The Benefits of Art
“Art enables us to find ourselves and lose ourselves at the same time” ~Thomas Merton (qtd. in “Inspirational Art Quotes” on Pinterest) There are so many benefits arts provide in education, the activity of the brain, and the health and well-being of others.
It seems like whenever you open yourself up to art, it opens you up and activates certain parts in your brain that wouldn 't normally be activated. There has been recent research that proves that arts actually help with students’ education and learning abilities. A wise man named Hal Sparks once said, “People think that the arts are optional and they aren’t. They teach a level of emotional depth that´s equally important to mathematic skill. You can replace some math skills with a calculator if you know how to operate the thing, but there 's no calculator for human interaction” Sandra Ruppert explains that students who are involved in arts learning experiences improve their achievement in learning and life. Researchers in the University of California surveyed high school and middle school students and the students who were more involved in arts had higher scores in standardized tests than those who were involved in little arts programs. Also, they recorded that the highly involved students watched less television and were less bored. (Ruppert) You would think that’s good, but arts programs are slowly decreasing. Music is said to keep your brain healthy as it ages, since listening to music or even
First, art improves the way we communicate our thoughts and emotions to others. According to Lesli Walsh, author of “Why We All Need Art in Our Lives”, when we create and view art, we use logic and reason to create meaning in what we are seeing. We are already practicing actions that help us view and create art, so it will be easy using them during our learning
To begin with, education and engagement in fine art programs are an essential part within the school curriculum because subjects such as mathematics, science, and language arts all require cognitive and creative capacities which are enhanced with the process of learning art. For instance, in the article, Critical Evidence: How the Arts Benefits Student Achievement, it states that “researchers
By having art programs in schools students gain skills such as, problem solving, critical and creative thinking, integration of multiple skill sets, and working with others. Qualities such as these are very necessary for creating exemplary students. Arts have already proven to help with many long standing problems but critical thinking is needed for jobs in the outside world. “ … Creating art supports problem-solving, creative thought and critique like no other discipline.” ( Schoales,2) By participating in artistic classes students gain discipline that most classes fail to teach. These valuable lessons learned from art can’t be found anywhere
Art helped me learn to express the feelings I couldn’t say and during that time period and I choosing to study it is the greatest decision I have ever made. Art is the reason I live now. It gives me hope, happiness, and an ability to escape. I love how it can change my view and to make me feel things. This year one of my illustrations was hung in the Museum of Contemporary Art: La Jolla, and I could not be prouder.
The thought of art is more than what you see it is what you feel and what you learn from looking at it. Art can heal the soul and create and new outlook on images we may see every day. Sadly, we may not always see the art in things, pieces, or, humans.
Art and music are such an integral part of our everyday lives. Understanding the basic elements of each is essential to interpreting their meaning. Listening to music stimulates every part of the brain and alters our chemical composition and mental state. Art is a tangible reminder of civilizations from the past; it shows us a glimpse of a culture and lifestyle different from our own. Art and music are designed not to simply entertain, but rather to educate and inspire us.
Art is a good observation and it's interesting as well. It lets us think it’s a lesson from the past. It’s also a good benefit to us. Art lets us incorporate techniques into our own experience. I think art wants us to see what the world is like. It wants us to see the image of the people or whatever the image holds and analyze it. It also, lets us observe by looking at events,
Composing music, playing an instrument, learning dance, reading notes, painting, preforming, etc. is not simple when learning its learning a whole different language with different concepts, and vocabulary. Art helps make students with problem solving skills. It teaches students that there is more than one solution to a single problem. It encourages students to open ended thinking which is thinking with no limitations. Regardless of you are learning how to sing, dance, how to paint, or to play an instrument students learn how to dedicate their time to become better which results in discipline and patience. Students use that progress of growing with other aspects of education and everyday life. Discipline, patience, language skills, critical intellectual skills, creative skills are just a few of the many skills that art teaches
A student who does not enjoy the fundamental classes might not find interest in going to school. The innovated minds that find tranquility in a music class or rather a basic art class is more likely to look forward to attending school the next day. Fine arts enhance the mind. It enhances what is already there or
While reading both opinions on how art, whether it be music or paintings, does or does not improve cognitive ability, I’ve come to the conclusion that it does. The articles that were in favor of the arts had great points. They were able to state their point of view, while backing it up with research and scientific facts. The articles against the arts stated that they do not improve learning ability, but rather auditory and visual skills. Despite auditory and visual skills not directly improving a child’s learning ability, they are still a substantial part in child development. Even so, the author of the passage still acknowledged creative imagination’s potential to help a child perform better in learning assessments and IQ tests. Involving in art in the school system, whether that’s learning about it or having the students do it themselves, really can improve school performance in several ways, including heightening brain activity, making them more attentive and enhancing their wellbeing.
Having arts in school is a way a student express himself or herself in ways they are unable to in any other classroom. It is important for each student to have their own identity and have ways of letting their talents and personalities shine. For some, it may be sports or scholars bowl, for others it is art, music, or theater. “I have several students who don’t care to be on the football field or on the basketball court. These students find their nitch in the practice room, on the stage, or in front of an easel surrounded by paints and brushes. As sports are a release for athletes, music and art are ways to express feelings and emotions. Fine arts has helped many of my students find their identity” (Wildeman). There are many benefits to music education include being disciplined, learning a skill, being part of the music world, managing performance, and being part of something you can be proud
It can improve test scores and educational ability in many different ways. Participation in the arts program shows higher levels of confidence in academics than those who don't have instruction in this area. A study was done in 2004 addressing Psychological Science it was discovered that there is an increase in children's IQ's when they were given instruction in arts and music. In the article The Arts are a Vital Part of Education, it states, students who take fine arts classes are 4 times more likely to receive more recognition for academic achievement." Students who take fine arts classes also tend to have more skill in learning and developing languages. Communication is extremely important in a student's life, therefore having the fine arts program to increase speaking skill is beneficial to the student. Performing arts not only allows children to not only listen to music but to play music which enhances their verbal capacities and
Good art allows me to flee the realms of reality. In my mind's limitless consciousness, I can escape the mundanity of everyday life. It opens a door in my head to a world only limited by my imagination. I am no more a slave to gravity, chained down on the earth when I am reading. I can be a bird and soar high above the clouds, or be a fish and swim deep down in the darkest depths of the ocean. I am there, I am that person, and everything else around me regardless of what it is, fades away. Sometimes these people are the one's I'd like to be but sometimes I encounter nefarious characters I wholly condemn. I am able to feel the emotions that the artist intends for me to feel. However, it is not merely reading or listening, but understanding
Art is personal; an expression of inner thoughts and desires, affecting the way I not only see the world but myself. In order for a person to grow they must know who they are, their aspirations, the true nature of their thoughts, and their actuality of their persona; the physicality of art has given me this knowledge. With practicing in the arts I am able to grow as a person and I am able to see that growth within me. For with the expression of creativity, comes an outlet, an outlet of the unconscious, forming and showing the reality of the mind. This outlet releases internal emotions and helps me to find tranquility within myself. This state of mind is a supplement for my own personal problems. Also, I am able to create new ideas, ones that help me see the world in a new light. I am able to form a relaxing and mesmerizing state of mind, one that leaves me fascinated with the world around me, along with a deep love for simplicity. Visual arts have truly given me an insight on my own mind and happiness in my life. This is why I full-heartedly believe and practice in the arts, to find peace of mind, not in the world, but in myself.
A lot of people think that art can only go as far as a class in school, but in reality there is art around everyone. Art can be a way of life for some people, and for others it is simply just something they pass every single day. What they do not realize is that art can have benefits in different aspects in their life, in children's lives, and even the world around them.
