American literature is the body of written works produced in the English language in the United States. Like other national literatures, American Literature was also shaped by the history of the country that produced it. The development of science and industry as well as changes in ways of thinking and feeling, wrought many modifications in people’s lives. This entire factor in the development of the United States molded the Literature of the country. The Seventeenth Century writings included biographies, treatises, accounts of voyages and sermons. There were few achievements in drama or fiction. Novel is an invented prose narrative form with considerable length and a certain complexity that deals imaginatively with human experience. It usually connects sequence of events that involved a group of persons in a specific setting. Novel in its broad framework, the genre of the novel has embraced an extensive range of types and styles like Picaresque, Epistolary, Gothic, Romantic, Realist, and Historical. The novel is a genre of fiction, and fiction may be defined as the art or craft of contriving, through the written word, representations of human life that instruct or divert or both. The term novel is derived from the Italian word novella that represents a diminutive historical parent form. America’s history is rich with literature. The beginning of American literature dates back to the Colonial times, but that began way before the colonists even stepped foot in America. There are three major groups of people from the colonial period that impacted literature. That is the Native Americans, Puritans, and the Rationalists.
American Literature, especially of the early settler and colonial period is marked by a deep sense of religion and a stress upon writing about matters related to religion. The development of early American literature thus can be seen to be a reflection of the religious ideals followed by the early settlers and colonists and it became a means of promoting a moral and ethical way of life.
American literature has evolved greatly from the Native Americans to 1870’s. American literature has changed, it teaches us how we have become more independent ourselves. The World on a Turtle’s Back, a myth, The Scarlet Letter, a book in a puritan setting, and A Rose for Emily is a southern gothic story. Throughout the stories and passages we’ve read this course all of them have left a impact on how and why the writers wrote about what they did. It was all because of American History which later went on and fathered American Literature. In the 19th century, political philospher Alexis de Tocqueville claimed, “the in habitants of the United States have… properly speaking, no literature.” This will be demonstrated as false by looking into the unique literature produced by America. Two examples we will be looking at are from Sarah Orne Jewett and Edgar Allen Poe. The pair will prove that Alexis de Tocqueville’s statement is not accurate, and that America has very distinct literature.

When a story is created with the incentive of entertainment, it is known as commercial fiction. On the other hand, if a story is created with the sole purpose of teaching a lesson by bringing us even deeper into the real world, then it is commonly known as literary fiction(“Reading the Story” 57).
