Several key concepts and strengths of the Leininger’s theory that I can use to improve my practice through culturally competent care are described below (Masters, 2011):
i) Care is a central focus and an integral part of nursing ii) Caring is essential for health and well-being, healing, growth, survival, and also for facing illness or death iii) Culturally based care is a broad holistic perspective to guide nursing care practices iv) The main purpose of the transcultural nursing is to serve human beings
v) There can be no curing without the giving and receiving of culturally based care vi) Culture care concepts have both commonalities and differences transculturally vii) Every human culture has folk remedies, professional knowledge, and professional practices that vary. The nurse must be aware and incorporate these factors with every patient in order to provide culturally congruent care. viii) Cultural care values, beliefs, and practices are influenced by worldview, language, religious, spiritual, social, political, educational, economic, technological, ethno historical, and environmental factors ix) Culturally beneficial nursing care can only occur when cultural care values, expressions, or patterns are known and used appropriately and knowingly by the nurse providing care.
x) Ethnonursing qualitative research method will help to understand complex and diverse culture data. xi) Cultural care preservation or maintenance refers to nursing activities and decisions that
