He beautifully portrays the success of teamwork. Starbucks Corporation is the most famous chain of retail coffee shops in the world. In 1971 it started with three owners and in 1982 a sales representative, Howard Schultz, of the house ware business in New York joined them. When he had a vocation to Italy, he experienced an entirely different coffee culture. He wanted to adopt that in Starbucks but the initial owners rejected the idea. Therefore, he chose to establish a new coffee shop, named II Gironale. In two years his business was so successful that the three owners of Starbucks decided to sell their business to Schultz. His work strategy worked so well that in 2007 he was ranked as the 16th best company. Schultz was so successful due to his business culture, beliefs and attitudes. He believed that “the tip of success is not coffee but employees.” Hence, motivation is the vital factor for business in the process of making their production. As “labours are not working machines, so they can not always do the same affairs with equal passion.” Accordingly the efficient method to make staffs keen on their jobs should be to motivate them. First, many business organizational structures arrange departments either in cross specialty teams or task oriented teams based on operational design and expected outcomes. These teams are designed with members who are assigned roles that increase overall team productivity. The team members bring talents, knowledge and a skill set that uniquely contributes to collective intelligence and resourcefulness. This type of teams can be seen at their headquarters, with different teams such as the marketing and the operations departments, and at their retail stores with different teams such as the bakery, deli, and grocery departments2. In addition, this also helps explain why Market Basket uses the multiteam system, as each of these teams have very distinct functions, but they all need to be coordinated for the ultimate satisfaction of the customers. This paper will explore some ways to effectively create and manage a team. There are many differing styles, so I will try and focus on the ones that I would chose personally; and match my style. With my style being eclectic, this is a pretty broad statement. I like to take, what I feel are the best ideas, and transform them into my own. I like to think that if given a team, I would be a great manager; being able to bring out the best is my workers. No matter what style you take on, you have to be ready to adapt at a moments notice. Corporate culture is a key component to the success of Starbucks. When looking at the seven dimensions of corporate culture (fn textbook pg 338) Starbucks emphasizes Team and People Orientation along with Innovation and Risk-Taking and pose less emphasis on a competitive environment or an outcome oriented approach.
