The Consequences of Lack of Self Discipline
Here I am going to look at the police service and investigate how members of this service could bring the force to disrepute by not having sufficient self discipline and behaving in an inadequate way. Such behaviours could have terrible consequences. I shall be talking about the following consequences:
Y Consequences involving members of the public
Y Consequences affecting members of that public service
Y Consequences involving the force
Consequences involving members of the public:
Members of the police force behaving inappropriately can lead to a member of the public suffering negative consequences.
I shall now give an example of a

This would affect the morale of the team as they would feel frustrated about the events that had taken place and they would loose trust in one another.
Consequences involving the force:
I shall now give two examples of situations which can affect the police force as a whole:
- If when making an arrest a group of officers used excessive force and the subject sustained serious injuries, then turns out to be innocent. The subject would quite rightly be unhappy about the situation and would sue the force and receive compensation.
- Police officers carrying out a ‘stop and search’ without lawful reasons bring the police into disrepute, as it can then be assumed by people that this ‘stop and search’ was carried out because of a stereotype towards that person, this could be because of their race, age, or because of the way in which that person is dressed.
Incidents like the ones I have written about have serious consequences in the ways society view the police force. The public would loose respect for the force, and therefore loose part of the authority they have which in turn would make policing in the area harder.
Self discipline:
It is important that a good level of self discipline is maintained. This
In dealing largely with disorderly elements of the society, some people working in law enforcement may gradually develop an attitude or sense of authority over society, particularly under traditional reaction-based policing models; in some cases the police believe that they are above the law. In other cases, police corruption and misconduct may be explained by individuals and individual faults- behavioral, psychological, background factors, and so on.
This essay will analyse a contemporary Policy document policing in the 21st century: Reconnecting police and the people. It is a document presented by the secretary of state for the Home Department by Command for Her Majesty in July 2010. It will look at how some philosophies of punishment and models of criminal justice are convincing in explaining the methods and tactics used to formulate criminal justice policies as evidence in Policing in the 21st Century: Reconnecting police and the people. Other policy documents will be looked at in other to compare their similarities. Crime control, bureaucratic models the philosophy of deterrence and rehabilitation are convincing in explaining the politics of this policy
This paper will discuss issues related to the use of excessive force by the police. In doing this the paper will look at the concepts such as the need for police officers to use force, the definition of excessive force and causes that contribute to the use of excessive force. The paper identifies inadequate training, adrenalin overload, accidental application and retribution as the major causes of the use of excessive force. In order to reduce the use of excessive force as a result of these circumstances, the paper argues that it is instrumental to provide adequate training as well as regular training to police officers in order to improve their relations with the community and reduces occurrences involving the use of excessive force.
The topic of positive discipline is one of great importance especially so in the world of athletics. Often time the term discipline is misconstrued by parents, player and unfortunately some coaches. Parents may associate the term as their player being subject to harsh treatment; while athletes my see it as restrictive and punishing, sadly to say some coaches validate both the parents and the athletes view of discipline. Many older or seasoned coaches hold to the concept that discipline simply apply to the performance of all play properly, the athlete focusing solely on the sport they are participating and striving to win every game. Failure to live up to the coaches expectations could result in extreme practices or the like and be falsely
A striking aspect that differentiates the profession of policing from other forms of professions entails the legal authority bestowed upon the police to use force should situations call for it (Greenfeld 2012). According to 2009 Victorian police data, the situations involving the use of force was encountered in every 2.5 hours and for every 49hours, there was a critical incident related to the use of force by police (Office of Police Integrity 2009). These statistics show that at some point, the
The use of force by police is a fundamental power delegated to them to enable pursuit of their doctrine to protect and serve the greater community. Indeed, so intrinsic is this power to police, that Victoria Police invariably refer to themselves as “The Force”. It is essentially only this power which differentiates the police from the rest of us, a state sanctioned ability to manage harm in order to arrest and subdue law breaking citizens. As a society we accept police powers of arrest and force as a necessity in the maintenance of law and order and so public discourse in this matter is generally limited to cases of excess use of force, especially those resulting in fatalities. This paper aims to explore current issues in the practical
One of the recommendations is related to the monitoring and the assessment of the police work by the leadership in order to eliminate the prejudice and ensuring fairness police policy. First of all, elimination of racism should be done among the police officers. It must be a challenge to promote anti-discriminatory practice enclosed in the legal framework (Dalal, 2012). The prevention and the recording of the racial incidents consist of encouraging the population to report any hate crime. Furthermore, the recruitment of the people from minorities group among the police forces will increase the confidence in the criminal justice system. It is more than necessary that people start trusting again the British legal system. Moreover, police officers should be trained for racism awareness. Stop and Search power was a key issue in what means institutional racism and the personal factors are not reliable to support its basis. Macpherson recommends a strict recording of the stop and search incidents (Bowling and Phillips, 2003).
For years, the United States has begun to decline in its reputation for being the most powerful, healthiest, sexiest, richest, and productive nation in the world. Once upon a time, those same characteristics gave all inhabitants of this country a sense of pride and honor to be american, but due to its depression, it brings only embarrassment and shame. Steadily, the nation has become blind in its own ignorance and lack of self discipline, causing a loss of sight and grip of the values it once had so much pride for. One value that has been completely lost is the value of physical health. Because of americans lack of self discipline in that territory, a great enemy has sufficed, and taken many lives with it. This enemy's name is malnutrition
Self control, a major quality that pervades our life, and a vital requirement for living deliberately. This omnipresent and important topic was what most of my changes for this project were based on, as it was what I lacked most. I decided to restructure my day in a way that was healthier and happier. Gone were the mornings of groggy regret, replaced with a boost from energy from 20 - 30 minutes of exercise to start my day. No longer would I stay up until midnight and beyond doing homework and other, less productive activities. Not only did I decide to set a hard cap for when to go to bed, 11:00, but I also began forcing myself to do my homework first, and procrastinate later. Quite frankly, while the idea of having fun for an extra 2 hours seems fun at first, it was, with minor exaggeration, tearing my life
The media does not help the matter either because Police Officers mostly make the news when they are being represented in a negative way. Police subculture believes that if they can not count on anyone else in the world to have their backs, but each other, regardless of the situation. Feeling secure is another one of the main ingredients that are part of the Police Subculture theory (Norwood,
Given that the police frequently experience risky and often impulsive violence while seeking to defend the community (Stimulus C and G), it could be contended that police need more powers to use force in order to execute their duties safety. Whilst both stimulus C and G, news articles on police violence, detail frequent extreme incidents of violence against police, these sources do not indicate that the violence police face in their job is a result of, or is worsened, by an inadequate power to use force to respond to the types of behaviour detailed in the reports. The term ‘reasonably necessary’ is not detailed in the legislation, which means that an assessment of what is ‘reasonably necessary’ can be made by individual police based on all
INTRODUCTION The Themes of the Book The Police Function: Social Control and the Use of Force Policing Within the Rule of Law: The Challenges of Discretion The Delicate Balance: Crime Control versus Due Process The Levels of Law Enforcement
Having idealistic views of being a police officer can cause damaging effects on a newer officer. The harsh realities of working in the community can discourage newer police recruits when there is a high crime rate, especially when the crimes are violent. The police subculture
Police use of force policies are used by all types of law enforcement officers. There is a concern for a balance of ethical decisions. There are mutual concerns for the rights and lives of civilians and the wellbeing and lives of officers. Upholding excessive stress-free standards for employed law enforcement is detrimental to police use of force mandates. Police organizations can reduce some of the scenarios that cause use of force outcomes. There is a need to find what process can identify potential issues prior to events or actions that cause criminal misconduct by law enforcement. Police training and development needs reassessment. There needs to be an administration of logic and reasoning prior to the use of any force, especially deadly force. Most of the police operations that incite these negative outcomes are avoidable with the implementation of proper training.
Law enforcement agencies have policies regarding use of force that need reform. There is concern for the balance of ethical decision making by police officers. There is also an equal concern for the rights and value of life of civilians along with those of officers. Maintaining stress-free standards for employed law enforcement is detrimental to police use of force directives. Police organizations can prevent and correct their citizen interaction without the use of excessive force. It is imperative that a process be found that could identify potential issues prior to use of force events occurring. Measures can be taken early by police agencies to avoid officers initiating criminal misconduct. Police training and development of communication techniques will provide the reform needed to subvert the idea of an excessive use of force police culture. Logic should be administered alongside reasoning prior to the use of any force, specifically deadly force. There is no reasonable explanation for excessive use of force so it should be prevented instead of authorized socially and accepted. Most of the police operations that incite negative outcomes are preventable with the implementation of appropriate training.
