In 2012 Sandy Hook Elementary School was victim of a terrible mass shooting that prompted several states and cities to pass strict gun control measures. This sparked a widely debated and controversial issue for “gun friendly” states in the South and West, who responded with bills that would strengthen Stand Your Ground laws and allow weapons in most public places. The nation continues to be divided on gun control policies, as it is very controversial and continues to be a very hot topic in society today. There has been a rise in gun violence throughout the years, and it has been widely been debated that guns are too easily accessible and there is a continued push for stricter gun laws that can reduce the risk of gun violence.

On the other side, there are those that reference the persistence of accidental injuries and fatalities that are gun related. People on this side of the debate argue for the banishment of guns, for stricter gun control laws, and for restrictions on certain kinds of high caliber guns and ammunition. They argue for the safety of the general population and for the lack of responsibility of those in possession of guns. They additionally reference the excessive amount of gun violence in media such as music, films, animation, and video games trying providing moderate to exceptional evidence that access to excessive violent imagery in conjunction with what they view as slack gun control policies is an equation for tragedies that society is unprepared to handle and should not have to. A major issue in the United States is gun control. Due to multiple mass shootings in schools and public areas, restrictions regarding guns have been implemented across the United States. Andrew Parks, a student at The University of Alabama, wrote an article against gun restrictions. His article, “The University should allow concealed carry,” supports the idea of college campuses like The University of Alabama, allowing students to conceal carry firearms. In an article written by Jennie Kushner, the opinions of students on the University of Alabama’s Police Department’s gun policy are presented. The safety of student body relies on the students’ feeling safe. That safety comes from less gun control laws and policies on campus. Each of the articles stated provides information against gun control in different ways.

“The right to bear arms”, an amendment so prioritized by our founding fathers that it earned the very second spot on the list of birth rights as Americans. However, with constant tragedies striking the United States, such as massacres in public high schools and universities, mall shootings, and attempted assassinations on state representatives, it’s no wonder law makers are constantly debating the topic of gun control.

People who appreciate activities like shooting competitions and hunting, use firearms responsibly. This use contrasts with other uses, which often result in consequences that can be both intended and unintended. With past and present mass shootings, and acts of bloodshed perpetrated with the usage of weapons; has triggered a focus on gun control that once again has been brought into the spotlight. Few issues are capable of terrorizing Americans like a shooting on a college campus. Each time, any possibility of debate is drowned out by sensationalized media coverage. There are two polarizing opinions. One argues that responsible, concealed weapon carrying citizens could have prevented the loss of life. The other blames the proliferation of firearms as the primary cause of the violence. Perhaps this powerful rhetoric led our legislature to allow campus carry on our campus, Texas State University. This dichotomy of opinion will be explored through a thorough examination of handgun carrying, Texas policy, and academic research on the topic.
