Los Angeles is the biggest city in the southwestern part of the state of California. Every city has the five themes of geography, which are location, place, human environment interaction, region and movement. Just like every other city, Los Angeles has them too! The location of Los Angeles is 34.05 latitude and -118.24 longitude.

Los angeles has a change in rainfall with a very dry summer to a winter rainy season. The driest month LA gets is july and august with an average of .04 inches of rain. There is presently much controversy regarding teen pregnancy, considering that many countries in the developed world experience a rise in adolescent pregnancies in spite of the fact that effective programs are installed in these areas. Teen pregnancy has been a major issue in Los Angeles in the recent years, but the fact that state authorities have been actively involved in combating the problem has generated positive results. It is probable that the struggle for abstinence and the practice of safe sex have become less important for high school students in Los Angeles in the last few years, taking into account that teen pregnancy rates have gone up significantly.

According to Josh Sides, author of “L.A. City Limits,” there are three reasons why the demography of Southern California shifted so much in the 20th century. Sides states that diverse racial composition, dynamic economic growth, and dispersive spatial arrangement are what makes Southern California what it is today. He believes people migrated to the Los Angeles area looking for a better opportunity for work and living conditions. In the book, Sides makes it clear that Los Angeles is the city where African Americans chose to reside in order to seek better living conditions. People, especially minorities, wanted to be treated fairly and they wanted to be looked at as equals. Sides gets this point across clearly when he says “…they wanted to be treated with respect, dignity, and equality in public…” It is because of these reasons that minorities began changing the face of not only Los Angeles, but the entire state of California.

Regions across the United States have been changed dramatically by the immigration trends over time. The region of Southern California is no different. When the people in an area change that areas culture is going to change as well, southern California is a great example of that. Yet while changes in history do not change the physical lay out of the area it does affect the culture tremendously. The culture in Southern California specificly is a mix of multiple people making it extremely diverse depending on the area that you are in.

A brief history on Compton and its population is that according to the U.S Census Bureau in 2010, the total population size was at 96,455 residents. This number of residents is lower than what was expected to see in California. After further investigation in the website, after five-year span in 2015, the population of Compton raised to 97,955 residents. Although the smaller population growth isn’t what it seems to be like in Arvada Colorado. But in 2016 in Compton California the total population size decreased to 97,550 residents. A decrease in 400 residents within the one year span. Both cities roughly over 1,000 miles apart do share some similarities and differences between them.

The United States of America is known for many of its outlandish and outrageous statistics in comparison to other countries. Statistics regarding obesity, homicide rates, and political issues have displayed many of the nation?s weak points. However, the amount of teen pregnancy has become so excessive that it is becoming a cry for help and a statistic that is greatly standing out and can no longer be ignored. In 1999 about one million teenagers experienced a pregnancy. This rate was twice the amount in England, Wales, and Canada and nine times greater than that of the Netherlands and Japan. About 78% of these American teenage pregnancies were said to be unplanned.

The third issue I would like to address is, the fall in the elderly age group. According to the city data website, the distribution in the residents age has seen a fall in its elderly population which includes both male and female equally. There is a constant rise in the age group between 10- 20 years.

There are several periods of population growth in Los Angeles: 1855 Gold Rush, 1885 Railroad, 1891 Oil Industry, 1914 Los Angeles Ports, 1932 Winter Olympics, and more. All of these periods have common: mass media. Mass media takes an important role within city population. It delivers information, rumors, and sometimes persuade or convince people.
