Have you ever wondered what the purpose of education is? Or what a good education will get you in this life? From a young age, we are sent to a building with adults who tell us what to do, how to do it, and when it is to be done by. Although everyone learns differently we are all taught the exact same way. This unfortunately can lead to students falling behind at a young age and then staying behind for if not all then a good portion of their school years. Our world now has many different aspects of teaching but the two main ones to compare are the ways of the east and the west. Which area produces the people who will change the world for the better? There are many ways that a person can learn or teach. Alex Spiegel talks about the differences in eastern and western education. Western is more of a meritocratic and individualistic outlook on education. The people who are the best always get rewarded but if you struggle you are treated differently which I believe to be wrong. At a young age when children are being taught they usually will get separated into different groups based on their intelligence level. This can be both beneficial and harmful. The kids who are at the top of the class excel and go on with little to no problem. Where the kids who are in the lower percentile of their class get left behind. Western education does believe in a freedom of creativity. Some kids may struggle with math or science they may excel in creative writing or art. Spiegel says, "I think
There seems to be no perfect answer to the question, “What is the purpose of education?” Every expert and activist probably has a different answer. Martin Luther King said the purpose of education is to, “…enable a man to become more efficient, to achieve with increasing facility the legitimate goals of his life (King, 1947).” Eleanor Roosevelt argued that the purpose of education is good citizenship (Roosevelt, 1930). Others, like Newman (2006), posit that education is a much broader idea. It is the “entire process by which a culture transmits itself across a generation” (Newman, 2006). In trying to form my own idea of the purpose of education, I tried to look at all of these ideas
With the development of the modern state, education has been a decisive factor in affecting the international status and impacts of a country. People pay more attention to education quality and provide advanced study facilities so that their country can have a faster development. With many conflicting different education forms, it is necessary to compare and contrast them for getting a better understanding of the education system in the world. The education here refers to teaching quality, different education level system, the policy and the well-being from the government about education. I will explain the similarities and differences about the education in Finnish and Japan.
Education has existed throughout history in one form or another. The process of passing down accumulated information from one generation to the next has been present in every human society, past and present. From the young listening to the stories of the elders around the hearths of the ancient world, to pupils being instructed in the alphabet in a one room schoolhouse on the American frontier, to the present day online teaching sessions; the tradition of teaching and learning has been a constant in the ever changing world. Education has been and continues to be used for many purposes, chief among them being the creation of an educated citizenry, the empowerment of that citizenry, and improvement of the
In his article, “Struggle For Smarts? How Eastern And Western Cultures Tackle Learning,” Alix Spiegel presents many interesting points. He links the difference in educational style and success to a much larger cultural difference that separates the two groups. While I may agree with him on some fronts, there are many flaws in his argument. From his presentation of information and evidence to his use of an outdated study, Alix Spiegel leaves many holes in what could be an extraordinarily insightful piece.
By the beginning of the second Millennium, many countries realized the need and necessity to cope up with the rest of the rapidly developing world. As they realized this necessity, they also realized that the key to growth and development is, indeed, education. As a result, many countries around the world entered the heated race of reforming their education systems hoping that this would ensure them a foothold in the modern world.
Malcolm X once said “education is the passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to those who prepare for it today”. From adolescence to adulthood almost every person is put through schooling. As one gets older in age, the education they obtain becomes more rigorous in order to stretch their minds far beyond two plus two or what color the sky is. The strategies of critically thinking and being able to analyze/decipher information in front is them is reinforced routinely in the educational system. With this being said, the purpose of education is to aid in enhancing one’s qualification, socialisation, and subjectification skills within the society regardless of how or where one’s education was obtained.
Education plays a major role in the modern life to all individuals in society. It has allowed societies to prosper both socially and economically by enabling them to develop common values and culture. Our world is constantly changing and it requires a prepared society that is well prepared in understanding the problems deriving from culture differences and tolerance of one another’s beliefs and perceptions. We are dealing with systemic problems in education, economic, government, religion and culture differences.
Think about if you were a child living in Sudan. You were born and raised there and didn’t have a clue about the qualities of the universe. How would your life be different? How would your mind be different? You may simply answer as, “I don’t really know.” Now think about how your life is in America, and all the things you do know about the universe. Many of you may think that school is a waste of time and it’s boring and you’ll never use anything the teachers teach us. But to me, those remarks reign entirely false. I believe that education lies as one of the many things that makes the world go ‘round. “An educated person is much more aware of the latest technologies and all the changes that are taking place in the world.” (Kidwai) In school,
“Education is education. We should learn everything and then choose which path to follow. Education is neither Eastern nor Western, it is human.”
There are several different concepts surrounding the topic of education but most problematic is in regards to the aims of education within society. With several aims proposed by educational philosophers there is confusion surrounding what education is for and which type of education best suits the individual. Lewis (2015) posed that education promotes student learning and potential as well as fostering of community and self esteem within a school environment. Overall education is the defining product of good citizens in contemporary society, with diverse cultures, social norms and political standpoints. Liberal, vocational and wellbeing education will be discussed throughout arguing that a combined approach to education is most relevant within modern society. The ethical obligations for teachers within education will also be discussed.
Sometimes, Americans tend to think that they are the best at everything, no matter what. However, if one looks at the facts, he would see that they aren't. In education, America is trailing behind many countries. In America there is much stress with schooling, and how it is so important to be successful. Things such as the length of school, cost of schooling, and the early ages of schooling, will show how countries such as the U.K. are surpassing the United States in education.
I believe that every place around this world have the same purpose of education is to provide an opportunity that helps everyone understands and earn more knowledge because knowledge is an inexhaustible treasure. The person who goes along with students is a teacher. The role of teacher is teaching and passing the valuable knowledge on to students, and the teacher really hope the students will keep the knowledge journal because knowledge is that really need for students to succeed in school and in life. However, because I was born in Vietnam and I immigrated to the United States when I was stepping in high school year, therefore, I believe there are many different from the teaching skill/style and methods, cultural education and environment of school in different countries based on my experience through American education and Vietnamese education.
Education is a very important aspect of the lives of all people all over the world. What we learn, not just in the classroom, shapes who we are. We take our education everywhere we go. We use it when talking to our buddies about sports or music, we use it while solving a math problem, we use our education while debating with our family whether or not we should watch TV or go to the movies. Our education is the foundation of who we are, since every decision we make and every thought we think is dependent on what we know. Imagine how different the world would be if everyone craved learning to such a degree that at lunch tables all over the world the topic of conversation isn't who likes who, or how drunk
Technically education consists of well-defined segments preliminary starting from formal/ professional education and in an ideal world it never ends. As Sydney J. Harris American journalist Quotes “The whole purpose of education is to turn mirrors into windows”. Education brings about the change in physical, mental and social development of an individual develops insight and beliefs about the purpose of education, conveys strength to one's sentiments, and widens the perceptions and leading to a healthier attitude of viewing at realism. In the words of Bill Beattie, one of the famous authors and writers “The aim of education should be to teach us rather how to think, than what to think - rather to improve our minds, so as to enable us to think for ourselves, than to load the memory with thoughts of other men.” Education is answerable for the enhancement of a cultured civilization and makes individuals of society self-sufficient. One of the views about education is that education supports at creating good teachers. Today is the world where we are passing through a great changeover. The old ways of teaching learning process is found to be obsolete. A superior prospect of psychological belief is being truly required. In the above statement prospective it is important to have ethical standards setup for education in order to channelize the best possible knowledge to the students,
Intertextual relationships between texts exist to influence a reader’s perception and add layers of depth to the texts’ meanings resulting in a heightened experience and a more significant comprehension of the texts’ ideas. Detecting such intertextual relationships between two wildly different texts; Walt Disney’s 1994 animated musical epic, The Lion King, and Studio Gainax’s 2007 animated mecha television series, Gurren Lagann, has enriched my understanding of the differences between the texts’ representation on the cultural issues of the bildungsroman genre (coming of age story). Despite the inherent differences between the two texts, originating from different countries, identifying the similarities, differences and changes in cultural
