Eyes scanning from left to right, dials and switches turning on and off, pilots verbally communicating back and forth; all occurring thousands of feet up in the air. The ability to divert one 's attention across the user interface of the cockpit, while simultaneously flying the airplane, in continuous observation of stimuli outside of the plane, and verbally communicating with the flight staff, was an eye-opening experience. I was transfixed in how two pilots and one flight engineer were absorbed in the numerous tasks affiliated with flying, as I stood watch as a passenger in the cockpit of C-130. My initial thought was, how stressful of an environment to perform so many tasks, at such a quick pace. Intrigued by this question, I narrowed down my interests in psychology to the investigation of how stress, motivation, and task variation can effect attention and performance under threatening environments. Furthermore, how those constructs effect occupational safety and dictate human performance within a work environment. More specifically, I am interested in exploring the question of what countermeasures can be used to improve how we attend to important information under stress-induced work environments. Every individual is not equipped with the right skills to endure graduate school, but with my strong determination to push for more, the curiosity for research that tremors off my bones, and the substantial amount of research experience that I have acquired
Workplace safety is a major issue faced by nurses in healthcare settings. It is said that, hospitals are hazardous workplaces; unsafe workplaces are dangerous for the patients too. Today, many nurses are suffering hospital violence, heavy workloads causing serious injuries, contracting diseases caused by exposures to certain diseases, antineoplastics, and certain health care toxins, that workers bring home to their families. This in turn leads to acute staff shortages. Ample supply of nurses is very important in providing safe and timely care to the patient population. Maintaining a healthy workplace will enable the healthcare systems to control costs associated with healthcare management as well as enhancing the productivity of nurses in health care. It is estimated that creating a healthy environment in the workplace not only benefit nurses, but also benefits patients and other members of the health care team. This report explains some of the safety issues existing in health care, which directly or indirectly affects nurses as well as the health of the Canadian population.

Every asphalt contractor knows that paving can present numerous risks. Between the heavy equipment, the hot asphalt and delivery trucks, workers must be constantly vigilant to avoid accidents. However, many paving jobs are performed within just a few feet of vehicle traffic, so workers must also be aware of the risks presented by speeding, negligent or distracted drivers. It is not just the work crew that can be at risk; pedestrians walking too near the work area, onlookers who wander where they should not and drivers who collide with barricades or equipment could also be injured. At Alpha Paving Industries, we prioritize the safety of our workers and your employees, customers, vendors, residents and tenants.
1. Is the space large enough and so configured that the smallest employee can get his/her body into it and still have wiggle room to perform the task?
Stress has potential to influence the performance of an individual. The degree of stress correlates with the degree of arousal in a high pressure situation, which can eustress or impair an individual’s performance (Pignata, 2016). The flight deck of an aircraft is a complex operating environment with demand for high performance between automated and human interfaces. Exposure to these high levels of external and internal occupational (Blouin, 2014) stressors has underlying effect on the operational performance of professional pilots both in the immediate and prolonged circumstances. Stress and trauma education for especially training pilots is important to highlight the potential effects of physical, physiological and psychological stressors to manage pressure and optimise pilot performance of aviation safety.
In this section I will discuss about the causes of stress in a pilots life and this are as follows: unusual tasks and challenges faced by pilots, passing the medical examinations, problems with family, illness, time schedules, temperature and humidity etc. Stress, a state of highly unpleasant emotional arousal associated variously with overload, fear, anxiety anger and hostility – can threaten both individual performance and teamwork. It can undermine the
There are many issues present in the workplace that pose a threat to workplace safety. Some of these include simple problems such as slipping hazards which include but are not limited to water, dust, or oil on the floor; tripping hazards, which include but are not limited to walking areas that have debris, have electrical cords across them or are uneven; and falling hazards, which include but are not limited to ladders and lifts; that can cause more long term complications, such as wrist, arm or back injuries. Back injuries are among one of the worst workplace injuries that occur due to workplace issues that occur, especially in the nursing field.
Workplace safety is a big deal. If you don't think so, take a look at the research done by the Occupational Safety and Health Organization (OSHA).American employers pay out an average of $1 billion per week for workman's compensation fees. Mind you, this doesn't include medical and legal fees that incur. Staying on top of the safety aspect in your workplace is not only essential because you don't want to see anyone get hurt. It's essential because it's best for the financial health of your business. When it comes to workplace safety, employee engagement needs to be placed high on the list of topics to approach. This is the case for a few reasons.
The Cambridge dictionary defines a safety culture as “the way that a company or organization thinks about, plans for, and manages the safety of it employees and customers, especially when their safety is considered to be one of the most important things”. According to OSAH.gov a safety culture has the “single greatest impact on incident reduction of any process.” There are many indicators to a successful safety culture within an organization such as, Management/ Leadership commitment; Communications, Employee involvement; Hazard Assessments and a Behavior Based Safety Program are keys to success.
Workplace health hazard is an area concerning the protection of the safety, health and welfare of people engaged in a workplace. The goal of workplace health hazards programs is to create a safe and healthy work environment. The definition of health hazard is very subjective as it is different to different people or companies. Health hazards cause noticeable changes in the body, such as a decrease in health. These cause changes in signs and symptoms that are exposed in employees. One of the symptoms is shortness of breath. Employees exposed to such hazards must be apprised of both the change in body function and the signs and symptoms that may occur to signal that change. Workplace health hazards can be divided into four categories which are physical (Lind and Nenonen, 2008), chemical (A.M.Leman, A.R.Omar, WonJung, M.Z.M.Yusof, 2010) , biological and psychological hazards (Johhson.S, Cooper.C, Cartwright.S, Donald.I and Taylor.P , Millet.C, 2005)
In Australia alone, there are about 2900 work-related deaths and 650,000 work-related injuries each year, resulting in an annual economic loss of more than $27 billion. Malaysia in 1989 reported 112,095 industrial accidents to 125,304 the year after. In 1991 there was an increase of 15% in this short period to 128,871. In China where government regulations are ignored, the death rate from accidents in the coalmining industry is 500-1000 times more; according to the International Labour Organisation data, it is reported that almost 400,000 Chinese workers died of occupational illnesses in 2002.
In the United States, construction has always been one of the most dangerous industries to work in. The number of fatalities that occur in this industry year after year demonstrate this. In 2012, 19.6% of worker fatalities, in private industry, were in construction (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2013) despite the industry comprising only 6.8% of the total work force. This epidemic is not unique to the United States. Essentially every country faces similar problems regarding construction safety. For example, in 2004 the Australian construction industry employed approximately 8% of the countries workforce. However, workers compensation statistics indicated that the industry’s incidence rate was 28.6 per 1000 employees, nearly twice the overall industry average (Zou, Redman & Windon, 2008). Efforts to improve upon these dismal statistics have intensified in recent years in large part due to the escalation of successful liability suits and the effect the rising cost of workers compensation insurance has on a company’s ability to do business.
The health and safety in the workplace for workers has created a continual concern in the United States since the country was discovered. Although, a healthy and safe work environment can be described as a work area free of health risks and absent unsafe conditions. Indeed, the definition encompasses additional legal, moral, ethical issues. Particularly, reporting safety issues rather than choosing to ignore them, refusing to fall under peer pressure or fear of retaliation, not accepting bribes and making the conscious decision to report violators of the rules. Initially, certain accidents and injuries within industries were accepted and considered a consequence of the job, eventually workers became less accepting of inadequate working conditions began demanding safer work environments. Therefore, numerous labor unions and organizations formed throughout the history of the United States intended to resolve and mediate issues between employees and employers, including the health and safety of the workers in the workplace. Nevertheless, in an effort to avoid confusion on the accountability of employee health and safety in the workplace the author of this paper has examined the separate entities of OSHA, employers and employees. Although, a minute majority of workers believe that OSHA exclusively is responsible for ensuring the health and safety of workers in the workplace; the alternative belief is that it is the individual responsibility of
Understanding the importance of workplace safety prevention is critical in the study of occupational health and safety. Workplace violence is a term used to describe a situation in which an individual experiences verbal abuse, threatening behaviour, harassment, or physical assault in their place of employment or business-related functions or events (OSH Answers Fact Sheet). This is a common occurrence in many workplaces and has a significant impact on the employees ' mental state, interfering with their ability to work successfully (Barling). Through research on the OHSA, the Occupational Safety and Health Act and historical data, we are able to explore the implications of workplace safety on organizations and society.
On March 28, 1979, near Middletown, Pennsylvania, a Unit 2 (TMI-2) reactor partially melted down. The reactor released small amounts of radioactivity, but none of it had any detectable health effects on employees or workers at the plant. Then, from the years of 1980 to 1993, workers helped to clean up the accident. This accident created a need for better safety precautions and work operations. It changed emergency response planning, reactor operator training, human factors engineering, and radiation protection, which are only a few nuclear power plant operations that demanded to be fixed (“Backgrounder on the Three Mile Island accident”, 2014). As stated by Columbia Electronic Encyclopedia in the article “Three Mile Island” (2013), “The accident also increased public concern over the dangers of nuclear power and slowed construction of other reactors; no new reactors were approved for construction following the accident until 2012.” There were two nuclear reactors located at the plant, both owned by General Public Utilities, however only one of the two failed to work (Bowen, Robert M., 1983). This accident had a large impact on how stable mechanisms in nuclear situations need to be as well as how situations such as this one are handled.
