Amit Joshi Research Scholar Teaching Language through 4F Approach Following more than sixty years of independence, the status of English language in rural India, predominantly in Rajasthan, is poor. Even after a decade’s learning in school, students are not able to bring into play English aptly to meet up their requirements. Various reasons can be accommodated for this apologetic state however my concern stretches out with the discovery of best possible way out which serves as a step forward for its eradication. Since we are living in a fast globalizing multicultural era, where English has emerged as a dominant language, it’s time to minimize the distance existing between English and an individual to meet the diverse demands of …show more content…
‘4F’ approach interests me as it focuses on a very familiar and shared experience, making it suitable to be implemented in the classroom teaching. My classroom is in a way represents diversity of familial backgrounds. For the sake of experiment with language teaching, through the inspiration of ‘4F’ approach, the class is categorized in three groups A, B, & C on the basis of their lingual familial backgrounds. The first group ‘A’ which constitute almost 10% of the class, consist of the students who are right from their birth are in Anglo-Indian homes, and English is their natural medium for communication. 40 % of the class constitutes the second group B, where the students are bringing up from their very childhood, in educated Christian, Muslim and Hindu homes their chosen medium for communication is English as their elders know that given today’s environment for future growth and prospects, their children will have a definite edge over others. However, the third group C, of students who’s interaction with English is minimal, neither they speak nor they get chance to hear English consists almost 50 %. In the case of group A, learning English is through the natural engagement process of uninterrupted bombardment of sounds, words, sentences to comprehend and convey content with the help of family, friends,
In this research, I’m going to focusing on the English as a language is being taught in many countries oversea today including Thailand. In fact, you’ll be surprising to know that English is required for many of the students in many countries. Unfortunately, it is not necessarily taught as well as it could be because of heavy teaching load, class sizes and adequate technology. Learning an English today still's has been challenging for many countries and specifically in Thailand. In Thailand, the student often gets too overwhelmed with English and mentally tune out in the classroom because English was their least favorite subjects. On the other hand, the students don’t have a resource at school or they don’t have it enough. Furthermore, many students just go to English class and switch back to Thai as soon as they out of school. English isn't used locally in Thailand. Although, there still a lot students continue care about English language because English has been the most ordinarily utilized language internationally and the language of traffic control and the majority of academic journals. It’s the most common language on the internet and the language that travelers use to communicate with different native speakers.

Because of this, it makes lots of people rely on the school, they just know that if they can pass the test in the school, their English is good. It is wrong. And as the English developed, many materials are in English, as people who want to know what the result is, they need to know
In their opinion in countries that English is not their native language it has negative impact on culture and mother tongue. However, there are many reasons that demonstrated that use of English as a medium of instruction have positive impact on everyone’s life. As a study clearly says that student has the ability and skills to learn many languages (Begg, 2012). He adds that teaching a language in schools as a first or second language qualitatively vary because if all higher-study materials are in English so students to needs to be proficient in that language and that transition is smooth from school to college or college to university. In addition he clearly mentioned that” Junking English as a medium of education will only push us back”. For instance, there are many people he studied in English that now became successful in their life, Indira Gandhi, Jyoti Basu, Ratan Tata, Sunil Gavaskar, Amitabh Bachchan and a million of people who are leaders and successful (Begg, 2012). Therefore, all of these researches widely declare that English as a medium of instruction has benefits to improve educational system of and to develop a country that English is not their native

English is a widely accepted language in the scenario of today. It has become ‘global language’ and we can say has often been referred to as, the lingua franca of the modern era. English as a second language is currently most often taught around the world. In India, the purpose of English is not only for to make communication with the outside world, but also for within inter-state. There is the great ethnic and linguistic diversity. Because of the great diversity within our nation, English as a language played a significant role as an indispensable ‘link’ language. With the tremendous revolution in the Information Technology sector, various software and operating systems have been developed in the English language and English has become a great medium for written and oral communication. Due to communicative and educative value which English as a language has achieved and established itself as the world’s most important language. The world has recognized its
In the contemporary world, English language has a comprehensive usage and regarded as a lingua franca that acts as a communication bridge between the speakers who speak different native languages . However, it is quiet challenging to teach this language effectively especially to those who speak English as a second or foreign language.
Need of the learning English language has been raised as per the requirement of the time to compete with the world as being the part of globalization. Pakistan is among the developing countries, in order to compete with the world there is need to learn English language. As Shamim (2011) observed, “English is the passport to success and upwards social mobility” The education policy of 2009 has directed that English should be taught as compulsory subject from Grade-I.
Perhaps the most dramatic the development that has taken place in the field of English language teaching in the last 50 years has been the shift in its primary function.. from being mainly the native language of nations such as the UK or USA, to being mainly a global means of communication. The speakers of English whose L1 is another language already vastly out number native English speakers, and their number countries to grow. For most of its learners, English is therefore no longer a foreign language. This development has brought with it a number of changes in the principles and practice of English language teaching.
Language has been in the world since humans began to exist on the Earth. Language is an important part in constructing people’s perception and cultures. It is the reason that aggressors tried to teach their language to the victims who were invaded. People in the world, nowadays, interact with foreign people who speak different languages, so the possibility that people meet foreign people is increasing. As time goes, the society where people live requires them to learn a second or third languages. Some people think that they do not feel like they need to learn a foreign language, such as America and China. They claim that people can use the time better instead of learning a second language. In fact, this is the truth that we can survive even if we don’t know other languages. However, since the trend of our world has been changing, people make an effort to learn a foreign language for different purposes. Becoming a bilingual person(or multilingual person) gives an opportunity for people to gain more and better skills and abilities than other people who do not learn a second language. For these reasons, many researchers study and search benefits and necessity of learning a foreign language. Thus, many schools in the world have formally started a class which is learning a second language because of getting the positive things even though we are able to live in our world without knowing another country’s language. We will have a lot of advantages if we know how to speak and
It was during the 1800s that a decision was taken which had ended up being the turning point for the language in education scenario in India and changed the orientation of language priority in Indian education. The decision was taken to ignore the vernacular medium education and concentrate entirely on English as the single language for instruction (Paranjpe & Prasad, 2010)(Sridhar, 1989). It was made clear that those who had attained education in English would be preferred over the vernacular educated class. English had become the language of higher education and with the establishment of the prestigious universities in the major cities like Bombay, Calcutta, Madras, Lahore, Allahabad and Punjab, English had achieved its supremacy (Sridhar, 1989) (Krishnaswamy & Krishnaswamy, 2006). From this point onwards education came to be equated with English education and those who studied in vernacular medium were put permanently in the background (Sridhar, 1989), a mindset prevalent in the mind of Indians even today. Despite the changes which were made in the language policies in the 1900s to make space for vernacular languages in the educational setting did not meet with the expected success (Krishnaswamy & Krishnaswamy, 2006) (Sridhar, 1989). By 1970s and 1980s about one-third of the India had its schools using English as their medium of instruction (Paranjpe & Prasad, 2010). Hence the language in education policy during the colonial era had created two different media of
English is a language which can be traced back to the 5th century by migration and resettlement of its speakers into the different parts of the world. Beginning its foundation of the American colonies into Europe and into the 17th century with its establishment of the East India Company (Paranjpe & Prasad, 2010). The 200 years of presence that English had in India left a huge impression on its language orientation. Both attitudinally and linguistically English has made its place into the new cultural environment and fresh communicative needs. Despite the government’s support towards Hindi, the language inculcating the largest number of speakers under it compared to the other Indian Languages has not yet been able to take up the prestige that English holds in India. India’s larger population is bilingual with proficiency in English. Today it has earned the privilege as the language of the world’s developed countries, their technologies and economy (Paranjpe & Prasad, 2010). It is the very reason that this language has caught the attention of the future generations irrespective of their home country to put English at the pedestal and give development of their native tongue a second place. The provision that English gives on the professional front is too strong as compared to any of the other languages in India. It has not only acquired a wide range of functions in the Indian society, but has also linguistically evolved its own characteristic features at the
The place and importance of English is the whole educational system of India has been a subject of much heated debate and the heat has not yet subsided. It is alive and burning problem gripping the minds of all people, high and low, and it has been discussed threadbare, upside down and inside out, in parliament, public forums and the press. And yet we are no nearer a solution. Public opinion in different states and different language groups is pulling in different directions ‘each varying from the other all variants from the truth of realities.’ We have not achieved a consensus and enlightened opinion and hence solution has not yet crystallized.
One of them is large sized classes, in which educators prefer to develop some receptive skills, which are easy for them to put in practice and assess. Consequently, another problem deals with the fact that some students feel too embarrassed to performed in another language in front of their class. Nevertheless, the problem of differences in teaching in different cultural settings make everything more challenging. In western countries, the communicative approach is normal as students start school; however, in the other countries communicative approach decrease the value of their customs, so they choose the old teaching methods, where students are in silence and the teacher is the one with the right to

There is a saying from Ludwig Wittgenstein, “The limits of my language are the limits of my world”. This saying is absolutely true. Language is the most the most important part of life.
