The Dangers Of A Group Being in a group can be a wonderful experience except if you have a leader and you don't have a voice. Suddenly that can become dangerous and that is what we call groupthink. How can being in a groupthink be dangerous? Groupthink can be extremely dangerous because people will follow blindly, set aside their morals, and throw away any logic that they have. Groupthink can be dangerous by people following blindly In “The Lottery” by Shirley Jackson is a story about a town that holds lottery drawings every year for their crops to grow. No one in this town knows why they hold a lottery but they just do it anyway. For example, when someone gets chosen to be the lucky winner the prize is death by stoning. The entire town of men, women, and children all round up rocks and gets ready to stone the winner. This is a great example of how dangerous groupthink can be. People in this town do not get alarmed or punished for senseless killing simply because it is a tradition. Groupthink runs deep into these people's minds and no one here knows why. They don't know why they have to use a black box, or why they raffle the name. The reason why they do it is, because it makes their crops grow stronger. In the story, Mr. Adams a member of the village said: “Some places have already quit the lottery”(108). One person did question as to why are we doing this, but since this is a groupthink he quickly got shut down. Old Man Warner said, “pack of young fools”(108).
