I am currently enrolled as a teacher candidate within Southeastern Louisiana University’s College of Education and Human Development under the Department of Teaching and Learning. The department is continuously giving its teacher candidates the opportunity to display all of the knowledge, skills, and dispositions needed to become a truly effective educator in the first through fifth grade classroom setting. The Teaching and Learning Department encourages its teacher candidates to strive for excellence and professionalism constantly. One way this is displayed is through the Conceptual Framework. In order to be an effective educator, the Conceptual Framework must be exhibited in the classroom. This includes demonstrating knowledge of the learner, implementing different strategies and methods that are accommodating to different learners and engage students continuously, displaying professional standards in the workplace at all times, and having sufficient content knowledge. A truly effective educator takes into account the knowledge of the learners in her classroom and modifies her lessons accordingly, using different strategies and methods to reach as many of her students as possible. Her lessons will appeal to a variety of learning styles and learning needs by using Bloom’s Levels of Taxonomy along with Gardner’s Multiple intelligences. Over the years, I feel I have been guided by God to pursue Elementary Education, which narrows my focus to the kindergarten classroom. I will clearly define the most helpful theories that may be implemented throughout the kindergarten learning environment. Effective teacher characteristics will be identified and why they are imperative for this particular age group. Young children have different learning characteristics and it is important for teachers to recognize and accommodate to the needs of their students. Throughout this course, I have discovered certain characteristics about myself and I will elaborate on my unique learning styles.
The framework is composed of 4 domains and 22 components. Each component has a level of performance; unsatisfactory, basic, proficient and distinguished. The lowest score is unsatisfactory and the highest level is distinguished. The framework makes it easy for teachers to be evaluated and understand their score because it describes the performance for each component and provides possible examples for the levels of performance in all of the components. The examples show how a particular skill of teaching might look like in the classroom.
Facilitating a foundation in academic or philosophical pedagogy can help form a path for the educator, a path to better understanding teaching, education, learning and learners. Often, most of the programs designed for learners and the curriculum is often derived from theories. Understanding theories can help guide a teacher through their education journey. Sometimes, teachers may struggle with classroom organisation or implementing the curriculum in a considerate, all-encompassing and engaging way, especially if you are a CRT or Graduate Teacher - and often these concepts can help inspire and encourage teachers. To be an empowered teacher means your classroom and students will be empowered learners, and that is the best type of learning. There are many theories that have contributed to education as a body and has many of these theories help educational departments plan curriculums to benefit not only teachers but also all students. Although an outstanding educator exudes many other characteristics, these three qualities are essential for one to be considered an outstanding, high-quality teacher.
I believe there are many skills and attributes that are necessary to an outstanding teacher; one’s ability to keep students engaged, the desire to see all students achieve, and knowledge of the content taught are attributes of an outstanding educator.
What is an effective teacher? Is it a teacher who is caring, compassionate, warming, and personable? Or is it a teacher who is good at planning, works well with other teachers/administrators, and self-disciplined? Many people would say that these qualities and characteristics would make an ideal teacher, and they would be correct. But these qualities alone are not enough to be considered an effective teacher.
The Framework for Teaching by Charlotte Danielson has been developed through research as a guideline for current and future teacher’s professional responsibilities in and out of the classroom. Districts throughout the country are using this framework to assess and guide their teachers to build successful methods of planning and preparations, setting up the classroom environment, instruction and professional responsibilities. Each of these domains builds off of each other to form a successful learning environment. The effective teacher exhibits positive expectations for all students. Having positive expectations simply means that the teacher believes in the student and that the student can learn. Another point that makes a good teacher would be his/her patience. Teachers should not get upset or even worse, give up on the students who are not so strong in their studies. I believe that teaching excellence comes from two different things, dedication and the desire to help others. Teachers who are dedicated to their students and classrooms are definitely going to be excellent and never give up at what they do. Teachers who have a great desire to help their students and their career will continue to do everything they can to make sure their students receive what is needed.
