Third parties fail to achieve electoral victories and representation in modern American politics have been because of the structure of the types of the elections, the ballot rules, and the debate rules. Even if the third parties have equal standards, views, resources, etc., lacking in popularity and significance within the government may increase the chance of not being able to represent in politics. “In order to appreciate the reasons for the Electoral College, it is essential to understand its historical context and the problem that the Founding Fathers were trying to solve.” (Kimberling) In the nation, the political parties brought up concerns and questioning of how electing a president with no such political parties would be possible …show more content…
He won 304 electoral votes, “with five Democratic and two Republican “faithless electors” voting for other people.” (DeSilver) It was brought to everyone’s attention because Trump won the larger states, Florida, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin, with very narrow margins, meaning that the electoral votes and popular votes were with third-parties and others not voting. In the article ‘Why Third-Party Candidates Can’t Win’ it was said that a third-party candidate could have been added because of how bad the scores between Trump and Clinton. In 2000, George W. Bush won the elections over Al Gore, handed by Ralph Nader and the famous support, was the last time a third-party candidate had an effect. Within the Electoral College system there have been several problems that have caused concern throughout the nation. Within the problems we have, if one were to lose the popular vote they could possibly win the electoral vote. Which shows that not much effort or as say information which creates a type of problem within the voting community. It also brings concern to the fact that the presidential campaign has the candidates trying to win either the big or small states and has less campaigning visits in those. With the third-party candidates, they may be able to show a bigger effort by going to the smaller states and showing their ideas, and showing the citizens that they want their support, which may show very little
To conclude, the Electoral College does not give power to the third-parties. Because the House and Senate pretty much revolve around the two-party system, the representation given to third-parties makes it nearly impossible to win the outcome of the election. In the case of a given third-party winning over a state, maybe the party would affect the outcome of the candidate’s runs. However, seeing it as it has been established over time, the winning of an election by a third-party is highly unlikely.
The political system many of us know today as the Electoral College is one that has been in place in our country for over 100 years. The Electoral College is a system that helps determine who is elected as President and Vice President during major elections. The Electoral College is the primary source of determining who is elected. This system although having withheld through the times and stayed in place is not effective to me, and can lead to unfair elections in the eyes of some American People.
When Americans vote for president, they are actually voting for presidential electors, who are known as a whole to be the electoral college. These electors, who are elected by citizens of the United States, are the ones that elect the chief executive. The electoral college has shaped the past, present, and future of the United States ever since it was constructed by the Constitutional Convention of 1787. The electoral college was created with fair and good intentions.
I agree with this statement because third parties are not very well known enough to get the presidential election and have never had a party member elected into the presidential office. Third party influence is not very high so even though the option is there, more people are likely to vote for the more well known Democratic and Republican than the third party, which means third party candidate votes
Although no third-party candidate has ever won a U.S. presidential election, I disagree that a third party candidate has only slightly affected the elections. Third-party candidates rarely win elections, but they can split parties. That can affect the outcome of an election when a third-party candidate is especially strong, or when the race between the two other candidates is especially close. Third-party candidates exert influence by focusing the election on particular issues and taking votes away from major candidates. During the 2000, election, Green Party presidential candidate Ralph Nader took votes away from Democrat Al Gore, thus contributing to the loss to George Bush. The most successful of the third parties in any one election was
In this country, we hold elections every four years to select the president. The founding fathers of our country established the electoral college to give the original thirteen states a fair voice in the election process. This country electoral called the electoral college into question on more the one occasion. In the most recent election, President-elect Donald Trump won the electoral vote over Hillary Clinton. Hillary Clinton won the popular vote. This election has sent the country into an uproar and citizens of the United States are now challenging the legitimacy of the electoral college process. This paper will examine whether this process is reliable and valid when choosing the leadership of this country.
the framers of the constitution debated many options for determining how the President of the
“It is a natural evolution of our mass consciousness to begin to see third parties as a viable option; it is reflected in the corrupt and broken two-party system.” Michelle Augello-Page, an author and writer, uses this quote to speak to the frustration Americans feel about the two-party political system. Since the 1850’s, the Democrats and Republicans have received the majority of the popular vote, while third party candidates struggle election after election (Schechter). The two major party candidates don’t always speak to the issues many Americans want to be addressed. Therefore, Americans must consider voting for third party candidates to ensure democracy works for everyone.
The Electoral College is a group of people who are “appointed by a larger group” of people to represent each state in the U.S. who then vote for the presidential elections (Dictionary.com 2015). The founding fathers created the Electoral College so that qualified citizens could vote for the president. They believed that the average American is uniformed, so they decided that a few educated people would make the correct choice for the entire population. The founding fathers also thought the Electoral College would be effective because at that time the only way of communication was through word of mouth and through letters. With the Electoral College, it was a more simple way to get the votes to one place and count them. A major criticism of the Electoral College is the popular candidate may lose to the electoral vote. This means that if majority of the population voted for candidate A, but majority of the electoral votes were for candidate B, the president of the nation would become candidate B. This situation has occurred four out of the fifty-six presidential elections that have been held in the United States. I believe that the Electoral College should be abolished so that the popular candidate would win the election, people would feel that they are making a difference in the society they live in, and we should replace the Electoral College with popular choice or allow our house of representatives to vote for the presidents instead.
In presidential elections, citizens do not actually vote for the candidate of their choosing, instead citizens are voting for electors known as the Electoral College. The Electoral College chooses a President, and Vice President. The Constitution gives each state a number of electors that equals the number of House of Representatives and Senate, which totals five hundred and thirty eight and also includes three electors for the District of Columbia. Each state receives a certain number of electors based on population size. The results in a state determine which electors are chosen. All electoral votes in a state go to the candidate that gets the most votes, and after state elections appointed officials certify the popular vote of each state. Two hundred and seventy votes are needed to elect a President; the candidate with the majority of the votes becomes the president.
However, according to the sensationalist propaganda that was mentioned earlier, there are three problems to the current Electoral College system. First, a president can be elected to office even if it is not what the people want. Second, electors are not punished for being unfaithful to what they have pledged. (At least not in 26 of the states) Finally the system for electing a president if no electoral majority is reached.
The Electoral College is a group with too much power, so much power that they cause the average citizen’s vote for president to fail to be significantly substantial, and that needs quite a few changes. The Electoral College believes that they can accurately reflect not only the nation’s desideratum, the group also believes they can reflect the nation’s absolute need. This is a democratic government and an American citizen deserves to have an irrefutable say in who he or she wants as a leader; the country might be a better place to live in if that were to happen; perhaps this generation might not experience it.
The Electoral College is the system the United States have used to elect the President for the past two hundred years. In this essay, the reader will see that although it did the best way to represent the will of the American people, and in this essay a better alternative will be proposed to the reader. The Electoral college was created in September sixth, nineteen-eighty-seven, and was described as (founder definition) and was meant to allow a stronger South, who by using the three-fifths compromise of 1787 to allow themselves more votes and ensure they are given the most federal power (Amar). This paper will show the reader that the Electoral College is flawed in the way that minority candidates can be elected, less populated states are overrepresented, and swing states are given the most attention.
Everyone knows that coming up soon this November is the election that will elect the President, Vice President, and other positions for the government. The process to getting elected can be difficult and confusing. People first need to get nominated, then they need to start their campaign with a platform, slogan etc., next they need to win people’s support and get them to vote and they also need to get the electoral college to vote for them. The electoral college is the group of people elected from each state that vote using the amount of votes that the state has (based on the population). Some people believe that the electoral college should not be used because it does not always vote for what the majority of the state is voting for, which
Today’s economy centers itself around the political parties today that are created with the intent of efficiently demonstrating the many shared opinions of thousands of individuals across the United States. Among them all, the two parties that attract the most attention are Democrats and Republicans who are often seen constantly creating tension among each other and campaigning/competing for political control in our country. But there are other parties such as third or minor parties whom are denied chances to express their views. These parties are considered minors in the increasingly competitive environment of the United States. From a public standpoint, minor/ third parties are considered less attractive because they are formed with the intent
