I watched this TedTalk on 6/16/2016, and the name of that TedTalk is Uber’s plan to get more people into fewer cars. The video was filmed on February 2016, and the speaker is Travis Kalanick, the co-founder of the peer-to-peer file sharing company Red Swoosh and the transportation network company Uber. The purpose of this memo is to understand the goal that Uber is trying to achieve. Discussion The speech is about the future of human-driven transportation, and how we can cut congestion, pollution and parking by using Uber which is getting more people into fewer cars. By sharing cars, there will have less cars on street, and less cars means less pollution. Sharing cars also means that not everyone has to own a car, and that will release a lots space from parking lots. We will have more space for parks and plantations which will create a better living environment. Through the video, I have learned that Uber is not the first one come up the idea of sharing cars. Jitney has applied this idea over 100 years ago, and it was created or invented by LP Draper. He saw people stand in a long line waiting for trolleys to take them to where they want to go, and he came up an idea, why not put a sign on the car that takes people to where …show more content…
Conclusion This speech well explained the advantages of using Uber. It used a lot of evidence to explain why use Uber can reduce CO2, save more space, save people more time. Those facts will attract more people’s attention, so more people will try to take Uber. However, it spend too much time on the history of Jitney, and the fact that Jitney eventually failed. Uber and Jitney are actually the same thing, and the failure of Jitney will make people start to wonder if Uber will fail too. However, the advantage of Uber is strong, and attractive. Overall, this is a good
Imagine a future with zero car accidents and taking a nap while going down the road. Imagine a future where there are no drivers, only passengers. And not just that, but imagine not worrying about having accidents or high insurance payments. With driverless vehicles, car accidents will drastically diminish and insurance rates will decrease, meaning they could have a better impact on the economy. Driverless vehicles will benefit society given that they will reduce accidents, can improve traffic flow by enhancing its efficiency, and protect the environment from harmful fuel emissions.
He attempts to spread consciousness about our current situation, and compares what other governments are excelling at and what our government is failing at. In order to raise awareness within the public, Singapore government makes driver “buy a permit to buy a car” (Source B) This process of buy a license and buying a car costs “roughly $10,000” (Source B) which can be discouraging for drivers because of its expense. Moreover, if the driver is that committed to driving a gas consuming machine, the government makes sure that the drivers know their permit fee goes toward the “mass transit system”. With this “business driven perspective” from the government, citizens are both economically and mentally impacted. Governments use drivers money to teach the public a lesson of conservation, and raises their attention at the same time. Webber hopes that this will provide “the opportunity” for government officials to learn some ways of regulation. He voices that the US may learn from a more “advanced” ( Source B) country such as a singapore, but it will be a challenge. Thomas Friedman seems to agree, and adds that “It will revive America at home,reconnect America abroad” In unity with these voices, the government needs to take action, and it has to be
Reduction of pollution caused by the many vehicles that are in use in the world today. Inclusion of more effective technology such as the IoT on the vehicles highly increases the value of a single vehicle thus generally reducing the number of vehicles on the road. Higher costs may mean lesser sales to the manufacturer but this is a main
The article I chose this week is by Ester Fung and gives light to a lifestyle I hope to never find myself…living in a big city without a car. Housing developers in big cities such as New York, San Francisco, and San Diego are opting to build apartment complexes and condos without the option of parking spaces for residences. One developer claims, “It’s the future…there is a strong demand for people who want to buy or rent units that are efficient”, while “local authorities seek to encourage the use of mass transit and free up space for parks, housing and other uses” (Fung, 2016). Parking decks and garages cost big bucks, and in cities where space is limited those decks have to be built underground, driving prices up and onto the consumer.
Missouri's governor, Eric Greitens, signed a bill “paving a road” for new transportation companies to easily operate statewide and supersede local fees and regulations. This doctrine will result in more jobs and will benefit the economy. Specifically, numerous Missourians will have a steady and good job as a Uber or Lyft driver since this will become an official job. With more jobs, Missouri will overcome unemployment, job loss, and destitution. These positive effects on Missouri will make other states consider passing this law. Uber and Lyft will now setup a statewide regulatory standards for the companies and their part-time, independent-operator drivers. Andy Hung, Missouri's Uber manager, is now creating more app-based services due to their
Watching “SpongeBob SquarePants” as a child made me realize that owning a vehicle is vital in order to get our desire destinations safely and punctual. There were numerous occasions where I found myself dependent on others. Though there are countless of bus stops I can use for transportation, I am not comfortable riding in one. Walking is another type transportation I took for school and work. However, a rainy day impedes a travel by foot. Additionally, riding my bicycle was another way I got around. My errands require extensive transportation on a daily basis. I did not want to be a burden any further. Luckily, I discovered Uber. I am pleased and relieved that I have discovered a reliable way to get to my destinations at a reasonable price.
Driverless cars are really expensive to buy.First,driverless cars will cost more money than a normal car,some people might not be able to afford it and it will be bad for Uber drivers and Taxi drivers,they won’t be able to earn enough money,and a normal car’s price will
In recent years, major cities across the globe have developed innovative new methods of transportation that could revolutionize the way humans travel and ultimately replace automobiles throughout the industrialized world. Many supporters of this movement believe restricting the use of cars will have a positive impact on society as a whole. Some people believe that taking away automobiles is preposterous given the gravity of which citizens depend on them; although true, replacing cars would have significant benefits throughout society that would outweigh this consequence and ultimately create a new global social order. Restricting cars in cities and encouraging alternate methods of transportation would reduce humans’ carbon footprint, make cities
Brian Gobler Dr. Osterhaus Writing 120 March 16, 2015 A Rhetorical Analysis of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie has a very unique background story. Her experiences help her to understand the importance of searching for the truth beyond just the single story one is told. In Adichie’s Ted Talk, “The danger of a single story,” she talks about her experiences growing up in Nigeria and her first experiences in the United States. Her message is very simple.
Henry Ford has released his invention to the public. It is a horseless carriage that he calls the automobile. He has told us that this contraption will eventually be made available to the entire world. This is going to have a radical change on our society, as we know it.
Compare this to the 36 seconds for a ride with an average price of $4.00 that NYC Uber passengers currently enjoy. Additionally, consider that it is already more cost effective to use a ride-sharing service rather own a car if you live in a city and drive less than 10,000 miles a year. This means that as automation advances, ride-sharing will increasingly be a cheaper and more attractive option and personal vehicles will greatly diminish. The future of transportation could conceivably be large fleets of autonomous vehicles serving as the central mode of transportation.
“A recent report by the Intelligent Transportation Society of America projects that so-called intelligent transportation systems (ITS) could achieve a 2 to 4 percent reduction in oil consumption and related greenhouse gas emissions each year over the next 10 years as these technologies percolate into the market.” This shows that the driverless car can reduce the number of pollution each year when someone purchases an electric driverless car they are helping the environment. Therefore, with driverless cars, there would be cleaner air in the environment for humans to breathe better and for plants to grow strong and provide more resources for us. Electric driverless cars would decrease the use of gas and reduce the amount of pollution in the air and make the environment
Self Driving Cars / Brianna Killingbeck: It amazes me how a car operate on its own without a human being in it. Your presentation really made me think about how much technology has advanced. It is a interesting point to bring up how self-driving cars could hurt our economy. This is something that we really need to consider before mass producing self-driving cars. However, as you stated, these cars would be much safer for humans. I really liked the gifs your used. The added a nice element to your topic as you were presenting.
On a snowy Paris night Travis Kalanick and Garrett Camp were having a difficult time hailing a cab, so they came up with the idea of “push a button, get a ride.” The first test drive was January 2010 in New York City, New York. Uber is now a thriving company used in St. Louis along with 523 other cities worldwide. The city where Uber is ultimately used is busy Washington, D.C. For 54% of males and 46% of females in the USA it is how they reach their next destination. 40% of the users are in the 24-34 year-old age range. The estimated net worth of Uber is around $6.3 billion. Only in Eugene, Oregon and Nevada is Uber fully banned. An UberX ride from Mary Queen of Peace to Busch Stadium is only $20-$27, on the other hand an UberBLACK is $56-$73;
Goodbye taxis and hello Uber! Why settle for a taxicab when you could be connected to luxury town cars by the click of a button? The Uber app is a start-up company based in San Francisco, California that allows its customers to connect to various drivers for transportation services through text messaging or the use of their mobile app, which allows them to reserve a car, and to track where your driver is. How the Uber app applies their rates is by the time and distance to get to your destination and that will vary from city to city. “In San Francisco, for example, the hybrid cars will cost $5 for the base fee, and $3.25 a mile after that. By contrast, the town cars cost $8 for the base fee and then $4.95 a mile. Taxis in San Francisco
