Students in college these days are keen to take part in sports. They are sometimes ready to miss their important lessons to perform sports activities held in school or outside school and they may get treated in illegal way. Specifically, according to NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association), which organizes the athletic programs of many colleges and universities in the U.S, the institution specified three groups of athlete students who received inappropriate academic assistance in math class by taking pictures of some tests in order to send it to expert to answer it (?Academic Fraud,? 2015). In fact, the importance of sports is directly related to the wellbeing of the student both physically and mentally. It could not be denied. Moreover, taking part in extracurricular activities with regard to sports can also impact the credentials of a student and further help him improving his profile (Lumpkin, A., & Stokowski, S., 2011). On the other hand, sports activities can affect the academics of students both positively and negatively. In conclusion, the benefits of sports cannot be denied. There is no doubt that interscholastic athletics in high schools are generally good for student’s mind and health. It is the mental and conceptual area that many use to support the importance of participation in competitive sports, something many can wholeheartedly agree with. It is also the same area that some point to when behavior exhibited by some athletes does not seem to support what is believed they should be learning. As with anything, however, one can only get out of something what one puts in. Athletics also provides social benefits and center on concepts such as cooperation, teamwork, and friendships. When participation in a sport in high school, it may interfere with class work, meaning an athlete may have to leave class early in order to participate in a game or tournament. With doing so, it is up to the student to get their work done. They have to make it up on their own time in order to make up what they missed in class. This teaches students time management and motivates students to try their best in order to make up work they missed. All coaches should take into consideration that if a student does not have the grades, then the athlete may not participate in competition or practice. Even this rule applies to the team’s best athlete, grade ineligibility applies to everyone. When it comes to high school, the sport itself generates motivation to keep the student on top of things and wanting to thrive for greatness in academics and athletics as well (“Merkel,”). Moreover, college athletes have shown a poor academic success rate in past few years, in brief. Their academic performances were significantly low due to the distraction caused by athletic programs. Athletics are not only a distraction for athletes, but also for institutions which are holding these athletic programs. “The low graduation rates among athletics, particularly in sports like football and basketball, are alarming, although there is strong evidence that this problem is endemic to the entire academic enterprise” (“College”). Average outcome GPA of an athlete is way lower than that of a normal student in general. Missing classes regularly, missing assignments, and missing exams have been the reasons for these poor academic performance rates. Daily practices and tournaments are the reason for them to miss their academics. Another side of this argument is that athletes are given unfair advantages in academics unlike other students. To many educational institutions, it is controversial whether or not sports are beneficial to scholastic success. Offering athletic programs is said to supply students with an enhanced learning experience, as well as adding amusement to a rather dull school year. Therefore, sports should be provided in all schools to reduce stress, improve academic performance, and develop teamwork skills and equal opportunity in school.

There is only a small percentage of student-athletes that will be graduating college. In addition to the graduating dilemma, only a small amount of athletes will be going to a professional level. A student-athlete barely have the most stressed life due to athletic and academic reasons. If these athletes were properly educated then these student-athletes would not lead their lives to crime and drugs. I am writing this essay because being a student-athlete myself, it is difficult to balance my school life and my athletic life. According to Amir lanis KHELIL, “Playing sports teaches life lessons like discipline, responsibility, self-confidence, accountability, and teamwork.” High school athletes who are challenged every day in the classroom often find that having a break from all the school gives them a mental refresher. Sports help students develop distinct qualities that a classroom could never teach. For example, sports help teach athletes how to work with one another rather than working alone. High school athletes who develop these features are more prepared to go out into the real world than are students who do not play sports. Building mental toughness, physical health, and discipline establishes the groundwork of becoming a successful high school athlete.
They do so, by helping students divert their attention onto something more enjoyable and physical. By limiting them, due to their grades, will only push and provoke students to stop trying. It is unfair to take make a student his or her physical activity or participation in clubs, because of their grades. Playing sports surprisingly enough, builds character. Sports have a positive impact on a student’s character and health. Sports help students’ foster skills such as teamwork, following guidelines, cooperation and even leadership. Sports and the general physical activities have been associated with a plethora of benefits. Not so much in correlation with education though. The debate on sports and academic performance relates as to whether sports affect academic performance positively or negatively. Mostly, academics, especially in high school and colleges, require an enormous time commitment. In the same way, sports demand time commitment. Apparently, academics and sports run linearly and either would consume the time of the other. Such would be the argument put forth by the claimants of the negative effects of sports on academic performance. The opponents to the positive correlation of sports and academic performance ground their arguments largely on the time commitment that the two require claiming that sports would consume a student’s time for study hence affecting their academic performance. Proponents of a positive correlation between sports and academic performance summon an extensive range of evidence showing that students who participate in sports perform well in academics. The proponents’ arguments are fetched from the proven benefits of exercise which improve a student’s overall well-being and motivate their academic performance. Opponents would, however, argue that the studies that find athletes and sports persons good at academics do not show how such correlations occur in that other factors could be the actual causes of the correlation and not sports in themselves. Regardless, opponents to the claim that sports affect academic performance positively cannot deny that sports affect the overall well being of any human being. As such, there is no denying that sports affect academic performance positively where a balance among the two is maintained.
