The United States of America was always the greatest nation since it was founded on July 4, 1776. Throughout history the United States of America has always been known as a supreme and elite fighting force on the globe. One of America’s most elite fighting forces and one of the most well known throughout the world is the United States Marine Corps. However the Marine Corps was not always the prestigious group of soldiers like it is known to be today. In fact, the Marine Corps went through over a century of the government contemplating their existence and deciding whether or not they would keep the Marine Corps as a part of their fighting force. According to Merrill Fabry, writing for Time Magazine, when this force was first raised during …show more content…
3).The early life of the Continental Marines was not an exciting one, nor was it very sought after. In all, there were 131 Colonial Marine officers and probably no more than 2,000 enlisted Colonial Marines (para. 3). In 1765, the Colonial Marines took part in their first war that was the American Revolution. Merrill Fabry, writing for Time Magazine, states that the newly formed Continental Marines soon launched a successful mission on the British fort Nassau in the Bahamas, and according to a 1921 Marine Corps Gazette article, they participated in the battles of Trenton and Princeton (para. 4).
Creation of the Marine Corps is very special to every Marine. Fabry continues on saying, the Marines Corps celebrate their original date of their creation on 10 November 2017, but the service was in fact was actually founded twice (para. 1). One of the biggest hurdles the Continental Marines had to face and overcome was that after the American Revolution ended with the Treaty of Paris in 1783, the Marines were disbanded. It was not
The history of the United States military is a very prestige, brave, heroic, and memorable one at that. Starting on September 3, 1793 the United States was officially it’s own nation and it’s own military. At that time many other countries didn’t believe that we would succeed but, now we are one of the strongest, freest, and most prestige country to possible ever be developed.
The Marine Corps does two things: make marines and win our nation’s battles. Winning battles depend on how well we make marines. Those who have earned the title have been polished and honed by attentive mentoring. We have to remember that to sustain the transformation
was signed, and the American Revolution came to an end, the Continental Marines disbanded, and were re-established on July 11, 1798, as the United States Marine Corps. One of the most famous deployments that the USMC has been a part of, were the operations against the Barbary pirates, along the
The Marines are a highly mobile amphibious attack force. Marines are trained to attack from the water and establish a beach head, an area of control on foreign soil. After the Marines take territory, other armed forces such as the US Army move in to maintain control, while the Marines move on. Marines are mobile, lightweight, and very rapid. I would compare the Marines to the head of the spear, wedging in to get a foothold and racing ahead once the land has been secured. In addition to acting as a lightweight attack force from the ocean, Marines are also perfectly capable of taking territory on land. Marines are trained for rapid deployment, and are often the first US military personnel on site. Marines also guard American embassies overseas, providing embassy security and safety. In volatile areas, being a Marine embassy guard is a very risky job.
The author points out various examples of the Corps short-comings throughout history. With the Marine Corps already struggling to stay atop its game, it didn’t shed positive light on the situations. With that said, it’s hard to point out the flaws of the Corps without also showing its achievements and how we can overcome any obstacle we are faced with.
In December 1776, the Marines joined Washington’s army at Trenton to help slow the progress of British Troops through New Jersey. Washington was unsure what to do with the Marines, so he added them to a brigade of Philadelphia militia. Although the Marines were unable to arrive in time to greatly affect the Battle of Trenton, they played a part in the American victories in both the Battles of Assunpink Creek and Princeton.
On November 10th, 1775 the Marine Corps was established in Tun Tavern during the Revolutionary War. Since that time, the Marines have played an important role in securing America’s freedom through countless battles. The Marines have distinguished themselves as an elite force specializing in military tactics which assist in defeating the enemy under any circumstance. The Marine Corps is a small branch with limited personnel which allows them the
The U.S. Marines traditions consists of reciting the rifleman 's creed, the honor of being "first on foot, and right of the line"; moreover, performing precise drill movements. All recruits learn to recite the rifleman 's creed since World War 11. In 1876, the Secretary of the Navy presented the Marines with the honor of being "first on foot, and right of the line". The U.S. Marines learn to perform precise drill movements for audiences across America without being told. They are required to be financially secure and highly educated. They fight on land, air, and sea.
Just like Nicholas Herriman expressed, I often heard growing up that going to college and living on your own is a rite of passage to entering adulthood. I did not join the Marine Corps right out of high school. It was about two years after high school and living on my own when I decided to join the military, however the rites of passage was often used in the military as a way to signify that individuals are now a men for joining the Marines. What makes these two examples not qualify as rites of passage is due to the fact that they were not sudden events. These events were more of a longer transition.
Senior enlisted leaders are ask to come up with solutions to stop suicide in the Marine Corps. I am going to talk about three topics that I feel important to stop suicide; (1) All hands responsibility, (2) Spiritual guidance, (3) Mental ship awareness program. Suicide is all hands responsibility because Marines are one family that strive to do their best for the best interest of the institution. Marines care for one another and the moment someone commit suicide in the Marine Corps, it has a great impact on our emotional state of mind, mission readiness, and how to deal with suicide while still fresh in our environment. This is important to talk about it vice walking away and let the time cure the unanswered question. After a Marine commit suicide I find it a critical point to educate the force on why taking your life is not the solution, why any suicide is a death that touches someone (Kelly, 2015). Educating Marines that there is a solution to any problem and giving the solutions via resources within the Battalion is important because at least there is chance within reach with someone that you see every day.
Amphibious operations are deeply rooted in The United States Marine Corps’s heritage and traditions. The Continental Marine Corps conducted its first amphibious assault against the British fort at New Providence, Bahamas early in 1776. The Marines, commanded by Captain Samuel Nicholas, surprised the British garrison when they landed on the beach under a covering naval bombardment in their first combined land and sea action. Marine
The United States Military has been around since June 14, 1775. Many things have come and many have left. The President of the United States is the commander in chief, who is responsible for all decisions. Each branch of the Military has a unique mission of security and peace. But the United States Marine Corps is known the rapid reaction force because they are normally the first boots on the ground. The U.S. Armed Forces are made up of 5 armed branches, Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, and Navy.
First to Fight by Lieutenant General Victor H. Krulak is where the history, reputation, and truth about the United States Marine Corps meet. Within this 252-page book you will find a combination of historical fact, interesting background, and personal recollection from one of the men who helped shape what the Marines are today. The book is organized in seven different sections, each explaining a different facet of the Marine Corps. The first section explains in detail the struggle of the Marine Corps to survive as an entity over its long history. General Krulak explains how the Marine Corps had to fight for its current status as an equal organization with the Army, Navy, and Air Force. Even a series of Presidents were among those who tried
starts out with Marine Lieutenant General Holland M. Smith on the bridge of the command ship Mt. Olympus, off Iwo Jima on the morning of 23 February 1945 with Secretary of the Navy James Forrestal who said that the raising of our flag atop Mt. Suribachi means there will be an Marine Corps for the next five hundred years. Smith commented “When
The Marine Corps is the best of the best there is a reason why less than 1% of the United States population is Marine because if it was easy everyone would do it. But it is clearly not because there are only around 182,000 current service men and women in the Marine Corps. The slogan of the Marine Corps is The Few The Proud The Marines, and this is true too because there aren’t very many and they are very proud people because they have done something some people would call the impossible. Which is why I want to join because I like a challenge and this will be the most challenging thing I will ever do. But it will be fun because in the end, I will have a great career and I will be a better person mentally and
