Introduction
Desertification is the development of desert-like conditions in regions that have experienced human disturbance (Laura, n.d.). Drought, growing population and war are factors affecting desertification. They have their tremendous impacts; however, they can be solved.
Causes
Drought is one of the most related factors to desertification. It is defined as a long period of time when there is little or no rain. Drought can be caused by not receiving rain over a period of time. This is because of climate change which has been affecting us badly since many decades. It has been said that growing in population will lead to farming too little land because of crawling buildings in grasslands. The growing population can cause destruction of grass lands and this can cause desertification.
Drought and growing populations are not only the two causes of desertification but also there is a third reason which is war. War happens due to many reasons such as economics, land, resources, religious beliefs, and importantly power (Halo3Pro, 2011).
War contributes badly to cause desertification. People start eliminating themselves and leaving their lands empty and dusty. A great example that supports this point is the radiation in Japan. When the hydrogen bombs dropped on the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, thousands of people were killed. Additionally, the bomb left disastrous environment in the surrounding areas. Chemicals and poisons had destroyed everything including plants and the most fundamental gas for breathing which is oxygen. Right now there is a drought in California and it is due to the water usage. Bach in the gold rush due to miners mining for gold, the rivers became polluted and freshwater became limited. After the earthquake in San Francisco that cause a big fire, San Francisco was in dire need of water so they made a plan to built a dam in Hetch Hetchy. Drought, like a destructing earthquake or flood, is a natural disaster. Drought is an insidious hazard to nature. It results from a deficiency of precipitation over a long period of time over an area. Precipitation is any kind of moisture like rain, snow, and sleet. One can determine how malicious a drought can be by the amount of precipitation, and how long it is (Gleick, 2006).
The scarcity, depletion and polluting of water in one of the world's driest regions, is a problem that has perplexed the nations of the Middle East for decades. The riparian states of the Jordan River Basin include Israel, Jordan, Syria and Lebanon. These states are in a constant struggle over securing water rights for their respective states. The conflict over water is also overshadowed by the Arab-Israeli issues and the subsequent territorial questions. While territory is often at the forefront of the issues, securing water has also become a contributing factor in the conflicts of the past, and will continue in the future. Choices of conflict or cooperation will have to be made, given the diminishing amounts of water available.
There are a variety of causes held responsible for the water crisis in Africa. These causes have been taken from African’s control and desperately need to be solved. Climate change is one of the countless reasons that there is a high demand for water in Africa. An article entitled “Africa’s Water Crisis Deepens” written for the 2006 News Scientist, states that Drought, famine and spreading deserts have plagued Africa for the past 30 years. With the expansion of desertification, the process in which land becomes increasingly dry with little to no water resources, areas of land have dried out and are useless to humans due to the lack of rainfall on the African continent over the past several years.
Desertification is defined by Scott E Spoolman and G. Miller in their book Living in the Environment as “the conversion of rangeland, rain-fed cropland, or irrigated cropland to desert-like land with a drop of agricultural activity of 10% or more”.
