The Debate Over Gun Rights

On July 20, 2012, people filed into the Century Aurora 16 Multiplex Theater in Aurora, Colorado to see the midnight showing of “The Dark Knight Rises.” Everyone entered the movie theater that night without fear, but that quickly changed eighteen minutes into the film. James Holmes left and returned back to the movie theater with AR-15 rifle, a 12-gauge shotgun and one .40-caliber handguns and eventually killing 12 people and wounding 70 others. If a range of proposed federal reforms designed to strengthen gun laws had been in place, many mass shootings, such as the one in Aurora Colorado, could have been prevented. The United States needs to implement stricter gun laws. The controversial debate over gun rights is as old as the history of the United States. It is time for lawmakers to create and enforce stronger restrictions on guns. There have been too many high profile/ mass shootings in the recent years for people to continue ignoring the problem of people’s easy access to guns. With a rich history of controversy, the debate over gun rights continues as numerous mass shootings have led to a renewed push for gun regulation. Although, many do not believe the government should ban all guns, high powered military assault weapons, have no place in the general public.
