Through the career interview conducted with Ann Lobell, many themes of Management 104 have come through. They provide real life context to concepts learned and shed light on labor relations and corporate culture in the real world. Overall, there were takeaways to be found in reasons for long-term relationships with one’s employer, changes within the workplace, and satisfaction with work. One area to note that came up during the interview were the reasons Mrs. Lobell used for taking and maintaining her career at Highmark. Highmark was known as a workplace that empowered employees with opportunities for growth and understood the importance of a work-home balance. This proved to be particularly appealing due to the full career ahead of Mrs. Lobell upon graduating college in the 1980s. Additionally, Highmark was a well-known company in central Pennsylvania and offered competitive pay and benefits. As someone who was just starting a family, security in a reputable firm and appropriate compensation was crucial when job hunting for Mrs. Lobell. She expected to only stay with the firm for five years or so in order to gain experience that could transfer to a higher paying job, but stayed due to great upward mobility with pay increasing along with rank. As a single mom after her divorce, a stable and steady income was a strong incentive to stay in order to support her two children. In addition to the intrinsic motivators of empowerment and extrinsic factors such as pay, the culture
Growing up, the business world has always intrigued me, however I am far more curious and eager to develop knowledge about the operations of Business management and human resources. I have strong beliefs that the business world would not be successful without driven individuals who are respected and are developed in a positive working environment.
The career I chose to undertake as my profession is that of a mechanical engineer. Why do I want to become a mechanical engineer? Well, for starters, I would be able to design, build and possibly repair many various machines and other technologies that are complex. These technologies can range from being already in use on a global scale to new, futuristic designs that are highly technical. Also, this career includes being a sort of jack-of-all-trades, where I would possess knowledge in mathematics, physics, etc. Finally, this career offers me the chance to expand outside my immediate area since mechanical engineers are well desired around the globe as well.
“I feel sorry for the person who can't get genuinely excited about his work. Not only will he never be satisfied, but he will never achieve anything worthwhile” (Walter Chrysler). Deciding on what one wants to be in life can prove to be a demanding task. There are so many, yet limited, different opportunities in the world to have an excellent career and make a decent living while doing something one loves. It is limited because there are only a few specific career paths that someone could take to make good money. It is very difficult to make a fulfilling living being a garbage man. There are many different opportunities because, within these specific careers, there are usually various paths to take. Someone who has dreams to be a

I am very interested in a career field in Human Resources. For this paper, I interviewed Lillian Mannino who is a Human Resource and Personnel Manager at the UC San Diego Graduate School of Global Policy and Strategy. As a manager, Lillian serves as the link between the graduate school’s management and its employees. She is in charge of overseeing recruitment, employee relations, policy development, payroll, and benefits. Personnel management is a special branch of management that is focus on the concerns of employees at work and their relationship with the organization. Her educational experiences consist of a bachelor degree at UC San Diego in Management Science and a professional Human Resources certificate from UCSD Extension. She has been working in the academic administration for almost ten years and earned her current position as manager through climbing up the ladder. She started off working in this field as a student affairs officer then was promoted to an administrative specialist. Her prior work experience paved a path for her to build up professional experience as well as a solid network within the UCSD administrative system.
Nursing is an emotionally, physically, and demanding profession. It truly takes a distinct individual to become a nurse, although, anyone could complete the course work and sit for the NCLEX exam to pass the licensure to become a nurse, with that being said, not everyone that completes the requirements to become a nurse will exhibit the quality nurses should. Nurses require empathy, compassion, knowledge of expertise, time management skills, superb communication and writing technique, and calmness amongst an emergency situation are beneficial attributes to possess. Sarah Cook, RN, BSN, OCN has been a nurse for over seven years, working inpatient oncology for four years and the last one and half years in oncology administration facilitating the building of Parkview Regional Medical Center’s Cancer Institute. Sarah attended college at Ivy Tech Community College where she attained her Associate in Science Nursing degree, continuing her education at Indiana Wesleyan obtaining her Bachelors of Science in Nursing and currently pursuing her Masters of Science in Nursing and Masters of Business Administration.

At a time when many companies experience a difficult economic situation, they have to cut costs by laying off workers, and worse if your employees decided to leave for other competitors. Losing a talented worker is costly and to replace your top employee’s knowledge, experience and customer relationships is not something as simple as ones might think. So why do good employees quit? Even with high wages or great benefit, employees can still depart from the company if they do not get along well with their managers. So in order to keep good employees on board, the managers play an important role in knowing and matching their workers’ needs. In what follows, I going to analyze the case study: “Why are we losing all our good people?” which is about a fictional firm called “Sambian Partners”; what's really the reasons that is driving talented people out of the company and offering some solution to help Sambian stop the talent drain.

Amongst reading the material presented in this chapter about the job market trends, I was able to determine that the job market is extremely dynamic and has a great rate of change depending on the company’s needs. These adjustments also affect salaries, if there is a high demand for a position where there is a shortage in qualified candidates the salaries and benefits will be higher. As new technologies grow, the need for employees in these areas do as well, people need to maintain their skills up to date and seek professional growth to be able to keep up with the requirements and challenges of this fast pacing changing job market. However, some of these changes in the job market are being caused by the rapid change in the workforce. Companies are having to adapt some of their philosophy and the way they view employees, because so much has changed in the way the workforce behaves. Let’s examine the
Typically, when someone hears ‘medical field’, automatically you think of people with white lab coats and a stethoscope around their neck ready to take your vitals. Obviously this comes to mind because these doctors and surgeons are the face of the medical field, but in reality there is so much more. There are actually about 300 different occupations one can have in the health care field. A large part of that is nurses. Nurses are the basis of the medical field; they are almost as important as the patients themselves. They have always been a major part of our lives. Nurses have been with us since we first opened our eyes, from birth to broken bones, nurses were there. They have very difficult and extensive careers, they dedicate their lives to their work and to their patients. Some nurses spend long nights away from their family and friends to help others, at times their shifts can last as long as 24 hours. In my opinion nurses are the real super heroes, for this reason I have decided to pursue a major in nursing. I still have a lot to learn and many years of schooling to go, but personally its worth the wait.

Career progression is the aim for most workers, but career development is not something most of us think regularly. But without proper understanding of what we want from our career and how we can achieve our goals quicker, we can quickly end up dissatisfied with our jobs.
