Tecumseh Tecumseh was a Native American and leader of the large Indian tribe called the Shawnee. When he was a young kid the people in his tribe could tell he would have a promising future. Tecumseh was very athletic, wasn’t a trouble maker, and had a great character about him. His father was killed by white men and left Tecumseh mom as a wisdom with Tecumseh and his younger brother. Having his father die at a young age, that focused Tecumseh to immature faster and become the man of the family. His younger brother Lalawethika (noisemaker) lived in his older brother’s shadows, so he got into a lot of trouble. This brought Indian tribe from though out the Midwest to the Ohio. Tecumseh traveled thought the Midwest talking to the other tribe, saying they have to join together to fight the “white men” because this is their holy land. Tecumseh joined forces with the British at least he thought we did, until one battle they wouldn’t let them in the gates and when the British knew they were t going to win the war they bailed on the Shawnee’s tribe. Tecumseh was a great leader and everyone that came into contact with him respected him even the British, other Indian chiefs, and Americans. When we talked about Tecumseh in class we didn’t go in depth about his little brother Lalawethika. All that was said about him was that he was a trouble maker when he was younger. I really liked how the movie went in depth about Lalawethika and how he grew up to be known as the prophet of the Shawnee tribe. Then we learned about how great of a leader Tecumseh but we didn’t go over how he met with William Henry Harrison. How when Tecumseh and William Henry Harrison, Tecumseh gave off this vibe where it made William Henry Harrison respect him, even if he couldn’t understand
Cherokee Indians have been around for many years, but when the topic of Native Americans is discussed it is only about the struggles and hardships they went through but never their actual culture of how and where they originated or how they came to be. There are many interesting things to learn about Cherokee Indians such as their heritage, religion, language, and their traditional songs, dances, and food.
The Wichita is a tribe that belongs to a small tribe about three hundred and twenty who live in Oklahoma. They are a tribe of Native Americans who were discovered by the Coronado expedition. Like other Native American tribes the Wichita people have their own language, culture and both, social and legal customs. They refer to themselves as Kitikitish which can be taken literally to mean raccoon eyelids. But signifies a tattooed eyelid which is from a former custom among men where they tattooed lines upon their eyelids. Women however tattoo lines upon the chin and among older women there are those with tattooed designs all over their breasts. The Wichita people were primarily sedentary interested in hunting and farming. The men hunted and went for wars for the protection of their families while women farmed and raised children.
Native Americans were discriminated against and forced out of their own lands because the Americans felt inferior towards them. In 1812 the British found themselves at war with the Americans and this was the Native peoples chance to once and for all defeat their white superiors. Tecumseh was a Shawnee chief but he was addressing Choctaws and Chickasaws because he is calling for Native American unity throughout the entire United States. He announces his alliance with the British who are fighting against the Americans in 1812. He urges other Native American tribes to do the same because they have a common enemy. Also, it will be harder to fight the Americans if they are a unified force instead of individual tribes all fighting the common enemy
The Sioux and Chippewa Indian tribes’ have a drastically different way of living compared to what other people are accustomed to in terms of their history, clothing, tools, and weapons needed for survival. The Sioux Indians were originally from Asia, but migrated to America about 30,000 years ago. Their long, straight jet-black hair resembles that of the Asian descendants. The Sioux tribes were located in The Great Plains, which consists of 7 different states Minnesota, Wisconsin, North and South Dakota; however, they were also known to live in parts of Nebraska, Illinois, and Montana. “The name Sioux is an abbreviation of Nadouessioux. (Britannica) The name was given to them by the Ojibwa (Chippewa). Sioux means, “Little snake”. The Sioux tended to follow the pattern of the buffalo, which is why they are found in multiple locations.
Have you ever heard of the Cherokee Indians? Sure you have! Just as a reminder, they are the biggest tribe, and most known of out of all the Indian tribes there has ever been in the southeast. They are very important to American History and helped shaped us to be the Americans we are today, which is clearly what I 'll be explaining in this paper. Throughout the paper, I 'll tell you everything you need to know about the Cherokee Indians and continue to relate to the thesis.
The Cherokee tribe is known as one of the earliest and largest Indian tribe in North America. They are federally recognized even today among several states(museum). While they slowly became Americanized by the Europeans who came over to America, some still practice their typical Indian rituals publicly today. Most converted to Christianity and their government in Oklahoma is based off the American government with three branches. One would believe that the Trail of Tears could have completely vanquished these Indians but many made it through the horrendous trial and kept the Indian bloodline going even present day (Conley).
He turned his life around which in turn gave a new found light to the Indian people. For the rest of his life he would be known as Tenskwatawa, the “open door” a name that was used because of the new role he obtained as the religious leader of the native people. He wanted the Indians to go back to their traditional values and more importantly rely on the food, clothing and equipment used by their ancestors. Tenskwatawa used religion to unify the American Indians by going around town to town and introducing the natives to his practicing. His teaching assured them that the master of life had not forgotten his children, and if they would follow Tenskwatawa they would, indeed be revitalized. With the faith that he gained he was able to restore peace and order in the world full of chaos that the Indians were
Tecumseh’s biggest concerns were that his people would not live according to the Prophet which was casting off all elements of the Euro-American society. He believed that his people would turn to alcohol, firearms, and trade goods set out by English ways, which was what the Prophet said, would be detrimental to their ways. No matter what, Tecumseh was going to make sure the Indian way of life would continue forever. He led a revolution of young men who thought the leadership structure needed to be looked over again in order to survive. They fought to make sure The Indians East of the Mississippi to keep control over their home land. Tecumseh tried to visit neighboring tribes to form an alliance to protect the lands held by the Natives. He was successful in the way the Southern tribes would accept the alliance, but unsuccessful with others when some refused to join the reliance, such as the Iroquois tribe.
Tecumseh’s father was very important in his life because his father was killed at the Battle of Port Pleasant during the French and Indian War which sparked his mom, Methoataske, leaving her children. Not only depressed from her husband's death, but frightened by the impending American Revolution, she left her children with Tecumseh’s elder married sister,Tecumpease, and elder brother Chicksika. They moved to the Sha*-wnee tribe, where Chicksika had taught Tecumseh to be a hunter and warrior. When Chicksika was killed in an unsuccessful attack in Tennessee Tecumseh continued raiding white settlements till he finally returned home in 1790.
I picked the Chinook tribe, which is a northwestern tribe located around the columbian river, or today's Washington and Oregon. The land and climate really defined how the Chinook people lived and is why it’s defined as a folk culture. The Chinook tribe is around large forests that the tribe uses to build canoes and large houses. The Chinook tribe would build these large houses and many people could live inside, these houses were made out of red cedar a tree that was very abundant in the area. The Climate where the Chinook tribe located was very harsh but easy at times. The climate existed of very rainy seasons with very hot seasons that defined what the Chinook tribe would wear. The Chinook tribe would wear little to nothing on the hot
The Cahuilla were a Native Southern Californian tribe that occupied the Riverside County, Higher Palomar Mountain Region and East Colorado Desert. The tribe was divided into two groups or moieties know as Wildcats or Coyotes. As the Europeans and Spanish Missionaries considered the desert an inhospitable place that was better to avoid because
. The Chickasaw, Cherokee, Choctaw, Creek and Seminole nations were the only 5 major tribes that were highly affected from the Indian removal acts and were forced into Indian reservations ex. Doc D. The Indians were highly influenced by Tecumseh and gave him immediate obedience and respect for he was an “uncommon genius, which spring up occasionally to produce revolutions or overturn the established order of things” ex Doc. C. Yet due to the want vs. need for land the vicinity of the United States when Tecumseh died in the Battle of Thames from American forces. Tecumseh’s goal of establishing a independent Indian nation were clearly ruined and the recruitment of the 5 nations up towards the east of the Mississippi river.
Andrew Jackson did not like that the Indians were still living in the eastern part of the US. He proposed that they all be moved out west past the Mississippi river to improve on the white settlements in the east. When the Indians were moved the settlers would benefit greatly from the selling of the Indians land. The Indians could not do much in that aspect. They could hardly defend themselves. Chief Black Hawk led a group of the sac and hound Indians back in to Illinois yet the militias pushed them back across the
The Shawnee chief Tecumseh a well-known Indian, became famous for his attempt to merge the Native American tribes against the Americans. In 1809 he began his voyage in order to profess his requests. A few years later Tecumseh arrived in the Osage Nation around the region of Oklahoma and tried to influence the Osage Nation with his political agenda. Tecumseh had wanted the Osage Nation to join the pan-Indian confederacy. Jointly with other unique tribes and the military aid of the British troops. Tecumseh the Shawnee chief called upon the Osages to start or commence war against the Americans. The speech Tecumseh presents gives evidence of his political standing.
treated the Indians poorly, and it overall helped out the government. The first argument was about the Indians claiming the land before the U.S. which shows they can stay wherever they want. Next, the U.S. treated the Indian tribes poorly. This shows that the Indian tribes have reasons for doing what they did. Last of all, it affected the U.S. government in a positive way. This is because the Cherokee that stayed and followed Georgia law, helped fight in the war. We have to protect our enemies if it means that our government could be
