Technology In A Dystopian Society

We rely on technology for everything in our lives today. It is hard for us to be more than ten steps away from our phone. Dependence on technology is even evident in Fahrenheit 451. In the novel, the TV is everything to some people. It becomes their friend their family and even their life. They even have technology that butters their toast and medical procedures. We use technology everyday whether it is our phone, laptop, or ipod. We use them every single day all day long. If something was not to work for a single day our society would crash with the absence of technology.

The next generation of the United States is in huge trouble. Slowly in front of our eyes America is becoming a dystopian society. Although, the United States was created to be close to perfect, as years go by we can see the dangerous reality of how far the US is from being perfect. Our society is going through a tough time right now and while it may not seem that our country is in trouble we will soon realize. So how does our modern society relates to a dystopian society? A dystopian society is an imagined place or state in which everything is unpleasant or bad, typically a totalitarian or environmentally degraded one. Dystopia is also a term that that defines a corrupt government that projects a false image. This relates to the modern American society because it relates to how citizens are treated by the government. Our government enjoys throwing false images to the citizens of the country. The government also enjoys hiding things from the citizens to make everything seem better than it actually is in reality. Characteristics that a dystopian society lack are freedom, self-control, and individualism. Although, it is hard to accept the fact that our country is headed towards a downfall, we have to realize that our society is becoming a dystopian society.

Do you think that living in a technical world would destroy society? Well, in Bradbury's novel, Fahrenheit 451, technology is very advanced and seems to get people's attention. "You're not important. You're not anything" (Bradbury 163). Fahrenheit 451 is explained as a dystopian literature. Such literature portrays an imaginary world where misguided attempts to create a utopia, or a socially and politically perfect place, results in “large scale human misery." (Critique by Michael M. Levy) This quote makes you realize that technology is taking over humans and the world has to do something about it. By creating an “utopia”, Fahrenheit 451 requires the government to take away citizen’s rights and freedoms to create the perfect society.

We are all victims. We are all victims of being captured into the world of technology. A dysfunctional lifestyle comes to mind when we think of a world without technology. Think about how many opportunities we missed, friends we never met, and lessons we didn’t learn all because we were too busy looking at a screen. The increasing lack of human interactions in Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury demonstrates how the rapid abuse of technology will lead to the demise of tradition and a world with little emotion.

People who use social networking sites for their daily communication are hooked to a point that they neglect health responsibilities, especially their diet. Another downside to social media is that the user could share too much information which may pose threats to them. Users can help protect themselves by not sharing personal information with others they do not know and by having their social networking profiles on a private setting.
