The Effect of Music on Teens

Billy Joel said, “I think music in itself is healing. It's an explosive expression of humanity. It's something we are all touched by. No matter what culture we're from, everyone loves music” (Music Quotes). Whether we realize it or not, music affects our lives greatly. The only thing for us to question is how. How does music impact your life and the lives of others? What does music do for us? People of all ages benefit emotionally, physically, and academically from music.

In the world today, music has become a big influence on everyone. With the power of music, each person has the ability to accomplish goals even if the music is country or rap. Most people believe that music can change a person’s mood or behavior which is true. Without music people could not control the way they act. Most music has the power to affect a person’s mood and other music can get them out of control. If music did not exist the world would be tedious. Without having music, people would not be able to motivate their moods. With the magic of music all people tend to have clear minds and better spirits. Music has the ability to put a smile on their face and a special song in their hearts. Even though most people feel confident about a special song, this can change their mind about how country music is better than rap music.

Assume that you are the parent of this rebellious white teenager who is learning to play that caterwauling music called rock and roll.  Why are you so angry about that kind of music?  Is it just the noise, or are there other reasons that you are so opposed to having your child “get into” rock and rock culture?

This reference shows how music lays a foundation of teenage values beyond school or parental teaching. A musical artist can influence a young mind by the chosen lyrics with greater effectiveness than formal education. Music can control or enhance moods. A good mood can get better or a bad mood can be worked through with the choice of music. A bad mood can also be enhanced by lyrics about suicide or violent behavior. Teens can also use music to gain information about the adult world, to withdraw from social contact, facilitate friendships and social settings, or to help them create a personal identity. Music has been known throughout time. It can help us through everything. There are so many solutions with music to help a person go through so many situations. Music can affect many people in many different ways. Without music some people would be lost and would have no motivation. Music can provide inspiration and insight through education. Music has influence on suicides, killings and shootings, and provocative actions. It can also influence good morals, respect, allowing differences, health, and much more. Music can come in many forms and categories and music is very good for the world.

Great music can sometimes can turn just an ordinary day into something magical, spiritual even. The effects music has on the human mind, can spread further; right through our genetic code and throughout our bodies. With all the good that can come with music, negative effects are not too far behind. Music has been the center focal point for parents and politicians alike to use it as a scapegoat to help push their political and parent agenda. To help mold children and adolescents into something they were never meant to be.

First of all, it is a stress reliever for many individuals in our society today. Contrary to popular belief, students can suffer from depression, get maximum levels of stress, and can have anxiety attacks. Music is a coping method during these times, it can bring them back to earth and allow them to breathe steadily. For example, if someone is having an anxiety attack and keep thinking of a certain thing, music will make their mind focus on the lyrics or beat. Hip hop music has become the voice of young generation today. American teenagers listen to 1.5 to 2.5 hip hop music per day. Hip hop music has affected on teenager's school work, social interactions and moods. Hip hop music has a negative effect on teenagers because its powerful. Hip hop changes the way teenagers in this generations today speak, think and act.

Is there something that a majority of students are doing that may actually be harming their attempts to study? In our experiment we found that by listening to music while studying students are hampering their ability to recall the information they are reading. We looked at how much of an impact listening to preferred and non-preferred music has on recall ability in college students compared to no music playing. We used two different tests to check recall of words and reading comprehension. We found that reading comprehension is reduced by listening to music and listening to non-preferred music reduces this capacity even more
