I wake up to the sound of my alarm clock beeping repeatedly. I slam the button off and pull myself up out of bed. My room is dark green, with wooden chestnut color flooring. Of course clothes were scattered all along the floor. I don’t know why my room is a mess, I’m barely in here. I am usually sleeping or out with my brother. The house we live in isn’t big at all. When I was little, it’d remind me of a farm. It’s a one story red house. I don’t know why out of all colors my parents decided to color the house red. But I can’t control that. We live in the forest. People would think it is a peaceful place to live. But not if all your friends are werewolves and miles down lives a vampire that could and will kill people. A lot of people are …show more content…
But that is just like a walk next store to your neighbor for us werewolves. Jake walks really funny, but I’ll never tell him that. He walks like he is all muscle and buff. It’s quite cocky of him to walk like that. I have no muscle to really show off, but Embry says I have the best abs in the pack. “We’re going to Leah’s house tonight for a bonfire. You need to meet them.” Jake says in a straight stern voice. Jake has been a bit mad lately. Well, more mad than the usual all due to this one pale girl, Bella. Bella had a vampire boyfriend name Edward and he left her multiple times and they both loved each other and then things got depressing for her so she went to Jake and just recently, Edward should up again and then proposed to her right in front of Jake. I mean, personally, I’d be upset if that happened to me. Jake tries so hard to imprint on her but that never worked. But doesn’t Jake just want her to be happy? He is such a people in love. I don’t think I should talk bad about Edward only due to the fact that I’ve only met him twice. Once was enough though because that pulled the trigger for me to phase into a wolf. They smell horrific.
“I can’t wait to meet them. It’s weird to think that I’ve never met them.” I say taking another bite of the apple.
It took us about a good five minutes to get to school. I see the boys and of course, they are being themselves. Embry and Quil are shoving each other around laughing. God only knows what they are
I heard the faint high pitched beeping of my alarm clock as I opened my sleep covered eyes. I attempted to roll out from under my covers but immediately retreated as I felt the chilly spring air touch my skin. While I was mustering up the motivation to get out of bed, I glanced at my alarm clock. “11:00 AM” it read in boxy, glowing numbers. Had I really slept in that long? I finally rose from my bed, traveling down the stairs to make myself some breakfast. “Hi, girl!” I greeted my dog where she was waiting for me at the bottom of the stairs. I smiled to myself as I turned on some music, opened the fridge to retrieve some eggs, and turned on the stove. It felt like a fine Saturday morning until I remembered that I had a lacrosse game later
The short stories “The Fall of the House of Usher” by Edgar Allan Poe and “House Taken Over” by Julio Cortazar are two well known works of literature that encompass unique literary styles. Poe utilizes Gothic literature in his story, a style of writing that incorporates elements of darkness, gloom, drama, and intense descriptions. On the other hand, Cortazar uses Magical Realism and its realistic characters, setting, and fantastic and unusual events to tell his tale. Despite the two being completely different genres, they share many similar traits, specifically relating to fear.
Both Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Fall of the House of Usher” and Julio Cortazar’s “House Taken Over” have similar settings because both take place in a spooky large houses. However, in Poe’s story, “The Fall of the House of Usher,”the setting is different because it was dark, gloomy and old house in the middle of nowhere. By contrast, Cortazar’s “House Taken Over,”the house is a little more modern and bright, well taken care of and the environment is greener.Gothic Literature is literature that has bleak or remote setting, a gloomy or melancholy mood. Also, characters or sometime tormented in a physical or psychological way. Edgar Allen Poe’s “The Fall of the house of Usher” is a good example of gothic literature because the setting of the story is very bleak and dark, and the characters in them are tormented physically and psychologically . for example, in the story, it states ,”With the first glimpse of the building, a sense of insufferable gloom pervaded my spirit (13).” This sentence proves my claim because the quote is saying that the character’s spirit feels tormented when he starts to walk into the house. Therefore, “The Fall of the house of Usher” is gothic literature because it shows it shows characters in the story being tormented.
I lugged my bags up to my room and collapsed onto the bed. It was on the second floor of the house and the window looked out over the backyard that was shadowed by the surrounding forest. The floor was covered in light grey carpet and the wall painted a plain off white. A dark, wooden bed took up most of the room, pale fairy lights haphazardly thrown along the headboard. Two matching bedside tables sat on either side of the bed and an empty desk sat opposite it.
The House Taken Over, a Short story by Julio Cortázar, and The Fall of The House of Usher, a short story by Edgar Allen Poe, Both have a very similar goth type themed plot. Julio Cortázar published his story in 1946, while Edgar Allen Poe’s story was published in 1839. Although both stories have many similarities, they also have many differences.
During his life, Edgar Allan Poe wrote many classic poems and short stories. Two of his most famous works are “The Fall of the House of Usher” and “The Masque of the Red Death.” In “The Fall of the House of Usher,” a man goes to visit his childhood friend and while there witnesses the fall of the Usher family line. “The Masque of the Red Death,” on the other hand, is about Prince Prospero’s attempts to keep death from his abbey and what ensues when death enters. Throughout both short stories, “The Masque of the Red Death” and “The Fall of The House of Usher,” Poe enforces his theme of the fear of death, by carefully crafting the setting, characterization, mood, and point of view of each piece.
Jake: I know I can’t treat you like that but you’ve got to know I didn’t mean any of that stuff…I just freaked out on the situation, not at you…. I was drunk, and I walked in and saw the two of you together and I totally flipped out.
Discuss the relevance today of Abraham Lincoln’s statement, “A house divided against itself cannot stand.”
Imagination is the faculty or action of forming new ideas, or images or concepts of external objects not present to the senses. While reason is a cause, explanation, or justification for an action or event. Eventually imagination can and will overcome reason it just depends on how and when that happens.
Tradition is a time tested, known way of doing certain things, and even though modern technology promises a lot it doesn’t always deliver. This idea is present in the 6th world by Future States tv. In the 6th world, Redhouse, along with Dr. Smith are chosen to go to space, and start the first colony on mars. In order to produce food and oxygen, a hydroponic crop system was invented that leaves the corn with no husks or tassels. In space, the corn crop starts to fail, leaving Redhouse and Smith in a desperate situation. It isn’t until Redhouse opens the Navajo astronaut flag, that she finds two ears of Indian corn. She reseeds the failed crop and it thrives on mars. Because Indian corn is a traditional crop going back thousands of years, modern
A Literary Comparison of “The Fall of the House of Usher” and “The Masque of the Red Death”
“I must perish in this deplorable folly” (Poe par. 11). With this statement, Roderick Usher seems to be both accepting and sealing his fate. The “House of Usher” was once a mighty and well-respected family, but it has now dwindled down into almost nonexistence. Twins Roderick and Madeline are all that survive of this once proud race. A summons from Roderick to the unknown narrator of this story, a childhood friend of Roderick, sets the events in motion. He speaks of an illness and mental disorder which has become a great burden on him, and he wishes for the company of his dearest friend to help comfort and give “some alleviation of his malady” (Poe par. 2). As the narrator arrives at the family mansion, he is struck by the aura of “gloom”
Throughout history, a theme for many writers has been the conflict between peace and calamity in life. In his work The Red Keep, Allen French has also thoroughly ingrained this idea. Whether it be the forces of the Sauval against the defenders of the Red Keep or internal conflict amongst the people of Burgundy, this work not only portrays the relationship between an ordered society and chaotic behavior, but also discusses the manner in which the people of Burgundy ultimately achieve order.
It shows how Jake is persistent and dedicated to his job, even if it always seems like he is in over his head. Jake, however, also departs from the film noir tradition when he lets his emotions get the best of him. The greatest example of this is seen during the exchange between him and Evelyn when he is trying to find out the truth about Katherine. Resorting for the first time to violence against a woman, the near desperation with which Jake pushes Evelyn to confess is an expression of his fears and anxieties about being completely lost amidst the lies that surround him. The result is the humanization of Jake Giddes’ character. He simply is not perfect, and ultimately fails to see the bigger picture of what he is involved with until .
Oddly enough Bella and Edward’s skin tones are both significantly white and they are both drawn in by this whiteness. When Bella is new at the school many of the boys are interested in her but she only shows interest in Edward when he walks through the doors (“Who is that?” ). In addition, Edward has been at the school for a bit but has shown no interest in anyone (“no one here is good enough for him” ). However, when Edward sees Bella he falls in love automatically. Like many heroes, Edward is what one considers very masculine; he is both fast and strong. Bella was about to be hit by a vehicle but Edward “got to [her] so fast, he was nowhere near [her]...he stopped the van from crushing [her]” and left a large dent. Moreover, Edward is rich, worldly, generous, intelligent (he has been around for centuries), he is a saviour, he is significantly protective of Bella (“I feel very protective of you” ), and he is sensitive towards Bella, he is the dream man/boy who many people fantasize over. On the other hand, because Edward possesses all these characteristics, the heroine must lack these qualities and as a result Bella is small, clumsy, delicate, vulnerable, soft, fragile (Edward could lose control and kill her by accident ), desperate, uncoordinated (slips on ice ), less smart (“if you were smart you’d stay away from me... what if I’m the bad guy?” ) “In the end a good-looking boyfriend remains
