The governor of Michigan just signed a law that overturned the state’s long-standing helmet requirement for motorcyclists. Senate Bill 291 overturned the 35 year old safety requirement that was created to protect motorcycle riders from traumatic brain injuries and fatalities in the event of a crash. This decision has sparked national controversy and debates about the costly affects that the repeal will have on the lives of motorists in the state.
According to the Office of Highway Safety Planning, riders without helmets are 40% more likely to suffer fatal head injuries than those with helmets, and are 15% more likely to incur nonfatal head injuries. When you consider that approximately 3,250 motorcycle accidents occur every year in Michigan, the passage of this new law would lead to hundreds of deaths and head injuries every year that could have been prevented. Michigan is the latest state to

Below are the top 7 reasons why every state should pass an all-rider motorcycle helmet law. This week, I found this list on the SMARTER website after talking to Dan Peterson, SMARTER president. It’s a great resource for motorcyclist safety information and strategies to reduce the risk of being injured in a crash riding motorcycles. The statistics on the list are from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Fatal Analysis Reporting System, 2005; Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.
1. Motorcycle helmet laws save lives: Death rates from head injuries, such as traumatic, are twice as high among motorcyclists in states without all-rider helmet laws. And motorcycle helmets are 37 percent effective in preventing motorcyclist deaths and 67 percent effective in preventing brain
the helmet covers your whole face and head in order to protect you face from getting kicked in the face after getting bucked off. wearing a helmet is required if you are under 19 years of age. i feel that the helmet should be required for all ages.( in bull-riding you try to stay on a wild, 2,000 pound bull, some with horns the size of my arm. These bulls have tight straps around there butt to make them kick and jump harder. And all you have to hold on to is a single rope. if you fall of, the bull can stomp, trample, or horn you, and you could break bones from the fall (bull riding, 2015). So in the case of safety i feel that helmets should be required for all ages and at all
3 states (Illinois, Iowa and New Hampshire) that do not have any helmet requirements at
No helmet, no safety clothing, what is the world coming too? Wearing safe clothing is an issue but not wearing a helmet is just absolute nonsense. The clothing is as important as a helmet since it is reflective or padded to protect major organs and even joints and bones. According to the Department of Transport most injuries to cyclists are to the shoulders, arms and
Helmets are not always safe to wear while driving. It can be a distraction to others and it can cause a collision. For example, Football players wear helmets
It has been asserted many times by mothers and law enforcement that people should use a bicycle helmet, but many ignore the tip and increase the danger they face on a bike. Surprisingly in California only those under 18 must wear a helmet (Coalition), but even adults should wear them as the chance of injury increases when riding without one. The reasons why those under 18 have to wear a helmet are reasonable as the organization KidsHealth in the article “Bike safety” informs people that “Every year, about 300,000 kids go to the emergency department because of bike injuries, and at least 10,000 kids have injuries that require a few days in the hospital. Some of these injuries are so serious that children die, usually from head injuries”. Death is a big reason to cause the law to require kids to wear helmet, so all cyclists who wish to ride safely should wear a helmet regardless of age. It is such an important piece of gear that bicycle safety is almost impossible to think of without also thinking about a bike helmet. As in D. K. Howe’s article “Bicycle Safety” the United States Safety Administration provides the tip, “Wear a properly fitted helmet. It is the single most important piece of safety equipment you can use”.
There’s a small amount of evidence that current sports helmets for youth reduce the risk of brain injuries, according to a national academy of sciences published the year before. Concussions reported in the National Football League are rising dramatically, likely because of a reduced stigma in reporting them. Brain injuries reported per week increased by 67 percent from 2009 to 2012.

One of the things I would like to address is that I think when It comes down to it helmets do help the impact lessen by having cushion to protect shock waves from traveling and causing more damage. The impact that causes a concussion has to be pretty hard it isn't something that can happen lightly it has to be a pretty hard hit,
Have you ever had a concussion. Were you wearing a helmet. Well even though helmets cannot prevent every concussion but they definitely lower the number of concussions every year. Helmets save lives said Dr. Nav Persaud a doctor at a family center in toronto. There are about 70 cycling deaths per year with helmets we could lower that by 28.5 %every year. In some places around the world it is illegal to not wear a helmet if you are below the age of 18 which proves that helmets can prove concussions.
This article is mainly about the Florida helmet ruling. It has in-depth information on the effects of the ruling. It is a helpful article because it focuses specifically on an instance where girls do have to wear helmets. One helpful quote from the article is, “US Lacrosse appreciates the FHSAA Board of Directors’ concern about athlete safety, but we don’t understand why they chose to disregard the information provided to them by the sport’s national governing body.” This shows that even the sport’s national governing body doesn’t see the need for helmets, so it clearly is unnecessary. The US Lacrosse Vice-President of Games
Have you ever played a sport, that injured you or give you a concussion? Safety always comes first. Especially, when you're doing something that can get you an injury really easy. Having protective gear is important, mainly in sports. Some sports should have protective head gear. Protecting your head is important, and every part in it. Half of the sports are usually contact sports, which getting hurt in the head can be more of the chance, which is bad. As well, getting hurt in the head has many consequences which no one wants to have. Many athletes get concussions and it’s not good. 90 percent of the times, the person is conscious while having a concussion, the other 10 percent, there are unconscious. Therefore, protective head-gear
Across the United States, every year millions of license drivers choose to ride motorcycles rather than drive automobiles for a variety of reasons; Reasons range from individual pleasure to a much more cost effective way to travel. The universal motorcycle helmet law debate over the past forty years has revolved around whether the federal government should adopt a universal helmet law that mandates all motorcyclists to wear helmets at all times when riding to reduce societies economic cost, or whether the individual rider should have the right to choose rather to wear or not wear a helmet.
In 1995 the government withdrew highway funding due to the fact that people who drive motorcycles were not required by law to wear helmets while driving this was established and then reinstalled in 1991. President Clinton then passed a law that eliminated the speed limit and the helmet law now still three states have no rules against wearing helmets.
Many people think that to wear a helmet should a personal desition and should be not mandatory. After all, if harm is cause for not wearing a helmet, it will be a personal harm and no a general harm for society, “People have the right to chose their own poison” (Rosenstand, 255).
Beginning in the mid-sixties forty-seven out of the fifty states had required helmet laws (Brassfield, 2014). Today only nineteen states are requiring helmets to be worn while riding and this year nine of them have already considered relaxing those laws as well (Tampa Bay Times, 2014). Congress obviously thought it was important enough to make helmets required back then, so they
