The Argument From Design

God’s existence has been a prevalent question throughout much of history. The existence of God has been debated upon by theologians and philosophers alike. As each different field approaches the question in different manners, diverging arguments have arisen both for and against the existence of God. Theologians approach the issue biblically and through a faith-based standpoint, however, philosophers simply try to prove God’s existence using logic. A multitude of arguments have stemmed from this logical thinking, nevertheless, there are a few dominant arguments that are worth exploring in depth, one such argument being “the argument from design.” While no argument involving God is without flaw, “the argument from design” is an argument worth exploring in depth and in which agreement can be found. …show more content…

The argument originates from examining the world and taking notice of the intricacies in nature. Be that noticing that “there are bugs for birds to eat, bark for bugs to eat, rain so trees can grow, clouds to produce rain, and so on” (Solomon, 2017) or, as Thomas Aquinas noticed “..things which lack intelligence, such as natural bodies, act for an end….(and) whatever lacks intelligence cannot move towards an end, unless it is directed by some being endowed with knowledge and intelligence; as the arrow is shot to its mark by the archer” (Solomon, 2017). Essentially, what is being claimed here is that God must exist due to the way in which nature appears to exist in constant harmony or that nature functions seemingly independently, despite the fact that an arrow cannot fly without an archer, much in the same way that a seed cannot grow without a cultivator. Therefore, by saying that a plant cannot continue to grow, die, and reproduce without being instructed to do so, there must be an instructor such as
