Department of International Relations(DIRCO) interpretation of Ubuntu:
The Department of International Relations conceives of Ubuntu as a moral theory which foregrounds the idea of the diversity of nations. This is especially in South Africa that embraces the ideals of non-racialism, non-sexism and a rainbow nation. However, within this diversity there exists a common humanity. This interconnectedness between states and a state and its people creates interdependence between both parties. Hence, South Africa conceives of its development as dependent on the development of the states within the African continent and that a state’s development and success is interlinked to the success, happiness and growth being experienced by its own people.

Ubuntu is a value-based relational approach that identifies an individual actor’s identity and well-being as linked to the greater community around them. It prescribes certain conduct and actions that an actor must embrace to ensure the well-being of themselves and those around them. The key tenets of Ubuntu in this essay are:
1. Equality because we are of the same, we must treat each other equally. The ability to treat others well exhibits your own humanity especially the vulnerable. Cannot place oneself above others due to minor differences or conduct one’s self in a manner detrimental to another.
2. Empathy and Compassion: The tenet of equality requires individual’s to be considerate, empathetic and compassionate for others. That individuals must demonstrate a good attitude to others and act in a manner which is sensitivity, generous and beneficial for all. Specially to care for those within the community without an expectation of returning
Barbara Lazear Ascher writes a well formed essay on the concept of compassion. Compassion is something that we do for others out of the kindness of our hearts. She focuses more on the poor, just how we show them sympathy, why do we do such things. Is showing empathy from our hearts or just for them to go away. I enjoyed this essay due to the fact, that she gives humanistic reasons on why people are compassionate, she doesn’t sugar coat anything, and lastly she breaks down the compassion that she sees everyday.

(1) Respect for persons: “Treating persons as autonomous agents and protecting those with diminished autonomy”. (Individuals with lessen autonomy are entitled to protection).
Often when using the words of empathy and compassion, many people envision them as having similar meaning. While they may share similar circumstances, they are actually quite different. Empathy is more of an emotional response with an understanding of a person’s particular situation; whereas compassion is an emotion that arouses an active response to alleviate a distressful situation. Nevertheless, these dissimilar expressions are paramount in the way people respond to the individual needs of others and how they reach out to others in their local communities. Barbara Lazear Ascher’s essay “On Compassion” not only creatively offers a very detailed description of the day in the life in New York City, but effectively draws a picture of

1.2 describe how to treat other people in a way that is sensitive to their needs
Equality – Equality is about creating a fairer society, where everyone can participate and has the
equality – It means that regardless of our race, gender, or sexuality, everyone should be treated as equal and given the same opportunities to achieve their best.
People should always be treated as an end (with respect) in themselves and never as a mere means (dealing with a person to achieve personal goals).
Compassion impels us to work to alleviate the suffering of our fellow man, to remove ourselves from the center of our world and put another there, and to honor the sanctity of every single person treating everybody, without exception, with justice, equity and respect.
Equality- can be described as breaking down barriers, eliminating discrimination and ensuring equal opportunity and
10. Empathy means trying to see things from another persons point of view and not judging them from your own set of morals.
Equality is a way of treating everybody in an appropriate way that suits their needs without showing them up and treating them
formulation we should treat people with fundamental dignity and respect. For instance it would be wrong to make false promises because we would be treating others as a means and not respecting them as persons with intrinsic and value. Treating someone as a means to an end and treating them merely as a means to an end in order to avoid misunderstanding is imperative. So an example of the second formulation is if I steal a book from you, I am treating you as a means to get the book only. If I ask to have your book, I am respecting your humanity.
The authors Koenane and Olatunji argue that “ubuntu as a moral theory encourages the ethic of responsibility and obligation towards others (Koenane, Olatunji 2017: 275).” Their argument comes as a rebuttal against authors Matolino and Kwindingwi who declare that ubuntu has become obsolete in the newly industrialized African sociopolitical context. They declare that through a framework of collectivism, ubuntu could potentially raise tensions, thereby encouraging xenophobia. From my perspective, I
