Taxes and the Deficit: We MUST Return to the Fundamentals of our Constitution

The American government has struggled with the issue of taxes and the budget for over a hundred years. Class conflict, adversarial political parties, and convoluted economic philosophies have resulted in a never-ending debate over taxation. The New York Times newspaper article, “Senate Panel Vote Backs Budget Plan”, from June 1993, discusses the current feelings of the time in regards to the budget and taxation. Moreover, the article mentions factors such as democrat-republican debate, trickle down economics, and high verse low taxes for the middle class. The issues discussed in this 1993 article differ only slightly from the taxation conversation of today. However, now in 2011, we face a budget crisis that threatens the American economy

The federal budget deficit it is an excess government spending on state revenues. And public debt is an aggregate amount of government debt, which is composed of outstanding loans and unpaid interest thereon. U.S. federal expenditures is approximately around 3.5-4 trillion dollars, which includes: defense – $700b, social security – $700b, Medicare and Medicaid – $450b, Interest – $200b, other assistance such as food stamps, unemployment, housing, EITC - $180b, and other non-defense - $600b.

The United States of America a country built on the idea of life, liberty and the purse of happiness. An idea so strong it lead to countless bloody battles to come true. This idea that was previously founded by the founding fathers are slowly fading. This country has been stuck in its ideology but have not done anything to make them come true. In oder to make an the ideas of the our fathers come true there must be a significant change in how the current systems. The current system in place is based on loaning money and giving unnecessary aid to other countries while letting itself suffer, however; if those were changed then United States of America might be able to progress forth.

In America, we enjoy freedoms that we often take for granted. We have the power to decide things for ourselves, such as our leaders, our rights, and our liberties. We have the ability to debate and evaluate the effectiveness and the relevance of a law or bill, and we must use this power when it comes to the methods of taxation. Currently, the US uses a progressive income tax as its means to raise revenue. Deborah Lee and Richard A. Grant, in “Counterpoint: Expanding Sales Taxes Helps the Rich, Hurts the Poor,” believe that a progressive income tax is the fairest and most constructive ways to fund the government, and that such a tax benefits the poor more than a sales tax.

Almost every American adults in the United States of America has to fill out a tax return to see if those still owe the government some money, or if those will get some back from the government. A recurring thought in the mind of many of these adults is,” How can my taxes be this high”. The middle class is supposed to be living comfortably and not have to live their lives worrying about money. But, in today’s United States the middle class has to worry about money every single day. The upper class is almost being penalized for earning too much money based on the percentages that they have to hand over to the government. The businesses that once were able to create jobs are now having to cut jobs because of the astronomical percentages

Over the past several decades, we as a people have allowed the fundamental principles written in our Constitution to be forgotten, distorted, or completely ignored. This did not happen overnight but rather bit-by-bit over time until we are faced with a system of government that is not, as the founders intended, based on Federalism and individual freedom, but rather a National system far removed from the principles for which

In 2015 the American Federal Government received 3.176 trillion dollars in taxes (‘whitehouse.gov’, 2015). In the same fiscal year, the American Federal Government spent 3.759 trillion dollars. Those trillions were collected by its Internal Revenue Service which is governed by Internal Revenue Code. The Internal Revenue Code is 74,608 pages long. For comparison the New American Edition of the Holy Bible is 1,900 pages. American taxpayers don’t want tax professionals; American taxpayers need tax professionals who specialize in navigating the current labyrinth that is the IRC. Americans are obligated to pay for the services the government provides. There’s an old saying about “a fool and his money”. Americans may be some the most charitable people in history, but they would be foolish not to protect themselves from overpaying taxes. It is virtuous to attempt to save the wealth one has generated in ones lifetime in order to secure prosperity for their families and posterity.

The U.S government is spend way too much money. One of the biggest problems the facing the U.S in the increase in the budget deficit. The increase in the budget will affect future generation. There are many solution to fixing the problem. On October 17 the United States debt was over $17 trillion dollars, which is more than the United States annual economic output. The only time the GDP was that high when we were in World War two.

Basically, what the federal budget deficit is a shortage of funds that are available for the government, where more money is being spent than what the government receives. But, national is where the government borrows money through various ways.

America is nation unlike any other; we truly are a melting pot of so many different cultures. America has grown far beyond what any of the founding fathers ever could have imagined. America can claim great pride in many accomplishments, but even with these accomplishments though, America is on the decline. When America was founded, it was thoughtfully planned out and set up in a way to ensure freedom. This was done so that they would not go back into the cycle of a controlling government, like the one the just separated from. Even with months of planning, many prayers and debates, their provisions have not all been able to withstand America’s growing government. Throughout history, America has been put to the test time and time again. We have endured a revolution, two world wars, a Great Depression, and we pulled ourselves back together after nearly being torn in half by a horrific civil war. But if there is one thing that we can learn from this, it is that progress can only be made through struggle. You should have a budget with less spending than tax revenue collected so then you can get a surplus and have extra money in case of a crisis. It is hard to cut spending because all the spending is mandatory for a safe and successful country. Deficit spending is good for making sure you have all the important things to run a country like a good military and good education. We will increase taxes on people that are making over $150,000 a year per household by 5%. We will increase taxes on people who are making over $1,000,000 a year per household by 10%. We won’t decrease taxes but it is a good thing when the country is going through a recession and people are struggling. We will advocate money to education and healthcare because educating people

Politics is the process in which negotiation and resistance is utilized to establish a stable society. In contrast, the current United States tax system fails to form such solid grounds. Without such a complex system, anarchy and chaos will overrule the goal of fairness that is favorable to people. Taxation is a branch of politics that is distorted in some ways in which it does not satisfy many people’s needs. Although a government is designed to run an organized society and meet the needs of citizens, it does not always do a great job. Many people feel that their place in the financial world grants them immunity from excessive taxes while others feel they are being hurt by such an unequal tax burden. The purpose of taxes is to benefit society as a whole and keep the government running, but it is not working properly and efficiently. People’s various situations make it difficult to implement the current tax system. Taxation has long been deliberated, and the issue holds many points, such as income, a person’s age, and where they live, these circumstances are unequal and unfair to many people.

As America continued to evolve and mature from its infancy, its very founding principle would evolve as well. “If the meaning of freedom has been a battleground throughout our history, so too has been the definition of those entitled to enjoy its blessings.
