Maxine Kumin?s, Woodchucks provides an interesting and creative perspective into the mind state of those influenced by nazi warfare. What begins as a seemingly humorous cat and mouse hunt, reminiscent of such movie classics as Caddyshack, soon develops into an insatiable lust for blood. Kumin?s descriptive language provides the reader with the insight necessary to understand to the speaker?s psychology as they are driven beyond the boundaries of pacifism.
Racial segregation was one of the most controversial and pressing issues of the 20th century. Prior to the abolishment of this legislation, various countries, including America, practiced this racist policy. However, while the country has long banned segregation, there are nonetheless certain groups, both religious and ethnic groups, today that chose to exclude themselves voluntarily from the society. A perfect example of this is the Amish community. For many years, this religious group chose to separate themselves from the rest of the society because of their belief that they are the “chosen race” and “God’s people”. Although many disapprove of this voluntary segregation, many believe that there are certain benefits or advantages in excluding themselves from the others. Accordingly, some scholars assert that there are similarly certain disadvantages to this system.
My story I just read was Mrs.Majeska and Sara Duck.I think she is a mental woman that was ready to go out in the spring. She put on her brown sweater that came to her knees, she also put on her boots that came to her knees. She went to go out to get leeks for her soup. She found a red rubber duck. She grabbed it and took it home and she said to it ‘You are going to get a .bath’.So Sara got a bath and was happy to live with Mrs.Majeska
Amish culture is a European born group of Christians who are descendents of Mennonite church. Due to few fundamental religious differences, they separated from Mennonite regime which made them go through a series of violence causing a remarkable decrease in their population. However, after gaining ground sin United States and Canada, they are living their lives peacefully in isolation. The current culture of Amish people is a true representative of simplicity, humility, thrift, obedience,
In Martha Ostenso’s Wild Geese, there are many issues surrounding power and control throughout the novel. Many of these issues are because of the main character Caleb, and the control he holds over many other characters. There are three main issues associated with power and control in the novel: The power Caleb holds creates fear and hatred for him from other characters in the novel. The power he holds also causes his children to dream about things in another life and become rebellious against Caleb’s wishes. Finally, Caleb’s control and power ruins him as a character and he suffers from nemeses. These issues surrounding power and control are important to characterization, plot development, and the relationships and conflicts between characters.
The book I read was Hoot. It was created by Carl Hiaasen in 2002, and won a Newberry Honor 2003. The story starts out with Roy being bullied on the bus by a large, unruly enemy named Dana Matherson. Dana had mushed his face against the bus window when he saw a odd boy, running bare foot on the street. He decided to chase the boy, but Dana kept grabbing him, he punched Dana so hard that it breaks his nose. Roy then ran but got hurt by a golf ball and forfeit. Roy recently moved to Florida from Montana, which he was sad about, his father worked in the Federal Department of Justice, and he has moved to 6 different places for his job. Montana was Roy's favorite. Meanwhile, Coconut Cove is getting a new pancake house from Mother Paula's company.
Mark Twain’s Baker’s Bluejay Yarn is a story of a determined blue jay as he works to fill a “hole” with acorns. A pivotal moment in this story is when the blue jay states “-but I’ve started to fill you, and I’m d--d if I don’t fill you, if it takes a hundred years!”(139).At this point in the story, you see the jay’s character to change from one of curiosity and bewilderment to one of determination and stubbornness. This significant moment in the text can lead the reader to detect a theme similar to the jay’s demeanor: hard-headedness and determination. He works a long while, filling the hole with acorns until “he could hardly flop his wings,”(140). The blue jay was willing to work so hard for something so small and insignificant, which shows
The Documentary “The Devils Playground” is based on the lives of Amish youths who go on a journey called rumspringa and try and decide whether or not to devote their lives to the Amish church. This documentary explained that the Amish religion is a branch of Catholicism in which the members do not get baptized until they are adults. The reasoning behind this is that the Amish live a very minimal and secluded lifestyle and they feel that before committing their life to the church and to Christ a person must be old enough to know what exactly that promise entails. An Amish community is comprised of people who spend a majority of their time working and helping their neighbors; they do not have many basic commodities such as electricity or cars. When an Amish youth turns sixteen they are able to go on what is called rumspringa, on which they go out and experience the real world beyond the secluded Amish community in which they grew up in, these kids are given a whole new level of freedom. This journey, in a way, exposes these kids to a sociological imagination, which allows them to, “understand the larger historical meaning for the inner life and the external career of a variety of individuals.” (Mills 1959). This means that these Amish kids are able to see how their life’s play into the bigger picture of society and how a majority of others live their lives. The point of rumspringa is to push these kids right in the mix of the world with no previous exposure in order to

As a lover of entertaining stories like _A Tale of Two Cities_, _Uncle Tom's Cabin_, and _The Importance of Being Earnest, sitting down and reading a dull textbook is not always my favorite thing to do. However, reading is one of the most effective ways to learn a concept, so having good textbooks is important. Greg Baker's book, _Fitly Spoken_, is a small book that walks its readers through many important elements of communication such as how to communicate with your children, spouse, or enemy. Baker provides many Bible references to illustrate the divine basis of his points, although I feel that he focuses too intensely on the human aspect of our relationships and does not stress as frequently as he should how our view of and desire for God
The Amish people don’t simply talk when it comes to helping and supporting their peers within their community. They’re entirely committed to being there for each other when challenging times arise, or when disaster strikes. They have a profound respect for others, and demonstrate what it looks like to live by the Golden Rule. One of the Amish customs that is most admirable is the way they care for their family members and the rest of the people in their community. When a young Amish family decides to build a new home or there is need of a "barn-raising," the entire community pitches in. Many men work together on the
Set in the Antebellum South, Mark Twain’s Adventures of Huckleberry Finn documents a landscape that differs greatly from the poised and picturesque scene associated with the contemporary South. Today’s South is synonymous with with ice cold pitchers of tea, ceaseless etiquette exuded on wraparound porches, and seemingly romantic drawls. However, the South that Huck resides in, tells a different story. Specifically, his South is a place where suitable behavior is associated with the acceptance of slavery, and racist slurs pepper every sentence. As a result, any deviation from these behaviors leaves an individual ironically branded with a connotation of being uncivilized. Due to this distorted view of ethics, any character with even a shred
Genre #7: Since the project is named Billy’s Scrapbook I decided to add a few photos that were major key points in his life. For instance, the saucer , his daughter’s wedding, a Tralfamadorian, and the Veteran Hospital all point to his story of his encounter with Aliens. After getting electro shocked for his mental breakdowns, my speculation leads me to believe it made his grip on reality loosen even more. A scrapbook also contains mainly happy or positive moments of one's life and Pilgrim certainly believed that his trip to Tralfamadore was soul changing. I wanted to do polaroids since my bookmark was a photo I took with my 1970 polaroid and is close to the time frame of the book. I think it made me able to incorporate a piece of me into this
“Mr Quackers isn’t your everyday Ducktator. He ruled over the great nation of Ducktopia with an Iron Beak and a waddle of pride.” The Television blurted out the words like a gunshot during hunting season. The office sat stories above the busy duck lives, Mr Quakers stood peering out the window of his empire. It had taken him a long to get to where he was, once just a simple duckling he had risen to be the great Rouen he is today. He turned around as the door behind him pecked open.
