Although the development and implementation of tech prep education programs have been in process since the initiation of the Carl D. Perkins Act Amendments of 1990, misconceptions about tech prep education still exist. Although the integration of academic and vocational education offers one strategy for developing the academic and technical competence of students, it does not constitute tech prep. Tech prep requires not only new courses and a sequenced core curriculum, but courses that take into account the learning styles of the majority of students, incorporating concepts like that of contextual learning. According to Hull (1993), contextual learning "occurs only when students process new information or knowledge in such a way that it makes sense to them in their frame of reference (their own inner world of memory, experience, and response)" (p. 41). Thus, the applied academics approach to learning, which involves the teaching of solid academic content by means of hands-on and vocational applications, follows the contextual learning concept in that it provides for learning in the context of life experiences-building on what the students already know and applying learning in the context of how the knowledge/information can be used in the context of exploration, discovery, and invention (ibid.). One of the goals of applied academic curriculum is that it should enable students to transfer knowledge from academic content to vocational applications and from school to the workplace.

Tech Prep is a program which assists states in providing and operating career and technical education programs, as well as assistance to students so they can earn their associate's degree or a two year certificate. The Act also requires this program to have seven specific elements to insure it's success. Another goal of Tech Prep is to strengthen links between secondary and postsecondary schools to encourage students to further their education after high school.
For this paper, I interviewed my father, a 65 year old former mechanical engineer who lived in France until the 1980s, about the way that technology has changed over his lifetime and how it has affected him. He is currently working as a freelance programmer and has had past experience programming since the days of punch cards. Because of both his geographical and career background, he had some very interesting observations about the change of technology over the past decades.
Technology is the core component of daily life, it helps with every task and supports the world with improvement. More careers are expecting individuals to know at least the basics of technology and how to use technology efficiently. Schools, companies, communities and much more are affected positively once technology is incorporated within their systems. Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) is important in the field of instructional technology because it is paramount to ensure that teachers know how to use the technology that they are supposed to integrate into there classrooms. I also can say, that TPACK is extremely helpful in the corporate world as well. If I am expected to use the technology in the office and explain how to use it, I better be sure I know how the technology is being used. In the corporate setting, much like the classroom, if you don’t know how to use the technology you are integrating into office use, you will not only be frustrated but, those you are teaching
I began my educational career in March, 2014 and have thoroughly enjoyed every class I have taken. In my first quarter at ITT, Knoxville campus, I began classes three weeks late; yet with all of the encouragement from the Director, Dean, faculty and administrative staff, I not only overcame all obstacles and bypassed all other students in my program. In September 2015 I was honored with becoming the Valedictorian. I have become the Student Ambassador’s president, first advisor to the National Technical Honor Society, a member of the IT club, and Alpha Beta Kappa Honor Society.
One of my main goals this year is to land a top-notch internship with a technology company. I have been trying to read as much as possible on the best ways to accomplish this. There are many books and articles that have helped me, offering advice on interviews and what sort of skills I need to develop to obtain one of these internships. An article that I read “How to land a top-notch tech internship — and a tech job — while you’re still in school” by Michael Deng, gave some great input and I think it impacted my sense of professional identity and pertains to my goals that I have set this year.
