Based on our visits to the Cardinal Stage Company and Bloomington Playwrights Project, we have more understanding at those two theatre organizations. Even though they have differences but we can still see the similarities they have which are they all have good management skills and have leaders who have great visions. Therefore, it is not hard to figure out that leadership plays a vital role and is extremely necessary for nonprofit theatre organizations to have good leader. According to this article, there are three important elements that a great leader usually has which are: vision – “strategic planning and decision making”, vision communication – “communication, team building, and consensus building” and personal presentation – “drive toward goals, maturity and experience, professional demeanor, credibility, and self assurance” (Rhine, 39). During our visit to Bloomington Playwrights Project, the part I was surprised the most was when I knew that Mr. Chad Rabinovitz’s (producing artistic director of BPP) decision of spending more money on improving their facilities and venue in order to make it more professional when the theatre had a huge amount of debt. Usually, this would not be the leader’s decision because there were lots of risks that you were facing by doing it. However, due to his vision, he made this decision and the effect of it was great since they attracted more audience to come. This example represents that how important it is to have a leader with vision and perspective. Also, since it was at the beginning of Mr. Chad Rabinovitz’s career at BPP, he definitely needed to convince the staffs and board members to agree with his plan of rebuilding the inside part of the theatre.
