I love working with kids, I have my Elementary Teaching Certification for grades K-6 from Ramapo College of New Jersey. Similarly, from July to August 2014 I worked as a Teachers Aide at Ramapo Explorers: STEM CAMP, providing a positive and supportive classroom management system for middle school students. From March 2014 to August 2014 I worked at Golden Steps Learning Center where I was a Teachers Assistant. My responsibilities included: composing a lesson plan and assisting the teacher on their lesson. Then from June to August 2015 I was a Teachers Assistant at the Goddard School. I experienced solo class time and improvised in order to keep class running smoothly and stay on a tight schedule. Then from September-December 2015 I student
In recalling my favorite teacher, I have questioned many times what it is that I remember about this person the most. In my case, it was that this teacher showed a genuine interest, in my work, in my interests and in my being. As Danielson (2007:28), illustrates, it is only when students remember their teacher’s years later, that ‘students find themselves recalling the warmth and care their favorite teachers demonstrated, their high expectations for achievement, and their commitment to students’. Arguably, the exclusive teacher-student relationship is constructed on the central human need of knowing another person cares, which lay at the heart of student’s development and learning. (QUOTE). While I did not recognize the significance of building relationships with students until, almost two years into my role as a voluntary teaching assistant. I now consider the most essential role that educational practitioners can ensure, is to develop relationships with their students. My understanding is confirmed by Noddings (2005:17) who states ‘caring is a way of being in relation’. Suggesting that perhaps it is not what you teach these students, but rather, whether or not you let them know you care.

“Are you the only one?”. At the beginning of my academic career I was completely lost as to what my dad was referring to, so of course I asked, “The only what?” He replied, “The only black person in your class.” Over the next 13 years, I would answer either “yes” or “no, there are 1-3 others.” This annual question alone implied that I was different from everyone else. As an observant person, it was obvious to me that my appearance made me physically different from my peers in my majority white Eastern Tennessean surroundings. My three most obvious descriptors are I have natural afro-textured hair, I am an African American, and I am a woman. Besides being physically different, I wondered if there were any other factors that made me different. To find out whether or not I was “different,” I decided to engage in communities that were considered “different”. At the beginning my journey the engagement was
