A monk, by the name of Baba Hari Das, once stated that, “Children copy their parents, friends, and teachers. They will develop the habits of the people around them.” Our own personal experience tells us that this is true. People who grow up in proximity and relationship with their parents, develops traits which develop from their experience of the parents. We can cultivate a wide variety of traits and capacities which can include personality, social skills, ability to deal with stress, and even psychosocial attributes from our parents.
The Artifact that I chose to represent this idea is a commercial from National Association for Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect in Australia. This commercial begins by showing normal habits parents might engage in, like talking on the phone while walking or waiting for the subway. As this public service announcement continues, the habits become darker, a mother struggles with a hangover, a father abuses his wife, and a mother is shown violently yelling at another person while driving. In each scenario, not only is the viewer watching the parents engage in these actions but we are also shown the child mimicking the behaviors and communication patterns of the parent. The National Association for Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect ends the video with the phrase, “Children see. Children do.
