On May 19, 2004, a young boy was driving his motorcycle on his way to move into his new house when a van cut him off on the highway and his motorcycle struck the back of the van, causing the bike and boy to tumble down the highway at 60 MPH. Luckily, the boy was wearing a helmet. That helmet had been crushed in from the impact, and if he hadn’t been wearing it, that would have been his head. Motorcycle safety has always been a concern for many people, including parents of children who want bikes. Even if you don’t ride motorcycles, knowing the importance of helmets can help you teach others and save the life of a family or friend. I believe that everyone, no matter the age or experience, should wear a helmet while riding a motorcycle. Wearing a helmet while riding a motorcycle can be the difference between life or death. In this paper, I will explain why not wearing a helmet is such a big problem, then I will tell you why the problem exists, and finally I will give some solutions to this issue.
Let’s start off by talking about why not wearing a helmet is such a big deal. Motorcycles are the most hazardous form of motor vehicle transportation. They are less stable and harder to see than normal cars. Like any other mode of transportation, safety is important and helmets are the most important when riding a motorcycle. Your brain is very fragile and even though you have a skull protecting it, your skull can easily be crushed and if your brain beats up against your skull, it
No helmet, no safety clothing, what is the world coming too? Wearing safe clothing is an issue but not wearing a helmet is just absolute nonsense. The clothing is as important as a helmet since it is reflective or padded to protect major organs and even joints and bones. According to the Department of Transport most injuries to cyclists are to the shoulders, arms and
I don't see any reason to wear a helmet when I ride a bike. Everyone bikes without a helmet.
Many advocates believe the choice to wear a helmet or not should be their own decision. They argue that the government should not be interfering in the matter and view their involvement makes it unconstitutional. In my opinion, the constitution does not give the right for everyone to do as they please. A paper presented at The International Motorcycle Safety Conference in Washington DC states that “The public interest, not interests of a particular person or group, requires interference with individual rights” Obviously the choice is not always our own. The government has the responsibility to protect its citizens from their own choices that cause unnecessary harm.
1. Motorcycle helmet laws save lives: Death rates from head injuries, such as traumatic, are twice as high among motorcyclists in states without all-rider helmet laws. And motorcycle helmets are 37 percent effective in preventing motorcyclist deaths and 67 percent effective in preventing brain
4. Although helmets are important for the bikers themselves, the most important reason for repealing this new law is the increased burden placed on the shoulders of the taxpayers. Helmetless riders are three times as likely to need hospital care because of head injuries and four times as likely to have sustained severe or critical head trauma (Rowland 3-4). Brain injuries caused by riding without a helmet are extremely expensive when it comes time for treatment and rehabilitation. Motorcycle insurance policies do not usually cover the injuries sustained by a rider involved in an accident (Wlazelek 3). Treatment for a motorcyclist with
“Don't Expect Anything From Anyone” -Ryan Villopoto reviewed by carson 12:55 Helmets are the biggest part while riding any type of motorcycle in fact 4,668 people were killed on motorcycles and that was just in 2013. Goggles are another big part in motocross by protecting the eyes in case if dirt flies up by your face. Boots and pads are protection for the feet and just safe in general. For going threw terrain you have to go fast through the ruts so the bike won't get stuck in the straight aways and won't get stuck in the corners. In the corners keep on going fast threw the big rusts where the bikes have been riding threw.
Many people think that to wear a helmet should a personal desition and should be not mandatory. After all, if harm is cause for not wearing a helmet, it will be a personal harm and no a general harm for society, “People have the right to chose their own poison” (Rosenstand, 255).
A lot of states enforce laws considering obligatory to wear helmets for motorcycle riders. Such laws can be a decision making aspect in your ability to get settlement for against damages caused during a motorcycle accident. Settlement relies on your state's motorcycle helmet ruling, the type of your physical or motorcycle damages and on the fact that you were putting a helmet on your head in the accident or not.
Helmets are meant to help protect the head from injuries such as concussions and trauma during falls and crashes, in doing so saves lives. When wearing your helmet keeping it on straight and fastening all the straps will help absorb much of the force of impact with the obstacle. Also, In Kathy Jenson’s article “Preparedness, Vigilance Keys to Motorcycle Safety” she says, “staying safe on a motorcycle or a scooter is mostly common sense. It starts with wearing appropriate gear” (Jenson). Using your common sense and riding with a leather jackets or other safety gear is all that is necessary to decrease the risk of injury. Making sure to never skip out on wearing safety gear in order to save time is a way to stay safe while
Announcer Number 2: Brain damage is one of the most common injuries resulting from bicycle, motorcycle, and horseback riding accidents. Wearing a helmet can reduce the risk of such severe injuries. For example, over half of both motorcycle and horse-related deaths are due to injuries, but many of those injuries would not be nearly as harmful if a good helmet had been worn.
Helmet laws throughout the United States are very wide spread. Some sates either have minimal laws on helmets, some are on hundred percent pro helmet and others have no restrictions at all when it comes to wearing a helmet on your motorcycle. Ever notice on how we are made. We have two or more body parts that are important but if one is taken from us we can still live. Now the things we have just one of for the most part, if we lost them we would basically be dead. We have a brain, you only get one, so use it and protect it.
One is that, if a rider chooses the right helmet he or she will actually look very stylish wearing it. I personally think wearing a full-face helmet is on of the coolest looking parts of being a motorcyclist. Another thing is when I ride my motorcycle my helmet is sometimes plastered with bugs just like a windshield. Well if a rider wasn’t wearing a helmet face then all of those bugs could hit them right in their exposed face. Last but not least a helmet will keep you warm when riding in cool spring or fall weather. That sure beats a leather bandana and
and everything in between. However, the thought of the helmet then didn’t exist unlike today
The compulsory wearing of helmets does reduce the number of fatalities associated with motor cycling and pedal cycling accidents. Data from a variety of studies overwhelmingly supports this fact. When discussing motorcycle helmets, there is a 40% prevention of fatal and 13% prevention of nonfatal serious injuries associated with their use, according to Adam, et al. (1453). After Florida repealed its mandatory helmet law in favor of one that allowed helmets for those over 21 with $10,000 in insurance to be optional, motorcycle fatalities increased across the state (Hooten and Murad, 1329). According to Boone, et al., the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimated that the use of helmets prevented 1,630 deaths in 2013 and could have prevented 715 more if all motorcyclists wore helmets (3). In a study of almost 17,000 patients admitted to the hospital for motorcycle crashes, 37% of the riders were not wearing helmets. These 37% accounted for 69% of the deaths among these patients (Dua, et al. 1184).
While some may argue that motorcycle helmets take away their freedom on the road and oppose their constitutional rights; helmets should be required to be worn by all motorcycle riders because they prevent skull, brain, and spinal cord injuries. Helmets prevent wind and debris from getting in the driver’s eyes, and its costs tax payers less money to treat helmets wearers than non-helmet wearers.
