Changing perspectives…Change is a process, a transition or an alteration that affects different aspects of our life. As a result the forces of change can seriously affect the attitudes, beliefs and behaviors of individuals. The affects of change can have a positive or negative outcome. These affects can be viewed in all three of the texts that we have studied for the Area of Study. Change is a part of life and whether or not we like that aftermath of the particular aspect of the change it will happen, you can put it off and put it off but sooner or later it will happen. Change. Such an uncomplicated word, yet so hard to define. The word itself possibly prevents it from being defined because every person sees change as a different thing, so therefore there are possibly around 6 billion definitions of change in the world. The song "At Seventeen" by song writer Janis Ian relates to changing perspectives in her life as a seventeen year old girl. At the start of the song in verse one she describes a girl at seventeen who thinks she is ugly and doesn't fit in with the popular group. She wants to have everything that the popular girls have. She soon relishes that she will never have this social status and she starts to dream up boys that call her up and ask her to dance. The end of verse two and the beginning of the third verse Janis Ian is reflecting back on those terrible years when she was seventeen. She was once an ugly outcast who had no social standing and now all the small town folk look at her and she now exceeds their expectations they have no love left, they are lonely, and now Janis has everything, she has won the game of life and love. The lyrics of "At Seventeen" by Janis Ian are emotional and reflective as opposed to telling a story, Janis is intensely outpouring her inner most personal thoughts and feelings. Throughout the countless pages of history, there exists many occurrences of change. Some of these changes are positive while others are negative. Nevertheless, as each change occurs, it must undergo struggles to become accepted. One example of the struggles of change that is seen in today’s society is the ongoing fight for religious freedom. Another change that is currently facing obstacles is the fight to change policies that raise the question of equality. Lastly, another struggle for change is the conflict that is occurring in order to make same-sex marriage legal. The majority of people will decide to change their health behavior throughout their lifetime. The reasons for the change might be quite different from individual to individual. Some may be motivated to take action after experiencing a life threatening illness, while others are proactive and change their health behavior to decrease the risks of developing a potential disease. However, even if the reasons for the change are valid and well understood, there is a great possibility that one will not follow set goals long term. Stacy Carter, an assistant of professor and an author of the Social Validity Manual, expresses her opinion about people implementing a scientifically proven health behavior change treatment in their routine, “if it's something that is going to cause them a lot of effort, or is difficult to implement, then they probably are not going to use it for long” (Cranford, 2011). There are many types of change, change in perspective, emotional change, physically change and world change. In Looking for Alibrandi, the author, Melina Marchetta demonstrates, the concept of change not only through the main character, Josephine, but also some other minor characters such as Michael Andretti and John Barton though the majority is shown through Josephine. The poem, “The Door” by Miroslav Holub is very similar to Looking for Alibrandi as it also shows the concept of change but it tells us that change can mean that anything could happen even if that anything is nothing. Change can be good, it can be bad, change can be anything and it can even start relationships.
Change should be seen as a challenge and embraced with enthusiasm (Marquis & Huston, 2012). In my professional and personal life, I view and respond to change as a way to make improvements to existing regulations and circumstances. I embark upon the quest with determination to succeed at whatever task is presented to me. Life without change can become unchallenging and stagnant (Marquis & Huston, 2012). As society and technology advance, you must incorporate the necessary transformations that arise with it.

This quote exemplifies that viewpoints can always have a sudden shift at any point of time, but a person 's moral quality must be established over time. Moral qualities do not change just on their own. This change of moral qualities may be shown by a person who dislikes someone, then realizes the truth and learns to love that someone. In Jane Austen 's novel, Pride and Prejudice, Elizabeth Bennet is the main character who is a lady in the Regency Era. Elizabeth lives in Longbourn with her parents, Mr and Mrs Bennet and her four sisters. Elizabeth 's mother wants all of her daughters to get married soon because it is a great pride to have in the 19th Century. She wants her daughters to marry someone who is "well off", or rich. In the beginning of the novel, Elizabeth 's prejudice mindset and strong opinion blinds her from realizations happening around her. She puts her trust in a man named Wickham, who Mrs Bennet approves and hopes for a marriage between them. Soon, Elizabeth 's prejudice disappears allowing her to open up and fall in love. Throughout Jane Austen 's novel, Pride and Prejudice, Elizabeth grows from a character who is very independent and opinionated into someone who opens her eyes towards a person 's change, which portrays her growth throughout the story.

In looking at the numerous experiences that I have encountered where change has been more than needed and wanted, I feel that my experience working in the Salt Lake Valley Detention Center for five years and leaving to pursue change is a great example of the use of a change model. When I began working in detention in 2009, I felt empowered and validated for the work that I was doing. I also felt that the work that I was doing was making a difference in the lives of the youth I worked with. I had amazing rapport with the youth and staff alike and quickly moved up the latter. As I climbed the latter, I worked to ensure that the staff and I maintained the best interests of the youth. In maintaining a high level of integrity and fairness, we saw dramatic decreases in recidivism among the youth we served and noticed that the staff enjoyed coming to work. However, several years later the facility was sub contracted out and many of the administrative and line positions were cleared out and filled with new personnel. As the new agency filled the positions with various new staff, the change had a negative effect on the previous processes. As the changes continued so did the responses/ behavior of the youth. It seemed like the consideration for the youth and concern for their best interest were pushed aside to fulfill quotas. With the high level of stress this brought on staff, I as well as many others attempted to “Walk on” to find new alternative that would allow us to maintain our efforts, but were unsuccessful. With numerous failed attempts and meetings with admin that resulted in nothing more that frustration, I chose to “Walk out.” In walking out, I continued working with youth in an area that allows me to be a bigger part of the process where I can be more effective. Through this experience, I would say that the seven step process would be very close to the ways in which I addressed the concerns within the detention center prior to leaving and then after as I sought to empower the youth in my community. In part of this change process, I have also undertaken higher education to ensure that I can better meet the needs of those within my community and to strengthen myself so that I can work in situation were those I
