The main issues of the Tang people, were gangs, opium, racism, and a corrupt neighborhood watch. An example, of one of these problems is when a brick is thrown into the company’s (family) house. This was when the White Demons (White Americans) were basically raiding the Tang people’s town/village. Many of them were drunk and outraged that the Tang people were taking jobs from them. Another example is when Black Dog (Uncle Bright Stars son) is almost shot by the corrupt neighborhood watch. He frankly didn't deserve to be saved. (He beats up Moon Shadow later in the book). These issues are common to all groups during the 1900’s, a lot of immigrants lived in fear of whites. In a lot of cases the name calling and nicknames was very specific …show more content…
Moon Shadow moved from China to North America, he would need to learn a new language, as well as adjust from his colorful lifestyle back home to a more moderate one here. For example, when he first steps on to the streets of San Francisco he calls the small houses prisons. In which the inhabitants don't know they are living in. Even though they seem to be just fine. However, when he gets to the Tang part of the city it stands out from the rest of the city, because it is more colorful. At first Moon Shadow lives in fear and doesn’t understand a lot of what is going on around him. Eventually he learns to speak english and he makes friends with Robin and her aunt both of which are white. This is when he finds acceptance in this new world he is in and later, after tragedy, realizes they are not that different after …show more content…
This happened when the Earthquake hit San Francisco. When Moon Shadow saw death and destruction before his very eyes. He had seen an entire family crushed by rubble. He responds by helping dig up survivors, as well as helping to rebuild their village. Before this however he witnessed his father kill somebody in self defense, and they had to go into hiding. This is how they met Miss.Whitlaw and Robin.
There weren't really any social changes throughout the book. The White Demons still disliked the Tang people in the end. There was only one true change and that's when Moon Shadow starts to think of Miss Whitlaw as a Tang woman who had been reincarnated as a demon because she was so nice to him. Moon Shadow responded to this by starting to trust Ms.Whitlaw.
There was no surprising information to me on the culture of China. Because I'm taking Chinese in middle school and we are learning a lot about the history of China in that class. But a piece of culture I liked was that the Tang people put statues on their porches to protect them from evil spirits. Another thing I like about the culture is the fact the dragons are considered good and not evil, unlike the western
The Chinese culture is built around thousands of years of tradition. Understanding these Chinese beliefs and social influences may benefit you when attending to someone of this culture.
The culture heavily changed in the role and power of women over the two dynasties. During the Tang dynasty women had a less restricted lifestyle. They had been able to have a large social life with greater freedom of the classical times. Even female deity were widely worshiped. But the Song dynasty after becoming Confucianism and a large growth in the economy a very heavy change into patriarchy took place. Women were very strictly restricted from social life and very subdue to remain” behind” there husband
“My own grandfather had been lynched about thirty years before by a mob of white demons almost the moment he had set foot on their shores.” This evidence shows that a mob of Americans lynched his grandfather, which makes MoonShadow fear Americans.”To tell the truth I knew as little about my father as I knew about the Land of the Golden Mountain(California).” He knew a little about his father, which explains why he wanted to go to California to learn more and see his father. MoonShadow faced many new challenges of being new to a new culture and a different
Sadly the planet was not in either of there hands and it ran rampant without order or logic. Creatures who formed on the planet were called Demons or Tagradorians, in their formal language. After hundreds of years, the planet had not made any progress in helping itself. Finally the hatred combusted and exploded! Moon and Sun were sadly caught in the cross fire! Giving Moon many burnt black wounds. Darker than any abyss they had ever seen. Moon collapsed from his normal orbit in pain. His entire left side was paralyzed. This new side of Moon was as we know, ‘the shadow of the moon’. Sun named him Stormy because the uncreative ‘the shadow of the moon’ was far too long. Stormy shared everything with Moon including Moon’s beautiful heart. Moon’s heart made Stormy unwillingly kind and friendly. However, sometimes the pure darkness of Stormy’s genetics strikes their heart like a storm covering the moon, making Stormy
Ancient China has a very complex background that has been formed over hundreds of years. Over the years China has had many rulers and they have all ruled in different ways. In Ancient China through all the years they had the same problem. Their problem was that the nomads to their north kept invading them and they couldn't stop them because the nomads had horses. China tried many different strategies to protect themselves: from paying tribute to the northerners, to building walls, or trading over thousands of miles to obtain methods of fighting back, none of these strategies had long term success.
In the story of Coyote steals the sun, Coyote wishes to go over the mountain range where no one dares to go. When he reaches the other side, he finds the village of light where it is so bright it nearly blinds him. He sneaks into the village and sees the chief pull the sun into a basket and pull the moon out from the other one. He was astonished and went back to his village to tell the chief. The chief wouldn’t believe Coyote and told him that the sun and moon were useless.
This essay is about the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and how An American woman's point of view is different from an 12 year old Chinese boy. The 1906 earthquake is about the destruction of the city and how it affected some people. But this essay is about what Emma Burke's point of view is and. What Moonshadow point of view is about the earthquake. Because they had different purposes for writing Emma Burke’s point of view of the 1906 earthquake was to inform, while Moon Shadow’s point of view was to entertain.
There are about 195 countries worldwide, yet if one were to be questioned about any one specific culture, they would not be able to answer. As already known, the United States is a country of immigrants. It could be described as “a ‘melting pot’ in which different cultures have contributed their own distinct ‘flavors’ to American culture” (Zimmermann, 2017). One of the most distinct cultures that have entered America would have to be the Chinese culture. China is a unique country in itself yet with so much to learn, it is safe to say that the average person would not know a small fraction of what makes up the Chinese culture. China, as every other country, is unique due to its tourism, customs, family life, and its government.
The story starts in Middle Kingdom in China when Moon Shadow starts to talks about how he has never met his father because he left to the Golden Mountain before he was born. He tells us about the stories that his mother and grandmother have told him about how poorly demons threat Tang people and how his grandfather was lynched just as he stepped on the land. Moon Shadow then gets a letter from his father, Windrider, asking Moon Shadow to come to America with his uncle, Hand Clap. Mother and Grandmother think it is a bad idea to go but he goes anyway. After the voyage over to America, Moon Shadow gets inspected by Uncle Bright Star and then goes to hug his father.
Social challenges the Chinese experienced ranged from how they were treated in their jobs to how they would marry. Along with the occurrence of the coolie trade, the workers are upset at the employers’ abuse and how they cannot regulate the laws within their job. When the Chinese came over, the Americans were discriminating against them and their manner. The way Americans described Chinese revolved about how China’s culture is not “normal” because it is being compared to their American culture and racialized comments. When you move into a new town or city, it is harder to get comfortable when the ones that already resides in area are judgmental and puts down the newer people. The Americans called the Chinese hurtful and unkind words like: “cowardly”, “submissive”, “silly grunts”, and “menaces”. Interracial marriages were shunned and disapproved by many, it created problems in racial and family order. An example of how a Chinese man with a White woman relationship was ruined when Elise Sigel was murdered and Leon Ling was called out for the murder because there was a rumor that they were in an affiliation with one another. From this incident and others, there were laws that were created to separate whites and Asian individuals from getting into any sort of relationship or contact.
The common people of China are anything but common, they just knew how to flourish in an era where the upper class usually lead the way, however, the Chinese during the Han, Tang, and Song Dynasties figured out how to outwit the upper class in a distinguished way.
Racism was a vital theme played throughout the novel. The character that faced the most racism would be Crooks. Crooks is the only black man living on the farm. Everyone on the
Chinese culture is truly one of the great civilization our world has come across. It boasts a vast geographic expanse, over 4000 years of written history, as well as a rich and profound traditional society. Many aspects of Chinese civilization can be traced back many centuries. It is so diverse and unique, yet harmoniously blended, and presents itself a priceless benefit to the world.
One experience so far in China that left a strong impression on my mind was a visit to the Shaanxi museum of history. Our tour guide was a locally educated young woman in her twenties. As she took us through the different periods of Chinese history, at every exhibit showing some sort of tool or mechanistic contraption she would turn and say “as you can see, the Chinese people are very smart!” She also recounted a story in which she was very offended that an American made a comment that Chinese people are short, to which she replied “yes, we are, but we have five thousand years of history and culture!” Both the richness and vastness of Chinese history was a huge source of pride for her, as her slightly illogical response to the American’s comment shows. In retrospect, her age denotes that she grew up on the government’s campaign in the 1990s to educated students about China’s greatness, to foster pride.
China is considered that of a third World County and their culture is deep in beliefs and customs with rules. In addition, China is located on the eastern Asia bordering Afghanistan, the major culture there is that of Han
