The Canada Goose
The Branta Canadensis, better known as the Canada Goose is a magnificent bird which can be found all over North America. People from all over North
America look towards the sky when the Canada Geese go honking overhead in their trademark "V" formation, and because they nest all over Canada and some of the
United States many people have a chance to witness the birds migration to the nesting grounds and back to the wintering grounds. The Canada Goose is respected by so many of us because of it's dignity and courage and refusal to give up. Over the years the Canada Goose has picked up many slang names, some of these are: Canadian Goose, Canadian Honker, Honker, Honker Goose, Big Honker,
Old Honker, Boy Goose, Bernache

The Canada Goose has ten vocalizations or calls which it uses to communicate with other Canada Geese, honking, long distance call, greeting, alarm, short distance call of mate, short distance call to goslings, special greeting for female, adult distress, gosling distress, and gosling contentment call as well as a scream of pain when the bird is bitten (Wormer). It takes a female goose a day to a day and half to lay an egg (Wormer).
Each goose lays and average of five to six eggs, sometimes only two and sometimes one goose may lay eleven to twelve eggs (Wormer). With sixty percent of all eggs laid hatching tow Canada Geese produce an average of three goslings per year (Wormer). Male to Female births are split down the middle, 50-50
(Wormer). The eggs are dull white and 2.86 by 1.89 inches to 3.43 by 2.34 inches (Godfrey) and weigh 3.5 to 7.5 ounces (Breen). The incubation period lasts twenty five to twenty eight days with an average incubation temperature of
100.4 degrees Fahrenheit to 101.3 degrees Fahrenheit (Wormer). Most of the
Canada Geese killed from hunting are twelve to twenty-three years old (Wormer).
Canada Geese in captivity however live an aver age of twenty to thirty years and sometimes even over forty (Wormer). The Canada Goose has a very rapid growth rate, in fact if an average human baby were to grow as fast as a gosling it would weigh one-hundred and
The purpose of this paper is to explore available research on the overpopulation of the Snow Goose on the North American continent. The snow goose has been rising in population since the middle of the century and has been escalating so much it is destroying their natural habitat. Wildlife managers have just recently begun to implement strategies to combat this problem. Mainly through the use of hunters the managers are trying to curb the population growth.
One bullfrog kept in captivity was said have died at the age of 16. Bullfrog breeding occurs around late spring to early summer, when the male bullfrogs call out to the female bullfrogs attracing them into their territory. Once the bullfrogs have mated, the female bullfrog can lay around 20,000 eggs which float together on the surface of the water. Due to the relatively small size of the bullfrog and the fact that its calls can be heard for some distance, the bullfrog has numerous different predators within its natural
Penguins lives in north pole. penguin eats fish, ray fish, squid, cod, krill and shrimp. They live for 10 years to 25 years. Penguins huddle up to keep warm because to protect them. A penguin is a bird but it cant fly. Baby penguins are born with out feathers. Penguins dive 50 to 60 feet to catch their food. when baby penguins are about 4 weeks old they huddle up to keep warm.
1995, 342 dead snow geese are found in the Berkley Pit. The Berkley Pit was an operating open pit copper mine in Butte, Montana from 1955 to 1982. The mine was opened and run by the Anaconda Mining Co. When the mine was closed in ’82 it was 1 mile long by ½ mile wide and 1780 feet deep. Pumps were run to keep the water down while mining operations were running. When the mine was closed the pumps were shut off and the water level in the pit quickly started rising at a rate of .7 feet per month. By July of 2013 the pit’s water level was 1047 feet deep. This is a local problem in Butte, Montana.
They place their nest in places where other animals and predators can't get it near water. They usually produce 2-7 white eggs. Both the male and female help sit on the eggs , which lasts for 43 - 46 days until the eggs hatch. The offspring are able to leave soon after hatching; but the parents will take care for them for weeks. They usually take to the sky for the first time when they are about 8 - 14 weeks
Canada Goose is a publicly trading high end luxury Canadian clothing company specializing in outerwear. Canada Goose was founded in 1957 by Sam Tick in Toronto, Canada after he immigrated to Canada from Poland. The Company was originally created under the name Metro Sportswear Ltd. Tick’s son-in-law joined the company some years after it was created, and it was during this time that the company began to develop and expand. It was at this time that Metro Sportswear was changed to Snow Goose, and soon after the now famous brand Canada Goose was born.
Populations of Canada geese display monogamy, forming pair bonds for life, only taking new mates after mate loss (Mowbray et al., 2002). Reaching sexual maturity by an average of 2 years old, Canada Geese search for mates (via honking) and copulate near bodies of water (2002). Males and females both select nesting sites near water and build nests using available nearby materials, usually dry grasses, twigs, and leaves (2002). Creating their nests near bodies of water, Branta canadensis can take advantage of abandoned nesting sites of birds and can also make their nest on top of mammal homes like beaver lodges, and mounds (2002). Clutch size depends on subspecies and if the nesting was late, usually ranging from 2-8 eggs (2002). Late nesting
The Caturnix quail are native to Europe, Asia, and Africa. In native lands, the caturnix quail are migratory birds but were captioned for their singing ability. Eventually, the species were interbred to make a domestic bird used for egg and meat production. Caturnix quails require about 1 square foot per bird. Cages, either a wire floor, or solid with bedding, can be kept indoor or outdoor. Most are housed outdoor because of their ammonia smell. If outside in winter, these birds will do okay if they have shelter and free from windy drafts. These birds can fly, so it is best to clip the wings if kept outside. Mealworms, crickets and wax worms are great treats and protein. Their main source of food should be non-medicated game bird feed, or
These white, sticky eggs are deposited by the female into the dark areas of tiny crevices which are hidden.
The female worms lay eggs up to 50 or 100 eggs. It takes 3 to 6 weeks to hatch the eggs depending on the climate. If its warmer the faster the glow worm eggs will hatch. They glow in the darkness to spot natural predators within the environment. Glow worms
They would migrate as far south as Texas and California. In 1960, their breeding range was also said to stretch as far as Missouri and Nebraska. However, in the 1930s, fewer than 100 swans remained in Canada. Their rapid disappearance started in the 1600s, when hunters began to overhunt them for their meat, skin, and feathers. By the late 1800s, their populations were decimated. It was also assumed that the loss of muskrats and beavers harmed Trumpeter Swan populations due to the fact they use their dens and dams. However, due to conservation projects, the species were able to recover by the early 2000s. They are now being reintroduced to certain areas, such as Minnesota, Wisconsin, Ohio, and
+ They normally lay two to three eggs once a year and the eggs hatch
The said study revealed that 85 percent of the Canada geese spent the winter in Chicago’s urban area, and 70 percent of these geese returned to the city before the open season begins.
Snowy owls tend to be like other owls in that they are monogamous and mate for life. They are fiercely protective of their nests and breeding area. They will go so far as to attack wolves if they believe them to be a threat (“Snowy Owl”, 2012). This extreme protection does not just stop with their own nest. They create an unintentional benefit to dark-bellied brent geese who nest close to snowy owls for the protection of their own nests. The closer these geese place their nests to the snowy owl’s nest the safer they are as well as if their nest is far from the snowy owl nest there is more danger and thus a higher chance of nest abandonment. The more protection these geese have the larger the number and size of their eggs as well (van Kleef, Willems, Volkov, Smeets, Nowak, & Nowak, 2007).
There is a legend that on the “crying” day a white dove flies down to the Wall and sits still on one of its stones. It cries out with a sad voice resembling human moaning.
