Houston Community College’s annual graduation ceremony will be held on Saturday, May 14 from 9am-noon at NRG Stadium.
President and CEO of the Houston Texans Jamey Rootes will be the keynote speaker at commencement. The ceremony registration deadline is extended until Friday, May 6.

The HCC Alumni Association is hosting a free Graduation Celebration for the class of 2016 on May 6 at 6pm at the West Loop campus auditorium. The event will have food, music, an inspirational speaker and giveaways. RSVP required: http://bit.ly/1SFbfH0
Walking across the stage is not required in order for students to receive their degree.
Last year, HCC awarded 12,949 degrees and certificates, but only 2,200 students walked the stage, meaning that less than one out of every five HCC graduates participated in commencement.
All graduating students must wear the official HCC regalia: a black graduation robe and cab. Students can purchase regalia at any HCC Bookstore through Thursday, May 12 for $50. Regalia can also be purchased at the rehearsal on May 13 and the morning of the ceremony on May 14.
HCC is holding a rehearsal on Friday, May 13 at 6pm at NRG Stadium, parking will be free at rehearsal. If students cannot attend rehearsal on Friday, they can still walk on Saturday.
On the morning of the ceremony, graduates should arrive at 6:30 am and park in the Blue Lot (Kirby Dr. at Westridge). On Saturday parking will be $12.

The 2015 Matriculation Convocation was held at 11:00am in the Murphey Fine Arts Center. As students entered the theatre, they were greeted with a musical prelude by Dr. Samuel Springer. As he played a beautiful melody on the organ, professors, and faculty ushered in wearing their decorated and highly esteemed robes. Once everyone was seated, they were invited to stand for the invocation, presented by Reverend Bernard Keels. Dr. Francis Murphey Draper then greeted all in attendance as well as paid special tribute to the President of Morgan State University, Dr. David Wilson. Following the greeting, Dr. Eric Conway, Conductor, introduced the choir, which sang a beautiful musical selection. Dr. Gloria Gibson then stood to introduce Dr. David Wilson. High school Commencement in the United States is a tradition like no other. Every June, high school seniors dress in their Sunday best and head to the tried-and-true ritual. To close off the installation ceremony, Ms. Fern Bren, the Assistant Principal of Pupil Personnel Services, gave a moving speech to all the students and thanked everyone for coming and thanked Ms. Filomena Daniels, the Arista/Archon Coordinator and even gave her a bouquet of flowers. The students then stood up filed out the auditorium towards the refreshments which included small wraps, brownies, cookies, and water.

Where the students have their graduation ceremonies has been debated by students for many years. Although outdoor graduations may cost more than indoor and require a lot more effort, they could be worth a student’s time and money in the end. That is why an outdoor graduation should be a student’s first choice over an indoor graduation.
