Since then it continues to evolve into an integral part in catching criminals and further understanding their motives. The BAU is a relatively new science and is still evolving today. The unit that focuses on crimes like serial and spree killers is now known as BAU-2. Robert Ressler worked alongside Douglass interviewing serial killers. The serial killer that disturbed Ressler the most was Ted Bundy. Ted Bundy was active between 1974 and 1978, known for his good looks, charming personality, and violence. It is thought that Bundy killed around 30 women but the total number of victims will remain unknown. In 1977 the BAU got involved in the case following Bundy’s escape from a courthouse in Colorado. The BAU used Bundy’s previous victims to warn potential victims. The victim profile was, “…young, pretty girls with dark hair parted down the middle, and that they could be targeted by Bundy.” This was the first time the public was warned by given a profile concluded by the BAU. Ted Bundy’s case also led to the BAU creating a national database based on the modus operandi, personality, and victim type. In 1979 the bodies of young African American children were discarded in Atlanta. It became known as the Atlanta Child Murders. Because the children were all African American the local authorities believed it was all racially motivated killings. The top suspects being the Ku Klux Klan or Neo-Nazis. Historically, up until then serial killers had only been white men who killed others of their own race. After the 16th body was found the BAU was given the case. Agent Douglass went to Atlanta and provided a controversial profile. Douglass concluded that the bodies were dumped in black communities meaning the murderer was comfortable in the area. Therefore, it was likely he was African American. Local authorities were hesitant to accept it was someone within the community committing these crimes. Douglass’ profile predicted that the next body would be dumped in the river. This profile ultimately helped catch the 23 year old Wayne Williams. ( Grimminck,
