The Effect of Second Sino-Japanese War on Current China-Japan Relationships
Introduction Where was this difficult and twisted current relationship between Japan and China come from? In the news show, the Chinese president never smiled in the front of reporter in the official conference with a Japanese Ambassador is very common to see. I believe that the reason of this awkward and stiff relation with China and Japan date back to the era of Sino-Japanese War, which the war that Japanese invaded China. This war contributed and created the current Sino-Japanese Relationships. The purpose of this paper is to investigate how the incident happened during Sino-Japanese war affect the current political relationships between Japan and China and affect on the images of people in each country.
Background In this section, here provides the belief detail of Second Sino-Japanese War between China and Japan. The Second Sino- Japanese War happened during 1937 to 1945. It is Estimated more than 14 million people died during

After the war Japan and China signed the reconciliation in order to end the war and return peace and create new positive relationships. However, this reconciliation is not complete in the perspective that “the fact that the voices and human rights of individual victims have been largely missing”(Pu, 2010). The author of “The Nanking Massacre, Justice and Reconciliation: Chinese Persupective”, Pu claims that the “reconciliation measures that have been used in the Nanking case have been far from sufficient and successful, which is in contrast to the reconciliation process with respect to the Holocaust”(Pu, 2010). There is few truth seeking trials operated by the governments for the Beijing Massacre because the political and moral considerations of both government is preventing each other to seek the real truth of the incident (Pu,
The Second Sino-Japanese War began in 1937 and ended in 1945. Fighting between China and Japan began in 1931, after the successful Japanese invasion of Manchuria, in border skirmishes. Due to their small population compared to China, Japan sought to gain any advantage they could get. In 1932 the Japanese government began a large scale military research program to perform research kept secret due to its brutal nature. This program is referred to as the “Ishii Network” which is named after Shiro Ishii who was Chief Medical Officer of the Imperial Japaneses Army and was in charge of this undertaking. He set up several facilities of the Epidemic Prevention and Water Purification Department to be used to systematically conduct human experimentation on mainly Chinese civilians. The subjects of the experiments were prisoners that had no trial, were political prisoners, or were prisoners of war. These experiments were to see the effects of biological and chemical warfare as well as preforming medical research. After World War Two ended the Soviet Union put all researchers in the Ishii
During the early nineteenth century, both China and Japan enforced policies restricting foreign trade in order to avoid industrialization and western ideas, but after both societies experienced foreign invasions and unequal treaties being established by foreigners, Japan began to industrialize and became imperialists trying to create an empire, while China differed in that the people wanted reform and government restrained the reformation of their society, therefore causing multiple rebellions and overall the collapse of their empire.
China and Japan are too enormous and influential nations located in Eastern Asia. These two nations are almost always confused because of their similar culture and people, and they also happen to be right next to each other. Japan and China have never been allies and the two countries always seem to be in conflict. These two superpowers are very important to the world, and without them everything would be imbalanced in the global market. The rising superpower, China, is a nation that will continue to grow and improve their economy, while the fragile superpower, Japan, could fall apart at any moment and ruin the balance between all of the other countries.
In Peter Duus’ Japanese Discovery of America, the author shows the learning experience that Japan went through in order to become one of the strongest countries in the early 20th century. From 1797 when the first American ship arrived in Japan, to 1879 when President Grant visited the Meiji emperor, Japan, not one of the strongest countries economically and militarily at the time, had interactions with multiple countries that included Russia, England and Portugal. However, Japan’s Confucianism belief and the development of the Tokaido Road served as roots for their quick rise to modernization. Even though multiple countries were cooperating with Japan, the relations with the United States proved to be the most
Have you ever really gotten to know the details behind Japan and America´s relationship during World War 2? There’s too the relationship then you think. It was because of America’s economic power that Japan decided to bomb us. Really it’s all about the economics. World War 2 was one of the biggest conflicts between Japan and America.
…nevertheless the future outlook for further dangerous incidents was anything but serene. On the one hand, the ability of the Tokyo Government to control the action of the Japanese forces in China in jeopardizing American life, interests, and property is negative. On the other hand, I cannot conceive that with all our pacifist tendencies and longing for peace the patience of our people under cumulative insult is inexhaustible.6
Before America entered WWII, the U.S. and Japan were trading partners. However, Japan had been involved in the Pacific Theater of WWII, conquering land across Asia and the Pacific Ocean, before the U.S. joined the war. As a result, American resources had aided Japan in imperializing other nations. Critical of America’s relationship with Japan, Dr. Seuss released a political cartoon, shown above. In the cartoon, a man wearing a sweater labeled “Japan” shops at a store run by a bird, which dons a hat with a U.S. flag design. The Japanese man orders “kerosene, some excelsior and a blow torch”, claiming his mother wishes to “bake a cake” (Seuss, “Gimme some kerosene, some excelsior and a blow torch. Ma wants to bake a cake”). Using these details,
In Japan, most of the Chinese influence was brought to Japan through Korea. Japan consists of four mountainous islands off the coast of Korea, and its early development reflected that of the mainland. There were several waves of immigrants that came to Japan. In about 10,000 B.C.E., the Jōmon people practiced hunting and fishing and made clay pots. People who immigrated from northeast Asia brought agriculture and Yayoi culture with them. Yayoi communities were distinguished by complex social organization containing rulers, soldier, artisans, and priests. Objects made in China and Korea could be found in Japan, which shows that people were traveling back and forth from Japan. More waves of immigrants came from Korea during the fourth through
This confrontation between Japan and the United States impacted the battles to come in the Pacific. History has proven the island of Midway to be an important base for many operations during World War II. Had the United States lost this battle, the war may have reached a different outcome.
Before the attack, there were many injustice actions. The tension had already started way before this event. The dispute between two countries could be traced back all the way to 1915. When Japan issued the “Twenty-One Demands” on China, it “represented ultimatum to the Chinese government”. They were forced to give Japan a privileged status in some parts of China, also known as the “sphere of influence”. China was divided and conquered by Japan. This became a conflict with the “Open Door” stated policy between the United States and China, “in which all countries were to respect Chinese sovereignty and enjoy equal across to Chinese trade.” Later on, Japan was in an economic crisis and captured the rich province in China. This action was the
The views expressed by this book are ones that depicts the actions of the Japanese as acts to cover up the appalling incident. Iris Chang’s take on the Japanese leaves the impression that not only do the Japanese not take the proper steps in paying reparations but also that they refuse to acknowledge these events to the degree that they censor their own citizens from finding this information. (Iris Chang, Rape of Nanking, pg. 206.) Another important point of hers is the extent that the Japanese have succeeded. What is nearly as scary as these events is the fact that they can occur and it will take nearly a hundred year before the event is fully uncovered to most of the world. In classes all across America students learn about the Holocaust in several grades and they learn about it in great depths, but not until recently has the Rape of Nanking been even mentioned to students in American classrooms. Even when students learn about the Rape of Nanking not too much is discussed due to the ghastliness of this historical event. The majority of the time that the Rape of Nanking is mentioned it is almost in passing, just a point about how much history changes when you look something through a different lens. For the most part, one would believe that an event that includes two major countries in the global society, such as China and Japan, and

It saddened me that the people that experienced the awful tragedies during the Rape of Nanking thought that everyone was going to forget about what happened after the generation dies out. The awful thing about that thought is that it’s going to be true if schools don’t start teaching younger generations about the Rape of Nanking. “Chinese Americans are not just pained to recall the 350,000 inhabitants of Nanking who were murdered after Japan's army captured the city in 1937. They carry the additional burden of knowing that their most fellow citizens hardly suspect the first atrocities of World War 2 took place in what was then China’s capital.” (Grossman) It’s tough for the people of China to live with the fact that this mass murder and rape happened to their people and the fact that people deny the “Rape of Nanking” gives them more reasons to grieve. According to Grossman, rapes were on headlines, banners, and newspapers and
About five years before the tumultuous Boxer Rebellion, Japan had inflicted an exorbitant and hugely humiliating defeat on very big neighbour China in the 1894-95 Sino-Japanese War. In the 1895 Treaty of Shimonoseki, China had to make humongous reparations of 300 million ounces of silver to three times the government’s annual income, forfeited Korea, lost Taiwan and part of southern Manchuria to Japan,
Both Japan and China lie in the East of Asia. To a certain extent,Japan and China own similar culture background, in the Confucian Cultural Circle. But when we look back into the modern history development, Japan and China made quite different decisions when facing the western countries’ aggression. China suffered the invasion in 1840 after the first Sino-British War. Japan was in a similar situation in the black boat incident in 1853, the Opium War made the West began to pay attention to East Asia. From then on, Japan began to face the western culture. The reactions, as well as the result of Japan and China were quite disparate. This article wants to discuss what lead to the difference.
