The Causes of Homelessness
As of January 2017, it is estimated that there 553,742 people are homeless in America. To be homeless means to be without a home, living on the streets. Umpteen studies, the book The Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls, as well as The Glass Castle movie, display the various leading factors building up to the plight of living without a home. Alcohol, mental illness, and poverty are a few known causes of homelessness.
“We took care of each other because you were too drunk to!” Jeannette Walls screamed at her father, in The Glass Castle Movie. According to Michael’s House, “Alcohol dependence in childhood often contributes to chronic homelessness. In such cases, alcohol may be a higher priority than paying for housing.” As shown in The Glass Castle, The Walls family had consistently been on the move, never knowing when they would receive their next meal. The family could not afford any expenses, as the father had utilized the family’s money for alcohol and gambling. Michael’s House also states, “When an alcoholic doesn’t meet such basic needs, it is less likely that treatment and recovery will occur. This can lead to frustration and depression, which in turn fuels more alcohol abuse.
