ABSTRACT
There are approximately 800 000 Muslims in South Africa (REFERENCE). The Auwal Mosque was the
first mosque in Cape Town, initially occupied with Malay slaves and ‘free blacks’ in the 18th century.
In contrast, almost 100% of Turkey’s entire population consists of Muslims, at 74.28 million people.
The 21st century Yesil Vadi mosque is one of thousands in Istanbul used in its area.

As a monotheistic religion, early Islamic architecture was opposed to building mosques that were
specifically designed to accommodate the worshippers, thus focusing on a simple space for

the walls as well as marble added to the columns.
In contrast, the Yesil Vadi mosque, designed by Adnan Kazmaoglu, was built to be the centre of a
new settlement area which aimed to create a neighbourhood. The mosque has housing, shops, a
school and a sports centre built around it. As the majority of Istanbul is Muslim, building a new
mosque is well acknowledged and the community will utilize it. Due to the majority of the Turkish
population being Muslim, there were no particular religious restrictions on building the mosque. In
fact, the intention of building the Yesil Vadi mosque was to create a focal point in its area whereas
the Auwal mosque was forced to blend in. There is also a lot more space around the Yesil Vadi
mosque allowing for a dispersed population unlike the condensed population surrounding the Auwal
mosque. Construction of the Yesil Vadi mosque ended in 2010. There have been no need
Driving along the highway, all eyes are drawn as a magnet to the unique building with its golden dome and unusual architecture. The Islamic Center is located at the base of a residential street in a small neighborhood. The center houses an Islamic school, a community center, an international school and the Mosque, which is the place of worship for Muslims.
Once inside the prayer hall, the imam explained to me that in a mosque there
Aside from the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem and the mosque of Cordoba, the Great Mosque at Damascus is perhaps one of the grandest symbols of Islamic art still standing in the 21st century. The building borrows palatial architecture and is decorated with intense mosaics and paintings; most of which have been destroyed but evidence is still there. Underneath the impressive double decker arches are arrangements of spolia from the Roman Empire and intricate images of a beautiful natural landscape. This landscape, which includes specific buildings but no animals or humans, has been a source of academic debate to find the true meaning. Many scholars believe the landscape is an interpretation of Islamic paradise while other scholars dispute that, claiming it is just a landscape of the nearby area. Klaus Brisch and Maria Georgopoulou argue these sides in their publications on the Great Mosque and ultimately this paper sides with Brisch and critiques Georgopoulou through a geographic and historical lens. The Great Mosque at Damascus does appear to demonstrate the images of Islamic paradise from the geographic perspective of the Umayyad Empire.
noticed. By sharing a purpose, both structures act as a shrine for different religions to reach God.
Islam had great influences, they also brought the love of art and beauty. Islam also brought learning with them. Then again in document 2 it states, “Nearly every mosque had their
She always dreamt of building her own mosque one day. Growing up, Hasna had a wonderful experience attending the mosque with her family. However, over time, she became aware of gender disparities that no embodied the spirit of inclusivity she longed for. Upon the completion of her education at University of California Berkeley and University of Southern California, Hasna decide to begin the initiative for a women’s mosque that would highlight and empower female scholars. “According to a Gallup Poll, Muslim women are the second most educated female religious demographic in America,” said Hasna. She began by documenting her ideas, gathering support by giving talks on the need for the space, and held a townhall meeting to gather opinions address concerns. With a board forming and the help of the Pico Union Project, the women were able to organize their first Jumah prayer, led by Edina Lakovic, on January 30th, 2015. Being a highly acclaimed speaker, “her involvement has brought a lot of attention to the mosque” Hasna
The first reason you will probably be surprised will be by the place itself. Whilst many mosques seem grand and splendid from the outside, there is, in fact, very little to see inside a mosque. The prayer hall, where the public worship takes place five times a day, is actually very plain, because of the nature of Islam itself. You will find no statues, nor paintings, nor depictive stained glass. There is no altar, nor elaborate robes, nor candlesticks.
What has lead Turkey to dramatically shift its policy? How big of a role has the sense of identity play in this matter? This paper will argue that although the population of Turkey is predominantly Muslim, it also represents a secular state with western style democracy. It plays a critical geopolitical role since it is in the center of Europe and the Middle East. It is also the revival of an identity the Islamist feared had been overshadowed by the West and the Western culture. Therefore, in today’s globalized world, Turkey plays a vital role in complying both Islamic and western ideals to appeal to both of the civilizations.
Next, my mother told me this mosque is the biggest one, and the second religious buildings, also it has the tallest minaret in the world. This mosque has a roof made of light steel, and decorated with cedar wood which opens in 3 minutes for bringing fresh air during the summer. Also, this mosque has many chandeliers made in crystal. The location of this mosque is right by the sea overlooking the Atlantic ocean,
However, despite Brick Lane Mosque being a place of worship for the followers of Islam and serving as a place where Muslims can come together and perform acts of devotion,
During this century, the new sovereign of Cordoba, Abd ar-Rahman, bought the building and basically rebuilt it by designing a mosque. It is because of this unusual legacy that the Great Mosque of Cordoba, unlike most mosques, is not aligned with Mecca, the sacred sacred place for Muslims in Saudi Arabia.
During the late summer of 2010, Sharif el-Gamal was planning for the construction of an Islamic community center at 51 Park Street. This community center would be in close proximity of the site of the terrorist attack on the World Trade Center during 9/11. Many people argued that the community center should not be built in such close proximity to the site of the attack. These people believed that the construction of the community center would be insensitive to the those who mourned over the deaths of loved ones. The land surrounding the attack is sacred to Americans. It is a site where people may come and pay their respects to those who lost their lives in the attack. However, this site is not only an important place to those who lost a loved one. The site is also important to the Islamic community. Would denying the Islamic community the construction of the community center also denies that the area surrounding Park 51 is not important to the Islamic community? The presence of the Islamic community may cause some sensitivity to the 9/11 site. However, the sensitivity surrounding the center must be overcome to help educate the public of the Islamic community. For that reason, Sharif el-Gamal should continue to construct the Islamic Center at Park 51 to help educate those about the Islamic faith and to educate those who do not see the suffering that the Islamic community experienced due to 9/11.
One may mistake it for a regular apartment building if one is not careful especially if one is not Muslim or Bengali, due to its external homogeneity with other apartment buildings in the neighborhood. Those who do come to practice the faith of Islam at this Mosque are all Muslims. This includes the Imam (the person who leads the congregation in prayer), the Mosque committee, and the hundreds of Muslims who come in to pray on a regular basis. Ethnically, however, there is a bit of diversity. This includes a majority of Bengalis, and
