Teacher-Student Interaction
Being able to determine what teachers expect from students and what students expect from teachers is the key to creating positive classrooms that work. Teacher-Student interaction is a two way street; The students relate to the teachers, and the teachers relate to the students. If teachers develop and build upon self-esteem and mutual respect within their classrooms, the teachers will achieve positive relationships with the students. Many years ago, power relationships and authority figures in our society were clearly defined. Dad ruled the household; moms and kids complied. There comes a time when the students want to share their ideas to their professors and their professors and their classmates. But the fear that holds the student back by not allowing him/her to speak up is the fear of refusal and humiliation. Many students fear that by voicing their personal opinions, the professor will not only turn their back on them but give the student a bad grade for not agreeing with the professor's views. In the case of the maverick student, the professor allowed the other students to embarrass the maverick student. "The class learned that bringing out such controversial views would carry a high social cost. They would be less likely to repeat the 'error' of their fellow student" (Chenney 113). Many students ideas and point of view are not respected by the professor and the students. In the case of the maverick student, the professor should not have allowed his classmates to embarrass him. There are ways that a professor and students can express their own views without having to attack someone else. Professors and student should respect the fact that not everyone will think like them, and that everyone views things differently. If the professor and the students show respect toward everyone's point of view, the class will be more responsive and will feel more comfortable asking and answering questions.

In, On the Repression of Free Expression, Mike Bloomberg argues that freedom of speech is needed on campuses. Bloomberg also believes it is not right to take away the privilege of learning from students, just because of other individual students. “we cannot others the right and privileges that we demand for ourselves” (Bloomberg.104). They cannot have campus wide trigger warnings over one individual student. Condensing what students could learn, is not helping their education. Professors should be allowed to teach and discuss the topics they have to without fear. “Ideas can be dangerous” (Bloomberg.105). More importantly, creating positive student-teacher relationships can prevent discipline issues from arising. By establishing a persistent tone of mutual respect, students will participate in class activities with confidence that they and their opinions are valued. Students also should be taught how to appreciate the unique contributions each student brings to the class, as well as how to effectively resolve issues that may arise. I believe that demonstrating genuine respect to students and showing interest in their concerns will allow the effective use of instructional time, positive relationships to prevail, and minimal discipline problems to avail.
Unfortunately, misbehavior overshadows positive and compliant behaviors. Teachers should realize that successful classroom management requires a teacher with an overt strategy to recognize, acknowledge, and reward the behaviors that he or she wants to flourish. We should understand that affirmation is the most positive behavior of all. Every student needs to feel that he or she will be accepted even when his/her behavior is not. Within the classroom it is important to set a rapport with the students by acting professionally and regulating our emotions in a way that will facilitate a positive classroom atmosphere. By setting classroom limits firmly, with respect and consistency, it allows us to accept the inevitable ambiguity and uncertainty that arises from allowing students to figure out the problem on their own. Through empathy and sensitivity towards the students, it will serve to strengthen teacher-student relationships, as well as the classroom climate and management (Pianta, La Paro, Payne, Cox, & Bradley, 2002 as cited in Jennings & Greenberg, 2009).
Another theory that clarifies my perspective is Canter’s Assertive Discipline. The focus of this theory is to show teachers how to establish a classroom climate in which needs are met by maintaining a calm, productive classroom environment. To achieve this goal the teacher must attend to students’ needs, establish understandable class rules for behavior, and establishing a climate of understanding and trust. I believe that when students and teachers respect one another the climate of the classroom is more pleasant than in classrooms where there is no respect from both the students and the teacher. The students would love to build a relationship with their teachers, however they feel victimized or ostracized due to their poor behavior in class. Students hate to be “called out” in front of their peers, even if they’re doing something wrong. Students also complained about the amount of classwork/homework assigned and excessive lectures by teachers.
The teacher I interviewed has taught for more than ten years at the same school. She started as a fourth grade teacher but she now works as an interventionist.
Establishing rapport with students is extremely important. Students should feel like a teacher genuinely cares about their well-being. Trust is an important component of the classroom learning environment. A student should respect and trust his or her teacher and the teacher should be respectful of his or her students and their families. This will encourage a nurturing learning environment and decrease behavioral problems in the classroom. When the teacher is consistently supporting the rules, and allowing the students to feel safe in the classroom, trust begins to develop. Teachers have to work to develop trust and respect in the classroom due to the fact that children in today’s world are often mistrusting because of society’s messages of the world being dangerous (world-view) as well as their own direct experiences (self-view) with abuse, violence, and neglect.
The first step in classroom management is to create an environment where students feel cared for and valued. To do accomplish this, teachers need to build positive student-teacher relationships. I consider and know that children are the future of our world; we have to know how to teach and educate them adequately so they could be prepared to lead future generations. I consider that each child has its own way of learning; there are multiple ways in which a person could be intelligent and capable of completing tasks. I want to be able to help children with everything they need. I want to motivate them to do and be the best in every task and area, everything that they dream and think about, to persuade their dreams and never give up no matter how hard they think it is or how difficult becomes trough the way. I don’t want to be the type of teacher that goes through the school year teaching what I have to and limit my capabilities to show them things and lessons useful for their lives, I want every child that goes to my classroom, leave it at the end of the year with instructions or lessons that make them better persons. Additionally, think that it’s important to have a good balance between discipline and kindness with students, it’s important to have a good relationship with the students because in that way is easier to communicate with them; if they have any problems or trouble learning a lesson or something in the content, if they have a good communication and relationship with you, it will be easier for them to tell you about what is causing them trouble.
