In America, there is a predominant growth in multiple ethnicities and cultural backgrounds; leading to the usage of multiple languages in the American culture. There is a growing need for many people to learn and utilize multiple languages within the workplace and within one 's own personal life. The importance of bilingualism and the knowledge of multiple languages is ever increasing, and therefore becoming more important for the younger generations. The push for knowing multiple languages and becoming bilingual has many potential negative and positive effects.

Everyone in America has had to learn a second language in order to obtain a high school diploma, however this ‘learning’ of a language is merely a short class that does little to tie one down to a second language. There are few students who continue to seek more and more knowledge about their intended language. Some lose interest, while others make excuses by saying that it is too hard. However, learning more than one language has so many benefits that it is mind boggling to me that more people like to remain monolingual. Obviously time and resources are a concern, but there are so many ways to learn a language that can be catered to one’s individual needs. Think about all of the people in our nation whose first language is not English.

A foreign language is a language indigenous to another country. Johann Wolfgang von Goethe reveals the importance of learning a foreign languauge through the saying, " He who does not know foreign languages does not know anything about his own". Yes, the notion is true. As even for the expression of views one must be proficient enough in learning a foreign language. Besides, it is always a question whether it is better for children to begin learning a foreign language at their primary or secondary part of school. With that being said, some studies show that approximately one in five Americans speak a language other than English at home, and that is just in the United States alone. Moreover, the number of people who are able to speak more than one language is more than likely going to exhibit an increase in the near future as well (Callahan & Gandara, 2014). Along with an increase in speakers, an increase in demand for these speakers will increase too. Bilingualism opens the gateway to opportunities and benefits for people all around the world. However, many people do not see the importance of increasing the spread of bilingual speakers throughout the nation’s communities. Without these bilingual speakers, various people and their neighborhoods would not be able to communicate with one another because of the large language barrier sitting between them. That is why being bilingual contains many benefits, including its brain improvements, career benefits, and social skill boosts that will help out the speaker and his or her listeners in the long run.

No matter who they are or where they are from, there is one thing that connects everyone across the world. Language is a tool that connects people from around the world and every walk of life. We don’t often realize the importance of something that is such an ordinary part of life, the ability to communicate with the people around the world. Children who have learned a second language early in life hold many advantages over the children who don’t have a good comprehension of the language. These children who learn a second language are more understanding of other cultures, become better communicators, and are shown to learn more in school. We the people should not have to change ourselves to fit into the system, the system should change to better suit the needs of the people. As freshmen, it is still hard to imagine what type of careers we will venture off into. Oh sure, we have thought about the ideal lifestyle that comes with a career: A nice house, and cool vacations, and maybe even a spouse(polysyndeton). There are almost seven thousand different languages in the world. Some languages like Mandarin or Hungarian are those more difficult to learn and English is nowhere near their level of difficulty. Say a fluent Spanish speaker migrates to an English-speaking country like the United States, it may be a difficult transition for the individual to learn English even though that language may be one of the easier languages learn. A non-English speaker that immigrates to America may be able to get by in the U.S. without learning the language or with the help of other immigrants.
