulation from the Interstate Commerce Commission in 1934 and congress had not changed the FCC’s regulatory authority until congress passed the Telecommunication Act of 1996.

In order to understand why Federal Communication Commission has legal authority to regulate media ownership and should be allowed to continue to regulate media ownership, you must first know the statues that gave way to the regulation. The FCC was created by the Communications Act of 1934. The Communications Act of 1934 replaced the Radio Act of 1927, and the FCC superseded the FRC (Federal Radio Commission). This act “called for the government to regulate in the public interest and foreign communications by radio and wire.” The FCC can be traced back to the Wireless Ship Act of 1910. The Wireless Ship Act of 1910 “required large ships to have wireless equipment and radio operators on board…made it illegal not to retransmit or answer wireless transmissions from ships.” This law was the first U.S. regulation on devices that used electromagnetic spectrum. The Chain Broadcasting Rules, was the first national ownership limit passed by the FCC in 1941. These rules regulated major national radio networks, in relation to local stations. “These regulations also included a structural ownership rule limiting a radio network from owning more than one broadcast station within a market area, reflecting the Commission’s earlier presumption that a single entity holding more than one broadcast license in the same community contravened the public interest.” This idea was upheld in the Supreme Court

The Federal Communications Committee (FCC) is the mastermind behind broadcast regulations. With television and radio becoming common assets in daily lives, the FCC rushed to gain authority over the public airways. The government and FCC believed that it was in their responsibility to make sure public communications were used in the public’s best interest, and that the communications were not used to harm the defenseless public. The quick expansion of communications led to the FCC’s rush to set the limits for what could and couldn’t be broadcasted.

The news media implicitly apply filters to their coverage of news stories to inform the public thereby creating a narrative skewed by political or financial gain to influence their viewers. Because the media is privatized, it is difficult to recognize this propaganda system. Careful dissection of the time and space dedicated to each story covered by the anchors between networks and newspapers highlights this discrepancy.

Through the Federal Communications Commission, all stations are to be licensed and maintain a file that documents what the station has done to operate in the public interest. In the 21st century the censoring of media should be scarce but in the contrary it’s being reinforce by countries. For instance, the act of censoring gay media hurts all those individuals who are members of the LGBT community and those who wish to learn more about the LGBT community and its history. It prevents people who wish to find more resources and information that might be able to change their life for the better. Censoring gay medial is okay when it promotes hatred and violence but it should not be censor when it promotes helpful information. It can also promote tolerance and acceptance for gay people and in the process it would be fighting hatred and

The parameters of the term censorship have been changed and manipulated very much over the years. Television and movie ratings have become more lenient against violence and indiscretion because these things are now seen as entertainment. Is this appropriate for our youth? Should children be exposed to these images so early on? How does censorship in the media affect adolescents? Children are the future of our society and need to have some understanding of real world occurrences. Ultimately, censorship can only be determined by the parents.
