So why do we still follow the same schedule? It seems every school year the discussion of year-round education captures the attention of the general public. Is it time for year-round education (YRE) to be the new norm? Ultimately, there are not that many pros for year-round schooling to be the new thing and the traditional 180-day schedule should be kept.

When it comes to the military certain things are automatically expected of a person. One of the most important expectations is time management and being on time. Every day there are any number of places a soldier is required to be at a certain time and as the old saying goes, “if you’re not fifteen minutes early, you’re late no matter the situation.” Some soldiers understand the importance of showing up fifteen minutes prior to an event or scheduled activity. Year round schooling may sound scary but read this and I might change your mind. Year round school is pretty much what is sounds like, except it is the same amount of school days as a regular year, and it has more spread out breaks. Year round school would be beneficial because it consist of less review due to “summer slide”, more “family time”, and longer more spread out breaks.

“Everybody is talking about going back to school and I am over here thinking…we ONLY have 5 more weeks until FALL BREAKATION! Year-Round Schools ROCK! ” Year-round schools is when they expand the 180 days into the entire year and take breaks in between. Neosho is currently doing a 10 month schedule and we have two months off for the summer. The Neosho school board is thinking about doing Year-Round School the Sophomores, Senior year. They are thinking about doing where we go to school for 45 days and 15 day off or 60 days in school than 20 days off. During the break, we can rest our brains. Year-round schooling has a positive outcome for students.

As a student who has participated in high school sports and taken multiple AP and honors level classes, I know the challenges that accompany the standard school schedule. Practices and games for the basketball team took up over three hours of my time six days every week. During school days, I had to leave my fifth period early when I had games, taking away from my valuable learning time. This forced me to try to learn the material that I had missed during the time I was participating in an event that allowed me to represent my school district. This, accompanied by the homework of all my classes, led to my loss of sleep. During my freshman year, I went to bed around 12 A.M. every night and woke up at 6:30 A.M. the next day, allowing me three

For some people, it may be difficult to manage time in order to keep up with school and still be involved with extracurricular activities. However, for myself, this was not the case. I have been involved in the Slippery Rock University Winter Guard since my freshman year, which requires much dedication and commitment. Competing in local and even international level competitions across the country, the dedication required for membership in the guard is extraordinary. My commitment to the winter guard as well as my determination in my studies has allowed me to prime my time management skills to be successful in both areas without compromising the quality of my efforts in either one. Moreover, I have also been involved in numerous volunteer opportunities including Special Olympics, therapeutic horseback riding, and sled hockey. I also have a job at the Student Health Center. Although I keep myself very busy, I have managed to maintain an overall GPA of 3.5. Through my shadowing experiences in physical therapy, I have seen that some days can be fast-paced; therefore, it is important to have the ability to manage time in order to accomplish everything effectively and

In fact, school districts that have been participating in YRE and extended school days (ESD) are raving about the benefits in pupil's achievement level, their new found enthusiasm in learning, as well as the many programs that exist in the extended day promoting the decline in latch key children.

Soldiers are late for flights, they miss appointments and in turn receive article fifteens, Senior Non-Commissioned Officers are being scolded by their First Sergeants for not being able to properly track their soldiers which in turn falls downhill to the squad leaders. In order to meet hard times and avoid unwanted corrective training, a soldier must develop a sense of time management. Punishment for failing to meet designated hard times can range from corrective training, such as writing a paper, or harsher punishment, such as article 15s, for more serious offenses, like missing movement. Deadlines are particularly important to meet when you are a leader of soldiers. Deadlines keep your mind focused on what you need to do and by when. Everything done in the military is based on time and deadlines. Whether is time to eat or get ready for a mission or even just a simple exercise. Reason for this is because setting everything up in a timely manner which helps keep everything organized; meet deadlines, and increase maximum productivity. This way people aren’t trying to this or try to do that all at the same time, and nothing will ever get done at that designated time with the work divided. With time management you set task #1, task #2, task #3 etc. in a timely manner to ensure each task gets done on time. Did you know that more sleep is all you need to be a better student? According to the Staff reports, “many high-school and middle-school students face increase in schoolwork and school activities, just as natural changes alter their sleep needs’’(Staff reports 1). Sleep deprivation is associated with later bedtimes and early wake times, which can lead to dangerous consequences. The American Academy of Pediatrics states potential risk of adolescent chronic sleep loss include behavioral issues, learning problems, poor impulse control and academic challenges. High school should start later because kids need a lot of sleep. Not only will it increase academic performance, but also boost attendance, test scores and overall grades.

“I need a nap.” these words are spoken many times by millions of high school students all over the United States. There are so many reasons why nap time is advantageous and should be allowed in schools. Napping has been proven to increase test scores, it has been proven to be beneficial to memorization, and it reduces stress from school related activities.
