Enviroment What are we doing to our environment? This is a question many people have asked but never quite been able to answer in the fullest way. How do we find out the answer then you ask? By multiple sources. There’s the ‘scare’ tactic, saying what could happen in the future if we don’t change our ways. There’s the ‘inspirational’ tactic which spreads the word of all good that we can, should, or maybe even have done to our environment. And last but not least, the ‘fiction transformation’ tactic which turns something that we would read ourselves or maybe to our children to open up our eyes of what’s going on. Why is this important to even know? Many different ‘eco enthusiasts’ express their research on the environment, this general tactic is called ecocriticism. Ecocriticism is where authors analyze texts that embellish environmental concerns and study the various …show more content…
Seuss. In the book, The Lorax, he starts off with a question to intrigue interest, “What was the Lorax? And why was it there? And why was it lifted and taken somewhere from the far end of town where the Grickle-grass grows? The old Once-ler still lives here. Ask him. He knows.”(Seuss, 1971), you don’t think anything of this introduction where you will get a whole life lesson on your choices from this, but you do. Farther into the book, you start to see the effects of the factory, greed, and production of the ‘thneed’, ''I am the Lorax," he coughed and he whiffed. He sneezed and he snuffled. He snarggled. He sniffed. “Once-lerl" he cried with a cruffulous croak. "Once-lerl You're making such smogulous smoke! My poor Swomee-Swans ... why, they can't sing a note! No one can sing who has smog in his throat.” (Seuss, 1971). This bit of text shows the affect of ignorance. In our current day, we are the Once-ler. We are the people destroying our enviroment. Will it really go as far as it did in The Lorax? Or will we come to stop
The ecological environment is based on the relationship that the organisation has with ecology. Ecology represents other human beings, and the air, water and soil in the natural environment that support their well-being (Louw and Venter, 2013). Global warming is an issue facing organisations and the rest of the world and it is important for organisations to evaluate their contribution towards the problem. The potential impact regarding damage to the environment can cause severe customer and stakeholder backlash resulting in a reduction in the valuation of the firm. Our eco-friendly athletic shoe does not face such threats as it attempts to create a product which does not harm the atmosphere and will therefore receive
With these possibilities comes choices. No matter what the circumstance is, there is always a choice. The question then comes down to, will we make the right choice. When it comes to the environment, people seem to make choices that reap in our benefit. “To realize these aspirations, we must decide to live with a sense of universal responsibility, identifying ourselves with the whole Earth community as well as our local communities” (The Earth Charter, 2016). People don’t realize our actions effect more than just us as humans. There are several other mammals, amphibians, reptiles, etc. that live among us. Earth has a give and take relationship. If we give to the Earth it will take care of us and its inhabitants if we take care of it. However, if we take from Earth, and essentially destroy it, it will destroy us. According to the World Health Organization, “it has been estimated that more than 12.5 million people died due to their exposure to an unhealthy environment worldwide, accounting for 25% of the total global deaths in 2012.” This is much like the case studies found in Ecoliterate. There is one case in particular about a father who watches as his daughter crawls towards him on their front patio. A moment that is supposed to be filled with joy quickly turns to anger when he picks her up and notices she is covered in coal dust. This dust came from the coal mining that is happening just down the road. As the child grows older she is
Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing’s going to get any better. It’s not. (Dr. Seuss) According to Camilo Gomides, Ecocriticism is defined “the field of enquiry that analyzes and promotes works...which raise moral questions about huma n interactions with nature, while also motivating audiences to live within a limit that will be binding over generations.” I believe by the articles that I have read that people are hurting our environment, some people are positive towards our environment, and some just don’t pay attention to our environment .
This topic has been recognized in the news, documentaries, articles, and even advertisements. Many images of what the environment looked like about 10 years ago and what it looks like in present day. Most of these images bring to attention the amount
How do you feel about all the chemicals that are being released. How are you going to help the cause. Ecocriticism is the study of literature and the environment from from more than one point of view. It is important because you want multiple suggestion or answers instead of just your own so you can combine them and make it better.
In today’s society we face many major problems such as poverty, free trade complications, human rights issues, and environmental issues. However in the world many people deny that we face environmental problems, and state that it is not our main problem, when in fact it is a leading problem slowly destroying all life on this planet. Environmental issues are continuing to threaten our world, but many organizations such as EPA are working to solve many of the major environmental problems.
Human beings are dangerously harming the environment. The destruction of rain forests, overfishing, nuclear testing, soil erosion, fossil fuels, desertification, and landfills all have one thing in common, caused by humans. Numerous individuals are unaware these alone are destroying the environment. Individuals have learned in regards to our planet throughout the years, we know trees are a big necessity since they provide us with oxygen; the ocean’s ecosystem creates a food chain with supply and demand for both humans and aquatic life, and chemicals produced by human experimentation leads to pollution, which harms plants, animals, aquatic life and human lives. When it comes to the health of our planet, I firmly believe humans are the reason
Our increased consumption of goods is severely damaging our planet’s environment in ways that may tamper its usefulness and comfort for the future. When goods and products are created, several of Earth’s limited resources are spent. Trees are cut to create paper, mountains are blown up and metals are mined from the Earth to create products such as computers that need these metals, clean water is used up to create drinks such as water bottles, and as a result, resources are constantly taken out of the Earth. These resources are limited because we are consuming them much faster than they can be restored. (Story of Stuff Video). Additionally, the process of creating goods requires energy which most businesses and countries use fossil fuels to generate. There are many methods of extracting oil form the Earth, and all of these methods release a large amount of greenhouse gases into our atmosphere. The use of fossil fuels to
Global warming has been a universal issue for many decades. It started back at the beginning of the Industrial Revolution, when people unknowingly released fumes from factories into the air. Although global warming has been an all-around topic, it has recently started to gain media attention due to the many catastrophic events that have occurred around the globe. Global warming can be defined as, “a gradual increase in the overall temperature of the earth 's atmosphere generally attributed to the greenhouse effect caused by increased levels of carbon dioxide, chlorofluorocarbons, and other pollutants.” Humans burning fossil fuels discharge greenhouse gases. Not only are we gravely endangering the earth for ourselves, but we are also causing the environment to become an unsuitable habitat for all the wildlife that has already inhabited the earth for many, many years. As we continue to destroy the earth, the consequences will increase in a grave manner. I will make the argument as to why we should become more eco friendly in order to save the earth’s natural state of being.
Many individuals do not think twice when doing something harmful to the Earth. Such people are unaware of how much these little actions can build up to damage our planet. If we,as humans, do not change our habits, the damage done to the Earth will not be fixable. These harmful actions, while completely preventable, are destroying the Earth’s wildlife and atmosphere.
The environment is a controversial topic in the world today. Some people worship nature and take extreme measures to care for it. Others do not care for the environment and do not do anything to preserve it. Many, however, are indifferent to the environment. They care but do not do anything to care for it. With many views and concerns for the environment, how should Christians take action? Since the environment is God’s creation, Christians should take individual responsibility to reduce trash, conserve energy, and recycle resources but not be anxious about saving the earth.
The earth is home to millions of species and each one has an impact on the earth's environment whether big or small. In comparison to the earth, humans have only been around for a fraction of time, but have successfully made the largest impact of any species. Although humans have shaped the world through innovations and technologies, we are making a significant, negative impact on the earth and its environment. This paper will outline several ways in which the human’s actions are negatively impacting the earth’s environment and its inhabitants.
Humans used to have a good relationship with Mother Earth, but with civilization came a breaking point. As we started building cities and industries, the misuse of natural resources changed the environment. We continue to tear up the planet scavenging for coal and oil that results in our wildlife and forests diminishing. Human anthropogenic activities are changing the natural greenhouse gases. Things like burning of fossil fuels has significantly increased the concentration of atmospheric carbon dioxide. In the article Change We Must Believe In Kurt Cuffey, a professor of the department of Earth and Planetary sciences at the University of California, Berkeley, brings attention to future problems Earth
Humans need to change their way of living. We are destroying our Earth at such a fast rate and we do not get another chance once it is gone. Everyone believes that someone else is going to save them, when in reality the only person you can count on is yourself. Most people do not realize the urgency of this problem. To this day, some people do not believe that global warming is happening even though the glaciers are melting, average temperatures are rising, etc. Naomi Klein says in her book, This Changes Everything, “We deny because we fear that letting in the full reality of this crisis will change everything. And we are right” (Klein 3). As a world, we take complete advantage of our Earth. The first step in saving our world is to realize the problem then by using land ethic and aesthetic reasoning we can change the way humans think about our Earth before it is too late.
What will our Earth look like if we, as human beings living on this single planet, continue to carelessly live our lives, destroying and setting the environment up for near failure? (Rhetorical Question). The major issue of pollution and other disastrous environmental effects caused by industrialization is one that is very significant, for this is what will determine what our planet will look like in the following decades and centuries. As the millennial generation, it must be known that our generation will be the one to shape the earth in the near future, and therefore we all should be driven to substantial change for the environment, and consequently our planet. In today’s age, because we have an advancement in sources and technology, every single individual here has the ability to make a significant change that will contribute to the global and collective growth of our future planet and society. We believe that we must take action against pollution, and for environmentalism, through sustainability, reducing carbon emissions, and conserving energy.
