The American Revolution began for many reasons, some are; long-term social, economic, and political changes in the British colonies, prior to 1750 provided the basis for and started a course to America becoming an independent nation under it's own control with its own government. Not a tyrant king thousands of miles away. A huge factor in the start of the revolution was the French and Indian War during the years of 1754 through 1763; this changed the age-old bond between the colonies and Britain, its mother. To top it off, a decade of conflicts between the British rule and the colonists, starting with the Stamp Act in 1765 that eventually led to the eruption of war in 1775, along with the drafting of The Declaration of Independence in …show more content…
During the peace talks, Britain gained French holdings in Canada and Florida from France?s ally, Spain. Nevertheless, Britain amassed a large debt over the course of the war. To help pay off the debt, Britain came up with the idea to use the American colonies to generate lost money.
The French and Indian War changed the connection between Great Britain and the colonies. Before the war, Great Britain had become very wealthy from the colonies, after passing such acts as the Molasses Act in 1733, which imposed a tax on molasses. Molasses was used for a variety of things including making rum and was very important to the colonies economics. During the early period, the colonists had developed a nearly independent political and economic system.
Because Britain had amassed large war debts; the British Parliament passed the Stamp Act in 1765. The act was intended to generate money from the colonies that would help pay for the cost to keep up a stable force of British troops in the American colonies. All authorized documents, including deeds, mortgages, newspapers, had to have a British government stamp, in order to be considered legal.
Members of the Sons of Liberty, a patriotic secret group, were mostly active in opposing the stamp tax. They led a course of physical violence in which many official stamp agents were attacked by mobs and their possessions and property
The American Revolutionary war began in-part because of economic struggles England faced after securing safety for it’s colonies during the Seven Years War. England needed to increase their taxation on the colonists after the war to pay off its war debts. Prior to these taxes, the colonies were wholly content while under the wing of the British Empire. Not only because the protection the British provided, but also because of their deep reverence for the Motherland. Colonists were angered by with Parliament due to their lack of acknowledgement towards colonists rights and opinions. Colonists stood together in a defiant motion towards liberation from England’s tyrannous acts of lawless duplicity. Before British government was able to fully
The Act of 1764, also known as The Sugar Act, lowered the taxes on molasses but also it had more ways to enforce the tax. In addition to the tax on molasses they taxed things such as silks, wines, and potash. The Americans were outraged with this new law. The colonists did whatever they could to ignore this new law. The British passed the Quartering Act which basically said that the American colonists have to house and feed British forces who were serving in North America. This inflamed the
The massive debt of the French and Indian war was a very big struggle for Great Britain and the massive debt will start the revolutionary war. The massive debt happened right after the French and Indian war. Great Britain was 122 million pounds in debt. That is why they tried to tax the colonies. The taxes were called acts. This payed off part of the debt but the taxing didn't come to a pleasant end for Great Britain.
Throughout the French and Indian War (1754-1763), the relationship between the British and the American colonies underwent many radical changes. This war drew the British into America to fight the French alongside of the American colonists. Once the fighting began, the vast economic, political, and ideological differences between the colonists and their mother country of Great Britain surfaced. The French and Indian War impacted the political correlation between Britain and the American colonies because the colonies desired a new democratic government in place of the former English monarchy. Additionally, the war altered the economic relations between the two because of the establishment of numerous British taxations to pay for the war
The British law was the stamp act of 1765 that required the colonists to put stamps on all legal documents. From document 3 they put the tax on court documents and publications and the land agreements between the people. The reason that great Britain put the stamp tax on the colonists is because Britain had to pay for the French and Indian War. The stamp act put the tax on land and the warrants surveying for the land document 3. The colonists started delivering their papers by hand to resist the British law. Everything that to do with a court document you had to have a stamp on it or it would not be legal.
The American Revolutionary War was caused by the political disagreements between Great Britain and the American colonies. Most of the Americans initially didn’t want to completely separate from England but wanted to regain the rights that Parliament had taken away from them. England made war unavoidable with its unwillingness to negotiate, heavy taxation of the colonists that violated their rights, and strict trading policies.
War debt from the Seven Years War caused the British to impose taxes on colonists. The Sugar act caused the colonies to protest “Taxation without representation!” This eventually led to boycotting British goods hurting the war weakened Britain. Once news of the American Revolution had spread, France gladly chose to help America in hopes to severely cripple Britain.
There were many events that took place in the 1760’s and 1770’s that led to the Revolutionary war. During these years the British did many things that upset the colonists. These upset colonists would eventually get sick of all the British ways and fight for their freedom.
Next, the French and Indian war changed the economic relations between the British and the colonies was the taxation Britain started. Due to the French and Indian war Britain was in debt and they wanted the colonists to pay them back for the money they spent in the war protecting them. The colonies didn’t feel that it was right to have to pay them since the mother country should take care of the smaller one. Before the war the
The stamp act, as mentioned before, was one of the acts that took away some of the rights of the colonists. The act stated that no one can publish a paper unless it was stamped, therefore some people would not write or publish anymore because they did not want to pay. “Adieu Adieu to LIBERTY,” which translated to “Good-bye Good-bye to LIBERTY.” (Document H). This was very symbolic because they were getting taxed for a stamp, also because the picture shows a skull where the stamp should be. This is very depressing because people do not have the money to pay for the taxes. However, after the British won the war, they also benefitted from it. After the war, Reverend Thomas Bernard, started praising the colonial soldiers and he stated “Now commences the Era of our quiet Enjoyment of those Liberties which our Fathers purchased with the Toil of their whole Lives, their Treasure, their Blood.” (Document E). This refers to how people should start enjoying their freedom because they won the war. They started to feel their freedom when the Proclamation of 1763
The French and Indian War had a vastly negative impact on the relationship between the American Colonies, and Great Britain. After the war, Great Britain obtained a far more powerful presence in current political, and economic affairs than it had had before. In the years following the war, Britain imposed heavy taxes, and regulations on the colonies in an effort to pay off debt from the war. These taxes led to feelings of resentment in the colonies, and therefore, the colonists began to question whether or not Britain had the right to tax them. Eventually, the colonists began to fight for independence from Great Britain.
British wanted to be in control of the American colonies so they began to places taxes on them. The British were very powerful having a great military. The American had little to no military training. However they stood their ground and rebelled against the British. After the Peace of Paris of 1763, the British were confident in their mastery of North America. However by attempting to tighten their control over their American colonies they initiated a series of poorly thought out programs and policies which resulted in a disastrous rebellion.
On July 4th 1776, a committee, formed to draft a letter to the King of England, formally signed a document containing a list of demands and statements of position that ultimately started the Revolutionary War. This action was not popular with all the citizens of the colonies but the majority of the people were in favor of it and the cause prevailed. This declaration was a poke in the eye of England and forced them to try to put the colonies in their place and reestablish the Empire.
The British had control of the thirteen colonies for many years prior to the French and Indian War. After the war Britain took sole possession of the thirteen colonies. The French and Indian War had put Britain in debt so they began taxing the colonists. Britain also began to enforce laws made by the King of England. This led to the phrase "no taxation without representation". The colonists had no other choices but to try and settle their differences with Britain or attempt to break away.
The irregular and disorganized British rule of the American colonies in the previous years led to the outbreak of the Revolutionary War. Most Americans did not originally want to separate from mother England. They wanted to stay loyal to the crown. England’s unwillingness to compromise, mismanagement of the colonies, heavy taxation of the colonists that violated their rights, the distractions of foreign affairs and politics in England and the strict trading policies that England tried to enforce together made the revolution inevitable. The British were definitely expected to win the dispute because they significantly over powered the Colonists in most areas. They had more money, weapons, people, etc. However the American’s prevailed with
