Over the years, technology has created new forms of communication, such as text messaging, emailing, blogging, or using social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Skype, and many more. People commonly use these modes of communication rather than the traditional pen and paper or face-to-face conversations because it is easier and convenient for them to communicate with everyone, including family members and friends living on the mainland or in a different country. I should know because my family has been using Facebook and Skype for several years now to communicate with our extended family back home in the Philippines who we have not seen since our last trip there in 1999. Technology has helped connect people and created friendships that without technology couldn’t happen. A big way for people to connect with each other is by using social media like Facebook, Snapchat, and Instagram. Facebook connects more of us to more of our friends and family than we have ever been connected before (Document 2). Every "Like, every Share, every comment is a way for us to renew on a tiny scale our connections with our friends (Document 2). Our phones are devices that can connect us to anyone around the world in the matter of seconds (Document 5). Technology is not only connecting us with other people it is also connecting us to more information.

In Fahrenheit 451 Clarisse explains,"I don't think it's social to get a bunch of people together and then not let them talk, do you?" (27) What I think the author is trying to communicate with this quote is how different they interpret the meaning of social in the book rather than how social means communicating and talking to others. Technology has had a major impact on our lives, especially in the last few years. Being able to adapt to new things has definitely been a main part of these few years. There has been new technology coming into the classrooms to help teach the students. We are now beginning to rely on the advancements in technology in order to help teach our students. Smart boards are being used in teaching; ipads are another major technology being used in classrooms to teach students. We are always developing new and improved technology in order to thrive in our environment. Even our smartphones are always being improved to help better our lives, but the question is, how far should we go? Picture a family in a living room silent. All you can see is the light of their tablets and phones lighting up their faces. Technology is everywhere we go. You can not walk down a street, take a plane, or go to a coffee shop without seeing someone staring at a screen. Technology can hurt us in physical and social ways.

Many foreigners who moved to the United States of America use technology to communicate with relatives back home through video chats. People who travel to different countries and does not speak the native language can use their smartphone to translate for them. In today’s society Americans are allured into this world of technology. On a daily basis, updates, statuses, and pictures are all buzzing throughout social media sites and networks across the globe. One who doesn’t come into contact with technology daily, may feel lost, or even confused. We are at a point in time known as the “Internet Age.” According to a recent study there are around six hundred and fifty million websites, and over two billion people using the Internet worldwide. Often our lives revolve around technology, us Americans thrive on it. In essence, it makes us feel as if we’re part of something more. In Attention Deficit: The Brain Syndrome of Our Era, Richard Restak explains “Our brain literally changes its organization and functioning to accommodate the abundance of stimulation forced on it by the modern world.” (332) In other words our brain can reprogram itself in order to process the different technologies that it comes into contact with. When discussing how technology is affecting ones brain, certain aspects that must be focused on are the affected attention span, the need to multitask, and the distractions resulting in one’s divided focus. As great as technology is for helping with every day functioning it should be used as a tool, and not a toy. Technology is known to be responsible for many long terms negative effects on individuals ability to communicate and function in society.

There are many ways to use technology. Texting, calling, internet, and social media are some examples. Social media sites like Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and Tumblr allow us to share our lives with our friends and family. Since I’m in college now and I am three hours away from my family and my friends go to different colleges, I use Facebook and Instagram to keep in touch with them. They get to see that I am doing okay and adjusting well to college life. I believe that with using social media sites it can provide our families with some reassurance that we are doing okay and are happy. My Aunt lives in Kentucky and one of my Grandmother’s lives in Iowa.

Speaking of becoming more connected, wanting to connect with others can facilitate conversation among people. Computers, the Internet, Gadgets all these things have transformed our working system completely and our productivity has increased unbelievably.
