The Experience Of Writing : My Experience In Writing

I have felt like this many times in the past, so I can completely understand the way a lot of people feel about writing. I have noticed that it has always taken a great teacher to help me get past these points. Those teachers take the time to empower me and truly help me improve my writing. It takes more than just some markings on a paper for someone to improve their writing. I have noticed that if I am able to have a conversation about my writing with a teacher, they can better understand what I am trying to convey, and therefore can show me a better way to express my ideas through my writing. These connections I have had with some of my teachers have really empowered me and my writing greatly.

During my past writing experience, I have struggled with formulating and initiating interesting points of discussion, grammar, and transitions. I have often sat down to work on a paper and found myself completely drawing a blank on anything interesting to write about. Whether I am given a specific prompt or general topic to discuss, I constantly struggle with finding a starting point. Once I do, I become too focused on trying to create a poetic sounding paper, rather than focusing on the main discussion points. In some ways, focusing on making my papers poetic have added detail and depth to my writing. However, this frequently distracts me from my papers main theme. One of my biggest drawbacks with writing has always been proper grammar usage.

There are many experiences that have shaped the way I write today. For example, during my senior year at Plainfield Central High School, I struggled with finding a way to put my paper together using ideas and words of my own. My senior English teacher always said, “Writing a paper is not always just citing what you found on a website. You need to add your own thoughts and comments to make your paper more personal.” She sat down with me after class and worked on my paper with me to try and teach me a way to find my own words and it worked. She had me write the paper before finding any type of citations on the internet. That way, it was all my own words and then I could find my sources and add them in there and delete anything of my own if needed. Another example is, when I was sitting at my kitchen table struggling to find the words to make the paper have good detail. My mother looked at me and said, “Write how you want it to be written. Write it in the way you believe will make a good paper.” That has helped me tremendously because when I write how I want to write, I generally like how my papers turn out so much more. Another thing that has helped me was, about one time every week I would sit down and write about anything I can think of. It could be what I am looking forward to doing in the future or even just what is on my mind at that moment. I realized that the more I write, the better I get at it.

My writing experience is different from most of the students in American college because I am an international student. I did not take any formal English writing training until I have to take SAT test. Before my preparation for SAT, I was taught the Chinese classic poems and argumentative writing. The Chinese writing and English writing are two different systems. I tried to use Chinese writing style to write a story, an short experiment about my own life in a TOFEL exam before, and I failed. In order to gain a better mastery of the English writing skills, I took two ESL course. They improved me a lot on my formal writing and presentation skills. I learnt how to find source from library and Internet and to cite the source in a formal way. The

Throughout my experiences as a writer, I would say the issue I have faced the most is being well-organized. While writing essays I can begin to write on a topic but it gets difficult for me as I start to discuss or argue on my topic which can cause confusion to readers as they read my writings. It is a setback that I have adapted into my style of writing and has needed improvement in order to have a strong structured foundation academically. Over the past years as I encountered different perspectives from teachers that have led me to incorporate their style of writing that I have adjust to my own. The inevitable had happened; I, as a small child, was demanded to read. A little antisocial human being launched into a world of, at first, difficult words and lengthy phrases. While words and literacy were forced into my mind, I had reluctantly begun the adventure to enjoy and accept the art of literature. Later however, my hopes and dreams were crushed to pieces by a gruesome teacher with an interesting form of a so called “grading policy.”

I became the literate person I am today by mostly writing, I write all the time and I do a little reading. What made me love writing was the fact I found an escape, not on an emotional level, but writing is something to help ease in my opinion. My personal writing has influenced me more than the writing I was assigned in school, I continued it outside of school as a choice of my own, once I started I never stopped. My viewpoint on reading is different than my viewpoint on writing, reading is not that bad but it can get boring. What made me feel different about reading from writing, is probably the fact, reading just takes time, like when I write, I write any and everytthing however I want. As a writer, I find myself getting lost. Typically, when I go to start writing I hit a brick wall. It’s as if all my thoughts suddenly escape my mind and I draw a blank. It takes me forever to conjure up some form of a thesis and then takes even longer to figure out what I should write to support it in a way that makes sense. Then, attempting to find a way to organize my ideas and put them together in cohesive paragraphs seems like an impossible task in the moment. It is not uncommon for me to get flustered and just throw something down on the paper because I get anxious seeing how much work is left to do. Throughout my life, the English language has acted as something much more than a communicative tool. Because I emigrated from Germany to the US when I was almost five years old, my adoption and ongoing usage of the English tongue has connoted a change of cultural, and even personal, identity in my life. I did not know one word of English when I arrived in the US in 2004, and so, as I learned English, thus I became familiar with the new life I would live on the other side of the Atlantic. I quickly became fluent in English and entered public school after one year of preschool. I remember that, for the first hundred days of kindergarten, I did not utter one word. Can you consider myself to be a terrible writer? Most writers get inspiration from experiences, circumstance, or imaginations make a contribution in authors storyline. Each writers have their own style of writing since they all different messages, languages, and tone for the reader to actual take a position in the narrator’s writing. In a past even, when my grandfather is no longer with me, he has made a huge contribution in academic life.

Writing allows me to express my views as a student. I have always enjoyed writing well as speaking. By writing first, then preparing and reciting notes, I am able to push through the nervous jitters when I have to speak at work. Writing first, then speaking will help you get a clear message across (Young, 2006). For me, being able to write has been healing. As I am sure most families experience issues of some kind, my family had many issues while I was a child. So, writing was and still is a tool for me to get things out and off of mind. A few friends of mine say they do not like to write and would not do it unless they had to. I encourage them to find something they want to learn about, then read about it and the writing will come. We can become passionate in writing about what we are interested in learning about (Quinn, 2015). Well, I do have to write for this class and for school in general. But, I choose to view it as an extension of what I already like to do, which is express my thoughts and understandings about what I read or study. The only difference with school is that someone is telling me what I have to read or study. This can make the learning less passionate, but if I can find one little thing that I can grab on to, it seems to provide me with a purpose to write.

Writing has continuously served as a getaway in my life. It has kept me from bottling up my thoughts and emotions and has allowed me to express all of these things on paper. Communicating through speaking has always been a weakness of mine. It is for this reason that I often turn to writing to convey my feelings. Though have such an immense passion for free-writing, I have found myself struggling when comes to writing academic papers. Generally, I enjoy writing when it is something that I am interested in. In Composition I and II, I often have had the opportunity to choose the topic that I write my paper on. I am confident that this has been a major turning point for me within my academic essays. Throughout this semester, I have personally developed and improved as a writer, through the weekly writing tasks set for the writers Journal. This procedure of composing Journal entries and assessment tasks involves critical reflection on the information provided and on myself developing those skills. During my school years, books were always as a part of my life, reading gave me joy, swept me towards my memories and took me along Journies never been before. All throughout my years of schooling, I’ve had just about, one paper that was about one page long, due every year. My papers never had to be more than one page in length. Therefore, I did not have to do much writing or do many essays. Surely not enough to remember any of the assignments. Writing has never been something I enjoyed doing, so I never bothered to many any memories of my writing experiences. I did not think it was necessary to remember any of them since I only had to do them to get a grade. The only writing experience I remember was the first assignment I had in this English 100 class about a writing experience. All week long, I sat there thinking about what to write about, but nothing came to mind as a topic. Then, one thing came to mind, but it was so very vague, I could not write the length that was needed for the assignment. I could only think of a few sentences to write for it. After sitting for a few moments longer, I thought, how about I write about how difficult it was for me to write this essay before it was due.
