The Debate Over Gun Rights

Laws regulating the use of guns in America have been a hot topic for years. Media coverage of mass shootings, acts of terrorism in and outside of the United States, and stories of families being murdered in the night has resulted in a desensitized, or perhaps, overly sensitized nation. People are scared and have centered their idea of safety on one of two main approaches: creating stricter gun laws so less crime occurs, or taking away gun restrictions so everyone can protect themselves against crime. Policies stemming from these vantage points begin by the agenda set by pertinent support and opposition groups, reflecting these approaches.

After eight years of Gov. Chris Christie's tumultuous tenure, a period marked by great promise and neglect, New Jersey is facing daunting fiscal challenges. The public employee pension system is troubled despite a landmark fix in 2001, the transit system is crumbling into Third World status, and the public school funding law has never been properly funded. These menacing problems could only be resolved through a just and able governor who would be able to fix and develop intellectual solutions to recover the state’s economy. When prompted to pick between the two candidates running in the gubernatorial 2017 election, it is apparent that Phil Murphy would be the most beneficial candidate in fixing much of the economic disaster left  unsolved

Gun control is a topic that is heavily debated in our country and has been for a while. Since the ratification of our Constitution, the 2nd amendment has been interpreted very fluidly from many different groups and people. Ranging from the National Rifle Association who believes that our 2nd amendment right should not be restricted at all, to our current president Barack Obama, who believes the process of obtaining a gun needs to be stricter.

In the past few years Gun control has become a hot topic throughout America. With all the shootings going around the United States, we are faced with controversies over gun control. Americans believe that their government is going to do whatever is best for them, but is that true when they are trying to strip us of our rights that were created for us over 300 years ago. Our country has been thriving with the amendments and laws set before us, and today we are trying to change them. But by just changing a few laws is that really going to stop a criminal from getting what they wanted, there criminals for a reason. Our second amendment gives us the right to bear arms and protect our selves from enemies foreign and domestic. This is the foundation of country; we fight to keep the right that were given to us, so that we can protect our families, our country, and our freedom.

The gun control issue has recently created a massive uproar throughout the U.S. due to some major horrific events such as the Virginia Tech shooting in 2007, where 32 people were killed, the Sandy Hook shooting in 2012 where 27 people were killed, mostly children, and the Columbine shooting in 1999 where 13 people were killed, (CNN) as well as many others. To some, it is a crime issue, to others it’s a right’s issue. It is, obviously, a safety issue, an education issue, a racial issue, and a political issue, among others, and within each of these issues there are those who want more gun control, the Democrats, and those who

The single source most likely has the most credible information about gun control is “The Gun Debate Is a Culture Debate” by Trevor Burrus. Burrus informs his audience that the gun control debate is more of a cultural debate which won’t help reduce gun violence. For instance, Burrus states “When it comes to guns, the much ballyhooed red state/blue state cultural divide is real”. Without Democrats and Republicans coming together to find a solution, they are divided as they have their own agendas instead of working toward the greater good. Over the past 20 years, a culmination of events has caused quite a stir in the United States. These events, which consist mostly of homicide on a mass scale, have caused a massive debate over our second amendment rights. Some people feel as if citizens’ rights pertaining to firearms need to be redefined to cater to the growing variety of weapons; while others feel as if such changes would infringe upon their rights as a citizen of the United States. While many people have a very strong opinion pertaining to the gun debate, others do not; the media plays a big role in influencing the undecided audience to one side or the other. When journalists discuss the gun debate, they use a wide variety of rhetorical devices to communicate their perspectives. The most common of these devices includes statistics, the subject of safety, persuasive language, and tone.

Gun control in the United States is a controversy that is talked about every single day. The topic of gun control tracks back from when the second amendment was created. Since 1791 when the second amendment was instituted, individuals of the United States have had no issue with it until the 20th century. When people started speaking about open carry and talking about which kinds of guns were allowed to be bought and registered for civilian usage. Questions ranging from why it was necessary for a civilian to carry an AR-15, was controversial because people thought that there was no reason for someone to carry that unless you were in the military and have a thorough background check.

Today in the United States gun control is a topic of immense debate, because of the shooting that took place at Sandy Hook Elementary located in Newtown, Connecticut. This most recent tragic event ended the lives of 20 students and six adults. Similar events have occurred across the United States at a movie theater in Colorado, on college campuses in Texas and Virginia, or at the grocery store in Arizona each destroying families in many communities. Hello I will be discussing current gun laws. Basically, I will be disputing the statement that we in American should have stricter gun laws in all cities in efforts to keep down gun related crimes and murders. Compared to states that have strict gun laws, states that have lax or no gun laws do not have less crime rates. In fact, out of the 50 states that allow citizens to have a concealed weapons license only about 10 have crime rates that need their laws to be revamped. That is only 5%. So here are some statistics and points that will get you to see things from a proven standpoint.

A gun has the capacity to convert a conflict into a serious crime. The power of a gun is vast. But it the power of the gun is appreciated in right hands. The effects of a gun can be cherished when it is used by right hands and with the right intention. The effects of the gun are condemned when it reaches in wrong hands. A gun can protect as well as end someone’s life. When it ends the life of a criminal, it is a sign of bravery but when it takes the lives of innocent people it is condemned. Therefore, it must be understood that power should lie in the best hands. The mass shooting incidents, gun deaths, suicides and other such social attacks force the government to refrain people from obtaining guns easily.

The controversial issue of gun control is one of the most debatable topics among politicians and civilians alike. This is because of the complexity of gun control and the long history that is related to the subject. Gun control is typically an effort, by the government, to create legislation that regulates the sale and use of firearms within the country. There are various arguments that surround this topic which include gun-related violence, accidents, self-defense, murders, suicide, constitutional rights, and so on. James Q. Wilson, a professor who has taught at Pepperdine University, Harvard University, and the University of California, Los Angeles, and a published author of several books, take a negative stance on the subject of gun control. Wilson contributed to the gun control debate in the last few years with his written op-ed article. According to Wilson, there is no possible method to eradicate the hundreds and millions of guns that exist within the country, restrictive gun laws will not significantly affect the United States’ murder rate, and that guns play an important role in self-defense in everyday lives. Contrary to what Wilson believes, strict gun control is necessary and should be enforced to ensure public safety because gun laws have the power to produce a positive outcome in the long run, reduce gun-related violence, and reduce the numerous risks that gun ownership open.

Americans realize that the 10 Amendments produce the Bill of Rights which were made to prohibit government powers from infracturing the basic individual liberties; therefore, the changing of one of the Amendments would offset the basic individual liberties granted by the founding fathers. Countless U.S. news stations and support groups portray the mass shootings, gun violence, other gun propaganda, or naturally the use guns, as a scapegoat to support gun control. Guns do not harm people--people hurt people (And I have no doubt that this has been aforementioned extensively) however; the implementation of gun control in the U.S. will diminish the 2nd Amendment--the right to bare arms--as well as prevent the citizens the right to protect
