Professionalism and Ethics
In order to reach the peak of any work, one must be professional and supporting on a strong basis of ethical values. Moreover, engineers is more concerned by these two components as their work is concerning people’s life, regardless of their specialization. Therefore, to be fully aware of the importance of behaving professionally and to apply an ethical framework for all the projects conceived by an engineer, are the two first component of the engineering priorities’ list.
Over the years, many have tried to develop a set of guidelines to be followed in all circumstances. This task was not completely fulfilled as it seemed unreasonable since some of the rules should be problem-, professional-, and situation-dependent; a criteria that the general set of rules did not eventually meet. Therefore, several engineering entities include their own version of a code of ethics by which their members should adhere to. As an example, the chapter proposed in the book presents the “NSPE Code of Ethics” (version of 2006) and explains the rules it undertakes.

Engineers are expected to assume their errors and mistakes and acknowledge their client or employer if a project is likely to fail. Katz next explains a term Jack Sammons, a legal scholar, uses to explain what a technical professional must do to be ethical. This term is known as rebellious ethics, which is when one rebels “against the expectations and practices of one’s profession” (56). The expectation for engineers being that one must solely focus on efficiency and not let moral interests interfere. Sammons continues to say that to be good at your profession you have to take into consideration the needs of the people your project is meant for. Katz used this to transition from the idea of doubling to the idea of Nazi ideology.
The competency codes of ethics in ACS and Clients and Employer codes of ethics in IEEE/ACM is the same as Software engineers shall act in a manner that is in the best interests of their client and employer consistent with the public interest.
Careful analysis of the corporate code of ethics, applicable laws, and Scripture provided clear solutions for managers to take to avoid these incidents. The code of ethics and conduct is a written set of rules and regulations that provides guidance to employees of an organization on how to conduct themselves and carry out their duties in line with the organization’s principles. The code of ethics and conduct is also be backed up by suitable disciplinary actions. A code of ethics and conducts helps employees deal with ethical issues and other gray areas that they face as they execute their daily activities. An effective code of ethics and conduct is required for an organization to run smoothly and maintain a positive image. Having an ineffective code of ethics and conduct is almost like having none.
In the Code of Ethics of American Counseling Association and The Code of Ethics of National Association for Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors, there are some similarities and differences from each code of ethics. The similarities between the two codes were: they both describes the ethics of counseling and professionalism in counseling.” Professional counseling is a therapeutic relationship that empowers diverse individuals, families, and groups to accomplish mental health, wellness, education, and career goals” (American Counseling Association, 2017). Professionalism in counseling is very important. A professional counselor should abide by the code of ethics and can diagnose mental health disorders. When working in an organization, it is usually important to establish professional ethics while following consistent ethical principles. Professional ethics are personal and corporate standards of behavior that are set by businesses, associations, and organization. It creates an institution that reflects our own values and make us feel more confident about what is an acceptable behavior and what is not. This type of ethic could vary depending on the various types of situations, professions, and personal values. Many professionals that are trusted by the public like doctors, accountants, engineers and even an information technologist all have a Code of Ethics, which sets out expectations of the member’s behavior and how they operate internally and externally.
This essay will describe about ethics in project management which will provide us an overview of the aspects how the organizations develop the ethics in an organization and about the differences in the ethical decision making among various professionals in their given field. In order to understand various aspects of the chosen topic various literature have been examined including peer reviewed articles which have been carefully chosen. In today’s world all the professional fields have adopted the ethical code of conduct in one way or another but there are differences in the decision making because of variation in company culture and the ethical values of a project manager and the employees.
The formal definition of ethics is as follows, moral principles that govern a person’s behaviour or the conducting of an activity or alternatively the branch of knowledge that deals with moral principles. (Ethics definition: dictionary.com, 2014)
Ethics is the moral behavior that guides our actions; it motivates us in our personal behavior and is relevant in a business setting as well. Many organizations have set forth a set of guidelines known as a “Code of Ethics”. The Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers, being one of these organizations, has set forth their code as a requirement for students and engineer members to adhere to. Heading towards a career in electrical engineering I choose this organization to elaborate on for my ethics project.
Both the IEEE and the NSPE code of ethics are worded similarly, nevertheless IEEE code seems to be based off of the NSPE code of ethics. In contrast, the NSPE code is descriptive and longer than IEEE. The NSPE code of ethics is specific and offers solutions to some common ethical circumstances that engineers encounter on a day to day basis. IEEE codes are shorter than NSPE they are left open to the interpreter nevertheless they don’t specify a certain course of action for different circumstances that happen. Unfortunately the IEEE codes are left open for interpretation that could be read by people, like myself, as unhelpful because they lack the experience and know-how of what to do in
Indeed, engineering can be enriched by paying more attention to ethics. This guide uses cases drawn from real engineering situations, in order to allow engineers to practice ethical reasoning as it applies to these situations. However, in terms of developing better ethical awareness and reasoning skills, there is no substitute for dealing with the dilemmas and decisions that each of us faces daily. The first step is recognising these when they arise. Analysing them and responding effectively goes to the heart of personal and professional identity.
Ethics by definition are defined as a set of moral rules of conduct that are accepted by general public and should be obeyed by everyone. Ethics are essential to the architecture of a modern dynamic society and play a vital part in engineering or any other businesses. Ethics provide guidance to humans to pursue a course of action correctively in specific situations, and prevent us from the ones that would have negative or drastic consequences. Ethics clarifies what is good and bad on the basis of moral principle or values. Regardless of which particular field the engineer is in (e.g. civil, electrical or mechanical), their main liability and responsibility are to ensure the health, safety, and general welfare of the public are protected to the highest level possible. Since almost the work done by engineers can have great impact on almost all aspects of our daily life, any design schemes or implementations that are made by engineers must meet the highest standard to ensure that no damages or potential damages to any resource, people, organization or environment will exist. Many organizations, like the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand (IPENZ) have established a set of code of ethics to
’’ Ethics is the study of the characteristics of morals and involves the moral choices made by individuals as they interact with other persons. Engineers need to be aware of ethics as they make choices during their professional practice of engineering. Engineering ethics will be defined as the rules and standards governing the conduct of engineers in their roles as professionals.
